To unlock a Verizon Samsung phone, first check when it was activated and whether it is on standard monthly service or prepaid: the rules differ, and Verizon changed its policy for devices activated from January 27, 2026. For newer standard-monthly devices bought directly from Verizon, full retail payment or paying off the financing balance triggers automatic unlocking, subject to verification and lost, stolen, or fraud restrictions. Older eligible devices may follow the former 60-day rule. Unlocking removes Verizon’s carrier restriction; it does not guarantee that another carrier supports your exact Galaxy model.
How do I unlock my Verizon Samsung phone?
Verizon’s policy depends on the phone’s seller, service type, and purchase or activation date. Start by identifying those details and whether the phone is fully paid off. Samsung does not set carrier unlock requirements; it advises customers to contact the carrier before deactivating service or moving to a new carrier. See Samsung’s guidance on moving a Galaxy phone to a different carrier.

| Device and service | Verizon’s stated unlock path |
|---|---|
| Verizon-purchased, standard monthly service; activated before January 27, 2026 | Verizon’s current FAQ says the former policy applies: the device unlocked automatically after 60 days. This legacy rule is not the rule for every current device. Verizon Device Locking FAQs |
| Verizon-purchased, standard monthly service under the updated policy | Verizon says the device unlocks automatically when purchased at full retail price or when its financing balance is paid in full. A secure payment method is required for immediate unlocking after payoff. Verizon’s updated Device Unlocking Policies |
| Verizon-purchased prepaid device under the updated policy | Verizon’s policy says 365 days of paid and active service; its FAQ describes requesting an unlock after 365 days from purchase and 12 months of paid service. Suspended days do not count. If the dates do not align, confirm eligibility with Verizon for the specific account and device. Policy; FAQ |
Verizon’s updated policy is effective February 18, 2026, and its FAQ identifies January 27, 2026 as the transition date for the new rules. Use the activation date and service type to identify the applicable path rather than assuming every Verizon phone follows the same waiting period. The detailed policy is at Verizon’s Device Unlocking Policies—Update.
If you paid off a standard-monthly device and it is still locked
Verizon says a secure payment method is needed for immediate unlocking after full payoff. If you used a Verizon Gift Card, Verizon says unlocking may be delayed 35 days while it verifies the funds. Check the account and payment details with Verizon if the phone remains locked after the stated conditions are met.

Exceptions and other account types
- Verizon says it will not unlock a device reported lost or stolen until it is cleared; its FAQ also excludes devices flagged for fraud. Paying off the balance does not remove these restrictions.
- Verizon describes separate business-account terms: full retail payment or payoff can trigger automatic unlocking, and the policy also identifies the end of the line term or payment of a termination fee, subject to the agreement.
- For deployed military customers, Verizon describes an accommodation after verification and 60 days active in good standing following suspension. This is not the standard consumer path.
For business, prepaid, retailer-purchased, or otherwise unusual cases, check Verizon’s current policy and confirm the specific device and account with Verizon.
What unlocking does—and does not—change
Verizon defines unlocking as disabling the software restriction that prevents a device designed for one carrier from being activated on another. An unlocked phone is not automatically compatible with every carrier: Verizon warns that differences in network technology can limit functionality or prevent the device from working. Ask the destination carrier to check the exact Galaxy model and IMEI, supported network bands, and features before switching.

Samsung notes that branding, network configuration, carrier features, and system apps can change when a new carrier SIM or eSIM is inserted. A carrier must also support the phone’s particular eSIM capability; neither an unlocked status nor a new SIM guarantees that every Galaxy model will work on every network. See Samsung’s overview of Galaxy SIM cards.
Why does my Samsung phone say “SIM Not Supported”?
That message can indicate a carrier lock, but message wording varies by manufacturer. Verizon lists “SIM Not Supported” as a lock indicator in its Device Locking FAQs. First verify the phone’s eligibility under the policy above. If the carrier restriction has been removed, troubleshoot SIM recognition or network activation separately; those steps cannot unlock a phone that remains carrier-locked.

SIM or eSIM troubleshooting after eligibility
If the phone should be eligible but still will not connect, determine whether it recognizes the SIM or eSIM. Samsung’s troubleshooting article recommends checking SIM status, confirming with the carrier that SIM protection is not enabled, resetting mobile network settings, restarting the phone, and running diagnostics in Samsung Members. Menu names can vary by Galaxy model and software version.
- On the Galaxy, open Settings > About phone > Status information > SIM card status. Check whether a carrier appears under Network.
- Ask the carrier whether SIM protection is enabled and confirm that the SIM or eSIM is active for this device.
- Reset mobile network settings, then restart the phone. Check Samsung’s SIM card troubleshooting instructions for model- and software-specific steps.
- Run SIM diagnostics in the Samsung Members app if available.
- For eSIM setup, follow the carrier’s activation instructions and confirm that it supports eSIM on the exact phone model. Samsung’s SIM card guide covers Galaxy SIM and eSIM considerations.
If the phone still displays a lock message after Verizon’s eligibility conditions are met, contact Verizon to check the device’s lock status. If it recognizes the carrier but has no service, ask the destination carrier to verify activation and compatibility instead.
