Choose an agentic pentesting tool by checking whether it can safely test your actual targets, produce evidence your team can reproduce and review, and fit the way you manage security work. Require written authorization and scope, least-privilege credentials, impact controls, a visible stop mechanism, and human review before acting on findings. Then compare finalists in a controlled pilot using the same targets and success criteria. “Agentic” branding and speed claims are not evidence that a tool is safer or more effective.
What makes a pentesting tool agentic?
An agentic system works toward a testing objective through multiple steps: it can plan, use tools, interpret responses, and adapt what it does next. That differs from a scanner that reports matches or a fixed workflow, but the label does not tell you how much a product actually does autonomously.

Ask a vendor to demonstrate which actions are autonomous, which are deterministic scripts, where an operator must approve an action, and how you can observe and stop a run. Treat the demonstration as a description of the workflow—not proof of coverage, safety, or finding quality.
Start with the attack surface you need to test
Make an inventory before comparing products. Include the assets and workflows that matter to your team, then turn them into an expected-coverage checklist you can use during a pilot.
#1 Best Overall
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Web applications, APIs, authentication flows, and business-critical user journeys.
- Cloud configuration, identities and permissions, attack paths, and external exposure.
- If your organization builds or operates AI agents: tool invocations, delegated or multi-agent work, memory handling, and prompt-injection chains.
The AWS Well-Architected Agentic AI Lens recommends testing design documents, code, and running applications, with tests matched to agent behavior rather than limited to known web-vulnerability signatures. Ask each supplier to map supported surfaces and authentication methods to your inventory. Confirm whether you can provide API documentation, source code, design documents, threat models, or credentials, and where that material is processed. AWS Security Agent documentation describes optional application context and common authentication methods; HackerOne’s help documentation describes scope-bound testing and data handling. These are product disclosures, not evidence that all vendors implement the same capabilities.
Make authorization and safety controls verifiable
Before any run, document who owns the targets or has authorized testing, exactly which domains and systems are allowed, what is excluded, the test window, credential privileges, rate limits, alert handling, escalation contacts, and how to stop the test. Start in pre-production or an isolated environment when possible. Confirm operators can see planned or live actions and that the tool can prevent out-of-scope access.
A product’s guardrails reduce risk; they do not remove it. AWS documentation describes target ownership validation through DNS or HTTP, out-of-scope URLs, minimal-impact payloads, and traffic-velocity controls. It also warns that non-obvious interactions with business logic can still have unintended effects and recommends pre-production testing. Microsoft’s Red team agent guidance calls for least-privileged identities, formal change management for active exploitation, and human approval before actions proceed; it warns that active validation may affect an environment.

Judge findings by evidence, not volume
For each reported issue, look for the affected asset, the exact request or action sequence, supporting evidence, an explanation of impact, a confidence level, reproducibility, and a route to remediation or retest. Find out which results are validated automatically, which are replayed, and which are inferred. Have a human reviewer reproduce a sample during the pilot and record false positives, missed issues, coverage gaps, and unsafe behavior.
AWS says it uses deterministic validators where possible and otherwise independently replays steps; unverified findings are suppressed by default. Microsoft cautions that AI-generated results can be wrong or incomplete and requires human review before action. For either product—or any other candidate—treat the output as a lead for review, not authorization to make a change.
Coverage claims also need scrutiny. AWS says its breadth-first exploration is stochastic and cannot guarantee discovery of all critical application logic and endpoints. Compare what a tool actually exercised with your expected-coverage checklist instead of equating a broad claim or a large finding count with complete testing.
Check data handling and operating fit
Map the tool to your CI/CD, vulnerability-management, ticketing, identity, logging, reporting, and change-management processes. Ask where it runs, what data it retains, who can access results, whether data residency requirements are met, and whether customer data may be used to train or fine-tune models. Obtain the answers for the specific engagement in contractual and data-processing terms, including retention, access, and subprocessors.

Operational limits can change whether a product is usable in your workflow. AWS documentation, accessed October 7, 2026, says Security Agent has no existing security-tool or CI/CD integration, no public API or scheduled runs, and supports five concurrent penetration-test runs per account. It says most runs complete within 16 hours. Recheck these documentation claims and confirm current availability and limits with AWS before relying on them.
HackerOne’s Help Center says customer and researcher data is not used to train or fine-tune the generative AI models or agents used by its Agentic Testing platform, and describes scope-bound autonomy and controls for traffic and ending engagements. Confirm how those statements apply to the service, contract, and region you are considering.
Compare products by service model and maturity
A self-service platform, a managed engagement, and a human-supported penetration-testing service may address different gaps. Decide whether your team needs software to run tests on demand, outside experts to perform or validate work, or a combination. Preview status matters too: determine whether you can tolerate invitation limits, changing features, and point-in-time results that may need to be rerun after material changes.
| Candidate | What official material describes | What to resolve before selection |
|---|---|---|
| AWS Security Agent, now part of AWS Continuum | AWS describes on-demand penetration testing using supplied application context and credentials, multi-step attack scenarios, documented impact and reproducible paths, ownership validation, scoped targets, finding validation, and endpoint or action logs. | Confirm current availability, scope, price, contract terms, and workflow changes. AWS says discovery is not guaranteed, recommends pre-production, and documents the operational limits described above. |
| Microsoft Project Perception Red team agents | Microsoft describes testing of cloud topology, identity, permissions, exposure, attack paths, and detection coverage, with human approval before actions and least-privilege guidance. | Microsoft describes the product as a limited public preview that is invitation-only. Confirm access and supported environments. A session covers one environment; results are point-in-time, and quality depends on granted permissions. |
| HackerOne Agentic PTaaS | HackerOne’s January 26, 2026 announcement presents a service combining AI agents and human experts across reconnaissance, setup, exploitation, and validation. | Confirm service scope, human-validation deliverables, cadence, data retention, integrations, availability, and commercial terms for your region and requirements. |
These are examples, not an exhaustive market survey or an independent ranking. Vendor descriptions do not establish comparative performance. The reviewed official materials do not establish a neutral head-to-head benchmark or comparable current prices for these options. Do not compare vendor benchmark claims unless targets, permissions, scope, success criteria, scoring, and test environments are genuinely comparable.
Run a controlled pilot with common success criteria
Use the same representative targets, written scope, least-privilege identities, approved test cases, and success criteria for every finalist. Define safe stop conditions before the first run. A useful scorecard separates security value from operational cost:
Best Value
- Which expected attack surfaces were exercised, and which endpoints or workflows were discovered?
- How many findings were confirmed, inferred, or left unverified? Can reviewers reproduce them?
- Which scenarios were missed? What false positives, policy violations, unexpected traffic, or operator interventions occurred?
- How much time did triage and retesting take? Were reports useful, and how much integration work was required?
- Did deployment, data handling, support, and contract terms meet your requirements? What total cost did the vendor quote?
Keep the pilot representative but bounded: a limited target set and clear exclusions make it easier to attribute unexpected behavior and stop safely. Record reviewer agreement and gaps alongside findings, rather than allowing an impressive demonstration or raw result count to decide the purchase.
Separate product claims from evidence
HackerOne Chief Product Officer Nidhi Aggarwal said in the company’s January 26, 2026 announcement: “Security teams aren’t looking for more findings. They are seeking to reduce risk exposure.” That is a vendor executive’s framing, not independent evidence of product performance. The reviewed official sources contain no hands-on comparison or verified current price schedule for the named candidates. Obtain current terms directly and use your own pilot to judge fit.
