DDR4 vs. DDR5: Which Memory Should You Buy?

DDR4 or DDR5? Your motherboard and CPU decide compatibility. Compare capacity, supported speeds, timings and total platform cost before choosing a kit.

Buy the memory generation your motherboard and processor support. DDR4 and DDR5 are physically and electrically incompatible, so you cannot put a DDR4 kit in a DDR5 motherboard or switch generations by replacing RAM alone. Once compatibility is settled, choose enough capacity for your workload, then compare supported transfer rates, timings and the cost of the whole platform.

DDR4 vs. DDR5 at a glance

What matters DDR4 DDR5
Compatibility Works only with a motherboard designed for DDR4 and a compatible processor. Works only with a motherboard designed for DDR5 and a compatible processor.
Bandwidth and capacity Lower bandwidth and density potential than DDR5. Higher bandwidth and greater density potential; this can enable higher-capacity modules and configurations with fewer modules.
Performance impact Can be a sensible choice for an existing compatible PC or a lower-cost platform. Can help in memory-sensitive workloads, but the size of any gain depends on the CPU, workload, graphics card and software.
Best buying approach Check the exact board and CPU, then select a matched, supported kit. Check the exact board and CPU, then select a matched, supported kit.

There is no universally faster choice for every computer: platform compatibility determines what you can install, and workload determines whether DDR5’s extra bandwidth makes a noticeable difference.

Can you use DDR4 in a DDR5 motherboard?

No. The modules are physically and electrically different. A DDR4 kit cannot be installed in a DDR5 motherboard, and a DDR5 kit cannot be installed in a DDR4 motherboard. A platform that offers both memory generations does so through separate motherboard variants, not a board that accepts either kind of RAM. Check the exact motherboard model and processor specifications before ordering.

For example, AMD’s AM5 socket launched with Ryzen 7000 and supports DDR5, according to AMD’s Ryzen 7000 announcement. Intel’s 12th-generation Core processors and 600-series chipset era included both DDR4 and DDR5 motherboard options; the memory type depends on the particular board. Intel’s 12th-generation memory installation guidance covers those configurations. These examples are not a substitute for checking a different generation or a specific board’s manual.

  • Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
  • G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
  • Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming

  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

Is DDR5 worth it for performance?

DDR5 offers higher bandwidth, but bandwidth alone does not predict how much faster a PC will feel. The processor, graphics card, game or application, and memory timings all affect results. A workload limited by memory bandwidth may benefit more than everyday browsing or office tasks; a workload bottlenecked elsewhere may show little difference.

What a recent gaming test found

In a July 2026 Tom’s Hardware test of 15 games at 1080p with an RTX 5090 and high/ultra settings on Intel LGA 1700 systems, DDR4 averaged about 9–14% lower performance than DDR5 across the tested processors. Individual games differed. Treat this as a result for that test setup, not as a guaranteed DDR4 penalty on another platform, resolution, graphics card or workload. See the Tom’s Hardware comparison and test conditions.

Bandwidth is not the same as latency

Transfer rate, commonly shown in MT/s, relates to bandwidth; timings describe latency. In a controlled Tom’s Hardware test published in 2025, DDR5-4800 delivered 46% more measured bandwidth than DDR4-3200 in that test configuration, while DDR4 latency could be lower with the particular kits and timings used. Those figures illustrate why comparing a kit by transfer rate alone can mislead; they are not a universal product ranking. Read the test’s configuration and results.

AMD reported up to 11% faster gaming in F1 2022 with an EXPO profile in its own Ryzen 7000 launch testing. That is a vendor-reported result for one named game and setup, not an independent general comparison of DDR5 against DDR4. AMD’s announcement describes the EXPO result.

How much RAM should you buy?

Choose capacity for the work you actually do before paying extra for a faster kit. DDR5’s higher-density chips can support higher-capacity modules and some configurations with fewer modules, but that does not mean every user needs more memory or that capacity alone makes an application faster. Check the motherboard’s maximum supported capacity and module arrangement.

  • For gaming, consider the requirements of the games and other applications you keep open.
  • For large creator workloads, virtual machines or other memory-heavy work, size capacity around the actual projects and software you run.
  • For browsing and office use, avoid spending on capacity or speed that your workload will not use.

How to choose a compatible kit

  1. Identify the exact motherboard model. Check its manual or product specifications for DDR4 or DDR5 support. Do not rely on chipset or processor family alone.
  2. Confirm processor support. Verify the CPU and board combination, including supported memory configurations, with the motherboard manufacturer’s documentation.
  3. Choose capacity and module count. Compare the total capacity and arrangement with the board’s specifications and the memory support list.
  4. Compare supported speed and timings. Look at the kit’s transfer rate and timings together, and confirm whether the board and CPU support its rated profile. A kit’s advertised speed is not guaranteed on every system.
  5. Prefer a matched kit. Avoid casually combining separate kits or modules with different speeds or part numbers. Intel says mixed supported DIMM speeds can make a board use the lowest supported frequency; its 12th-generation guidance also warns that mixed part numbers can reduce target speed or prevent booting in the configurations it describes. Consult the exact board manual and QVL (qualified vendor list). See Intel’s guidance on memory-frequency downgrades.

A 32GB DDR5 kit made of two 16GB modules is one common kit format, not a recommendation for every PC. For instance, Tom’s Hardware used a G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB DDR5-6000 C36 32GB (2×16GB) kit in its comparison test; that example does not establish compatibility with every DDR5 board.

Should you keep DDR4 or build with DDR5?

If you already own a working DDR4 PC

Keeping a compatible board and memory kit can be the practical choice. Moving to DDR5 is not a RAM-only upgrade: you need a DDR5 motherboard and a compatible processor, so compare the total platform cost with the benefit you expect for your applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are choosing parts for a new build

Start with the processor and motherboard options that suit your needs, then account for their supported memory generation and the price of the full CPU, board and RAM combination. DDR5’s bandwidth and density potential are real, but neither guarantees a particular gaming uplift or faster everyday response. Current prices vary by region and time, so compare live local costs rather than assuming one generation is always cheaper.

If you are replacing or adding memory

Match the generation, capacity plan and supported configuration. A matched kit is the safer choice than combining old and new modules; mixing speeds or part numbers may lower the operating speed or cause boot problems in some configurations. Check the board’s QVL and manual before purchase.
