You can remove a rule only if your account has permission to change it; sheet protection is an editing restriction, not a password or security lock.
Remove a protected sheet or range
- Open the spreadsheet in Google Sheets on a computer.
- Choose Data > Protect sheets and ranges.
- In the side panel, click Cancel to show the existing protection rules.
- Select the protected sheet or range you want to change.
- Click the delete control for that protection.
These are Google’s documented steps for removing a protection rule. Google’s instructions for protecting, hiding, and editing sheets also explain how protection permissions work.

What to do if you cannot delete the rule
Protection permissions are separate from general file-sharing access. Spreadsheet owners control who can change protected sheets and ranges. Editors may manage protections, but cannot take permissions away from owners; viewers and commenters cannot make changes. If the delete control is unavailable or Google denies the change, ask the spreadsheet owner or an administrator to remove the rule or adjust your access.
If you only need to edit certain cells, the owner may be able to add you as an allowed editor for that range while keeping the rest of the sheet protected. That changes who can edit under the rule; it does not delete the rule. Changing the spreadsheet’s general sharing access is a separate task.

Protection is not a password or security measure
Google states, “This shouldn’t be used as a security measure.” Protected sheets and ranges restrict editing, but they are not encrypted or password-protected. Google’s help explains that people may still print, copy, paste, or import and export copies of a protected spreadsheet. Do not use sheet protection to keep confidential information from people who can access the file. See Google’s explanation of protection limits.
Make a separate editable copy
If you cannot change the original rule but are eligible to copy the spreadsheet, make a copy and edit that separate file. The copy does not remove protection from or change the shared original. Google’s help says a user with view access may also be able to make a copy. Google’s help page describes the copy option.

Remove protection with Apps Script
For authorized automation, Google Apps Script’s Protection class provides remove() to remove protection from a range or sheet. The method still depends on the user having edit permission; it is not a way around file permissions. Script authorization and access to the spreadsheet also apply. See the current Apps Script Protection reference.
