What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For most new general-purpose PCs and laptops, 16 GB of RAM is a flexible target if your budget allows. Choose 8 GB for basic browsing, documents and video; consider 16 GB or more for editing, gaming, streaming or other demanding work. These are workload-based recommendations, not guarantees of performance. Windows 11’s 4 GB minimum is an installation floor, not a smooth-use target, and Copilot+ PCs have a separate 16 GB minimum.
Choose capacity by what you do at the same time
RAM helps a computer keep active apps and tasks readily available. The more demanding programs and browser tabs you use together, the more memory you may need. Microsoft’s recommendations distinguish basic use from multitasking and creative work; they do not establish a single capacity that guarantees a particular experience.

| Use | Practical starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Browsing, documents and online video | 8 GB is a reasonable basic-use starting point. Microsoft says these activities can be done with at least 4 GB, but recommends 8 GB for longer-term use. | Many open tabs or demanding apps running alongside your browser can increase your needs. |
| Everyday computing and multitasking | Target 16 GB for a new general-purpose machine if your budget permits. Microsoft’s buying guide recommends 8–16 GB for multitaskers. | Think about how many apps you typically keep open and whether you expect heavier use over the computer’s lifetime. |
| Photo/video editing or high-performance projects | Start at 16 GB or more. | Check the current requirements of your editing application and the scale of your projects; there is no universal higher threshold established by these general recommendations. |
| Gaming or streaming | Closer to 16 GB may be appropriate; Microsoft lists entertainment configurations in an 8–16 GB+ range. | Check each game’s current requirements and account for streaming software, browser tabs and other apps running at the same time. |
| Copilot+ PC | At least 16 GB. | This is a requirement for the Copilot+ PC category, not the general Windows 11 minimum. |
Microsoft’s All about computer memory explains its workload guidance, and its PC and Laptop Buying Guide gives capacity ranges for buyer profiles. The 16 GB general-purpose target above is a practical reading of that guidance, not an official universal minimum.
Do not confuse Windows’ minimum with a useful target
Microsoft lists 4 GB of RAM as the minimum for Windows 11. That figure describes a system requirement; it does not promise comfortable multitasking or establish the amount a buyer should choose for a new computer. Microsoft separately recommends 8 GB for longer-term use in its memory guidance. See Windows 11 System Requirements for the operating-system minimum.

Check whether the memory can be upgraded
Do not assume a computer with less RAM can be upgraded later. Some PCs may offer upgrade options, but whether a specific laptop or desktop can accept more memory depends on the exact model. Before buying, check the manufacturer’s specifications and maintenance information, or ask the manufacturer or retailer. For a laptop, verify upgradeability and the supported memory type; capacity alone does not tell you whether a module can be added.
If you are comparing desktop memory kits, confirm motherboard and processor support, memory generation, form factor and the capacity you intend to install. Microsoft’s guidance supports checking the exact machine with its manufacturer or retailer; it does not validate compatibility for any specific kit.

A quick decision process
- List your usual tasks, including apps you run simultaneously—not just the single most demanding app.
- Use 8 GB as a basic-use starting point, 16 GB as a flexible target for a new general-purpose computer, and 16 GB or more as a starting point for editing or high-performance projects.
- If you are choosing a Copilot+ PC, make sure it meets that category’s 16 GB minimum.
- Check the exact computer’s specifications and upgrade information before treating a smaller configuration as expandable.
- For a particular game or creative application, consult its publisher’s current requirements; general RAM guidance cannot replace software-specific requirements.
