How to Check Which RAM Type and Capacity Your Computer Supports

To find out which RAM your computer supports, identify its exact model—or its motherboard model for a custom-built PC—and check the manufacturer’s specifications or manual. Confirm the memory generation, module form factor, maximum total and per-slot capacity, slot count, and any configuration limits. Installed RAM and a compatibility scanner can help, but neither alone proves the system’s maximum supported configuration.

What to check before choosing RAM

Use the full computer model or motherboard model, not just a product family name. Different configurations within one laptop or desktop series can have different memory limits, slots, or soldered memory. For a motherboard, check the exact model and revision if its manufacturer lists revision-specific documentation.

  • Memory generation: Match the supported DDR generation. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable; a system designed for DDR4 cannot use DDR5.
  • Form factor: Check whether the system uses DIMMs, SO-DIMMs, or another specified module type. Desktop PCs commonly use DIMMs and laptops commonly use SO-DIMMs, but exceptions include small desktops and devices with soldered memory.
  • Capacity and layout: Look up maximum total memory, maximum capacity per slot, supported module sizes, number of usable slots, and whether any memory is soldered or shared.
  • Speed and configuration: Check supported memory speeds, module count and placement, pairing or channel requirements, and any ECC, registered-memory, rank, or density restrictions that apply to the platform.
  • Firmware: Check the system or motherboard support page for relevant BIOS notes. Some memory designs may require an update, but an update is not universally necessary.

Crucial explains the differences between memory generations and physical module types in its RAM compatibility guide. Use that as general guidance; the exact computer or board documentation determines what fits your system.

Find your computer or motherboard model

Branded desktop or laptop

Record the complete manufacturer model or product number, including any submodel. Check the label on the device, its system information, purchase record, or the manufacturer’s support page. A model family by itself may not identify the memory configuration precisely.

  • Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
  • Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
  • VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
  • A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
  • A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds

Custom-built desktop

Find the motherboard’s printed model name or identify it using system information utilities, then open that board’s official specifications or manual. If the maker distinguishes board revisions, match the revision printed on your board.

Check how much RAM is installed

Installed capacity is useful context, but it does not tell you the maximum the computer supports. Kingston documents these routes for checking installed memory:

  • Windows 11: Right-click Start and select System.
  • Windows 10: Open Settings → System → About.
  • macOS: Open the Apple menu and select About This Mac.
  • Linux: Inspect /proc/meminfo.

For more detail about installed modules, a system utility may report a module’s type, speed, or part number. Treat that as a clue, not as proof that the computer supports a larger capacity or another module configuration. Kingston describes the operating-system checks and related memory guidance in its Desktop/Notebook Memory support page.

Read the official specifications or manual

Search the computer maker’s support page for the full model, then open its specification sheet or manual. For a custom desktop, use the motherboard maker’s documentation. Record each of the following before shopping:

  • Supported DDR generation and module form factor.
  • Maximum total capacity and maximum per module or slot.
  • Number of memory slots and supported module sizes.
  • Whether memory is soldered, shared, or otherwise unavailable for replacement.
  • Supported speed and any configuration, density, or firmware limits.

Do not infer a maximum from the amount currently installed: the system may have unused capacity, or some of its memory may be soldered and not replaceable. Crucial’s guide also directs readers to motherboard specifications for capacity and slot limits.

Cross-check with a compatibility finder

Once you have the exact model, use a manufacturer compatibility tool as a second check. Kingston Memory Finder supports system/device and part-number searches. Crucial’s selector uses the computer manufacturer, product line, and model; its System Scanner analyzes system configuration and recommends upgrades. Kingston also offers a PC Scanner.

  • Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
  • G.SKILL RipjawsV Series DDR4 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F4-3200C16D-16GVKB
  • Non-ECC, DDR4 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
  • Includes JEDEC default profile, and Intel XMP memory overclock profile
  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

A scanner or product listing is a vendor’s recommendation, not a replacement for confirming the exact device identity and its official limits. If the tool’s result conflicts with the computer or motherboard maker’s documentation, verify the complete model and submodel with the manufacturer before buying. Crucial describes its selector and computer-spec checking in its computer specifications guide.

Compare candidate RAM kits against the system limits

After confirming what the system supports, compare candidate kits on the specifications that determine fit and operation:

What to compare What must match or stay within limits
Generation and form factor Use the supported DDR generation and the module type specified for the system, such as DIMM or SO-DIMM.
Capacity Check both the kit’s total capacity and each module’s capacity against the system maximum and per-slot or per-module limits.
Speed Check the supported transfer rate and whether a faster standard module will operate at a lower default speed.
Configuration Follow the required module count and slot placement; check pairing, channel, density, rank, ECC, registered-memory, and BIOS requirements where relevant.
System identification Match the listing to the full computer or motherboard model and revision, not just a series name.

Do not assume that a particular capacity, such as 16 GB or 32 GB, is universally supported. The model-specific maximum and permitted module sizes decide what is appropriate for your computer.

Understand speed readings and downclocking

A faster standard memory module may run at the processor or motherboard’s supported default speed rather than its advertised maximum. Kingston’s support guidance says: “Yes, most systems will safely and automatically clock industry standard memory module speeds down to the processor or motherboard’s default supported memory speed.” This is not a guarantee that every kit, overclocking profile, or configuration will work at the advertised speed; actual support depends on the processor, motherboard, firmware, and memory arrangement.

Utilities may report a DRAM clock frequency rather than the effective data-transfer rate. DDR transfers data twice per clock cycle, so do not compare a utility’s clock reading directly with a kit’s advertised transfer rate without accounting for that distinction. Kingston discusses this terminology and memory speed behavior in its memory support guidance.

If an upgrade does not boot or shows less memory than expected

A failure to start or an unexpectedly low recognized capacity does not by itself prove the module is defective. Check these causes in order, following the device maker’s installation and safety guidance:

  1. Confirm the new module has the correct DDR generation and physical form factor.
  2. Recheck the total and per-module capacity limits, slot availability, and any soldered-memory configuration.
  3. Verify module density or rank restrictions if the computer is older or the documentation specifies them.
  4. Check that the modules are seated and installed in the recommended slots. Reseat them only if the manufacturer’s instructions make this appropriate for your device.
  5. Review the computer or board maker’s BIOS notes for a relevant memory-support update. Do not assume every upgrade needs a BIOS update.
  6. If the system still fails, consult the computer or motherboard maker with the exact model, module part number, and observed behavior.

Kingston notes that some older systems may not support newer, higher-density DRAM chips, and that some newer memory designs may need BIOS optimization. Those are possibilities to check against the exact platform documentation, not universal requirements.
