If only the F1–F12 row behaves differently, try Fn + Esc to toggle Function Lock on supported models. If ordinary keys have stopped typing, use the troubleshooting steps below; Function Lock will not fix that symptom.
First, identify what stopped working

Function Lock changes how the function row works; Num Lock affects numeric-key behavior. Neither is evidence of a universal keyboard lock. For model-specific key locations and combinations, consult the laptop’s user guide or service manual.

Try the relevant key toggle
Function-row keys: Fn + Esc
Dell’s Keyboard Troubleshooting and Usage: The Definitive Guide describes Fn + Esc as the Function Lock toggle on supported Dell laptops and keyboards. It changes whether the function keys perform their standard F-key actions or the associated special actions by default. Dell explains: “Pressing the function key activates the special key that is associated with that function key without having to press the Fn key first.” Press Fn + Esc again to return to the previous mode. This toggle is for the function row, not ordinary typing.

Num Lock can switch a separate numeric keypad on or off, or change what embedded keys on some models enter. The key position and shortcut vary. For example, Dell’s Latitude 7280/7390/7290 documentation describes Fn + F5 for embedded numeric keys when that feature is enabled in BIOS. That example does not apply to every Dell laptop; check your exact model’s documentation rather than trying unrelated combinations or changing BIOS settings blindly.

If ordinary typing has stopped, troubleshoot in order
- Save your work and restart. Disconnect unneeded external devices and docking hardware, then restart and test the built-in keyboard again. This helps rule out a temporary problem or an attached device interfering with input.
- Inspect the keyboard. Turn off the laptop before cleaning. Look for debris around keys and for keys that are stuck, loose, or visibly damaged. Dell recommends gently using compressed air around an obstructed key. Cleaning may help with physical obstruction; it will not resolve a software problem or a failed keyboard.
- Compare with an external keyboard. Connect a USB keyboard and try typing. If it works while the built-in keyboard does not, that narrows the issue to the built-in keyboard path, but it does not prove which component has failed. You can use the external keyboard as temporary input while continuing diagnosis.
- Run Dell’s keyboard diagnostic. Dell recommends testing with SupportAssist. If the test reports an error, record the error and validation code for Dell support. Dell’s troubleshooting guidance says that if the diagnostic detects the keyboard, Windows or installed software may be preventing it from working; the result is useful diagnostic evidence, not proof of one exact cause.
- Check Dell’s current troubleshooting guidance for your model. Dell’s laptop keyboard troubleshooting page also covers driver and BIOS updates. Follow its instructions for your Windows version and model; an update is not automatically required, and software changes cannot repair physical damage.
Use temporary input if the built-in keyboard is unusable
Windows On-Screen Keyboard or an external keyboard can let you keep working while you troubleshoot. To open On-Screen Keyboard, press Windows key + Ctrl + O if those keys are available, or search Windows for OSK. Dell also documents these options in its keyboard troubleshooting guide.
When to contact Dell
Contact Dell support if the keyboard still fails after these checks, SupportAssist reports an error, or you find visible damage. Provide the diagnostic error and validation code when available. Repair options depend on the laptop model, diagnosis, and warranty; use Dell’s model-specific support rather than assuming an individual key can be replaced as a universal fix.
