How to Uninstall or Disable Microsoft Copilot on Windows

Remove the standalone Copilot app from Windows Settings, or disable Copilot separately in supported Microsoft 365 apps.

You can uninstall the standalone Copilot app from Windows Settings. That does not disable Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or other Microsoft 365 apps; those have separate controls. Choose the steps for the Copilot surface you want to change.

Uninstall the Copilot app from Windows

These steps remove the standalone Windows Copilot app. Microsoft says it should already be installed by default on new Windows 11 PCs; it is also available from Microsoft Store. [Microsoft Support]

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Search for Copilot.
  3. Select the More options (…) menu beside Copilot, then choose Uninstall.
  4. Confirm the prompt if Windows asks you to.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Search for Copilot.
  3. Select Uninstall and confirm if prompted.

If Copilot does not appear or Settings does not offer an uninstall option, Windows has general uninstall routes through Start or Control Panel. Those are alternatives for Windows apps and programs, not a guarantee that Copilot can be removed that way. Microsoft notes that some apps cannot be uninstalled from Settings. See Microsoft’s general uninstall guidance.

Turn off Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps

Uninstalling the Windows app does not change Copilot inside Microsoft 365 desktop apps. For supported versions, Microsoft provides a separate checkbox in each app and on each device. [Microsoft Support]

#1 Best Overall
  1. Open the Microsoft 365 app you want to change, such as Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
  2. Go to File > Options > Copilot.
  3. Clear Enable Copilot, then select OK.
  4. Close and restart the app.

Repeat these steps separately in every app and on every device where you want the setting changed. Microsoft says this checkbox applies when you are signed in with a personal Microsoft account; the described setting is unavailable with a work or school account. Availability also depends on the app version.

If the checkbox is missing

Microsoft describes changing account privacy settings as an alternative when Enable Copilot is unavailable. This affects other connected experiences as well, so it is broader than a Copilot-only switch. Review Microsoft’s Copilot settings guidance before changing those privacy controls.

Hiding the Copilot icon does not disable Copilot

Removing the Copilot icon from a Microsoft 365 app’s ribbon only changes what is displayed. Microsoft says Copilot may still be accessible through other methods, so use the app’s setting above if your goal is to turn the feature off.

For organization-managed PCs

Microsoft says IT administrators can remove the Windows Copilot app with a PowerShell script. Because the applicable script and prerequisites are not included in the user-facing instructions cited here, administrators should use Microsoft’s current Windows Copilot app guidance rather than running an unverified command.
