How to Uninstall Antivirus Software Completely When Switching Programs

A safe antivirus switch starts with the operating system’s uninstaller, uses the outgoing vendor’s official removal tool only if needed, and ends with a protection check.

To uninstall antivirus software completely when switching programs, remove it with Windows or macOS’s normal app-removal method, follow the old antivirus vendor’s instructions, and restart if directed. If standard removal fails, use only that publisher’s official removal tool for your exact product. Before you finish, confirm the replacement antivirus is running—or, on Windows, that Microsoft Defender Antivirus has become active.

Before you uninstall: identify the product and your next protection

Check the exact name and version of the antivirus you are removing, and whether your computer runs Windows or macOS. Removal tools are product-specific; a utility intended for one vendor or version is not a universal antivirus remover.

Decide what will protect the device after removal: the replacement program you plan to install, or Windows’ built-in Microsoft Defender Antivirus. Avoid leaving protection unconfirmed between products. Microsoft cautions that removing security software can leave a PC unprotected; its guidance is to ensure Defender Antivirus is enabled and Windows Firewall is on if no other antimalware program is installed (Microsoft’s virus-protection guidance).

Uninstall antivirus on Windows

Start with Windows’ normal app-removal options

  1. Open the installed-app list: go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
  2. Find the antivirus, select its menu or entry, choose Uninstall, and follow the on-screen prompts. Approve administrator access only when it is requested by the intended antivirus uninstaller.
  3. If the app is missing from Settings or will not uninstall there, try searching for it from Start, or use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and select Uninstall.
  4. Follow any restart instruction from the uninstaller or the antivirus publisher before continuing to the replacement.

Microsoft documents these removal routes for Windows 10 and 11 and notes that some apps cannot be removed from Settings or may require troubleshooting (Microsoft’s uninstall guidance).

If ordinary removal fails, use the vendor’s official utility

Do not start deleting antivirus folders, drivers, or registry entries by hand. Microsoft says some security programs may not uninstall completely through the usual route and directs users to the software publisher. Download a removal utility from the outgoing vendor’s official support site, confirm that it covers your product and version, and follow its current instructions.

  • Bitdefender: its support index lists removal tools by product or brand, including Windows and Mac options. Choose the entry for the installed product rather than assuming one tool covers every Bitdefender app (Bitdefender removal-tool index).
  • Norton: Norton recommends Norton 360 Remover when standard Windows removal fails. Its instructions note that this tool does not remove Norton Private Browser; handle that browser separately using its own instructions if needed (Norton removal guidance).
  • Avast: Avast Clear is for specified current Avast Windows products. Check the utility’s support page to confirm that it applies to the installed product before using it (Avast Clear instructions).

After using a vendor tool, restart if it or the publisher directs you to. Microsoft says a reboot will likely be needed after uninstalling each antimalware app, but the requirement is not universal; follow the instructions for your product (Microsoft; Bitdefender; Norton).

Uninstall antivirus on macOS

  1. Open Applications and look for the antivirus app’s folder or an uninstaller included with the app.
  2. If there is an uninstaller, run it and follow the outgoing vendor’s Mac-specific directions. Security products can install components beyond the visible app, so use the publisher’s instructions for those components too.
  3. If there is no uninstaller, do not assume that dragging the app to Trash is correct for every product. Norton’s cross-vendor Mac guidance describes moving the app to Trash, emptying Trash, and restarting when no uninstaller is available; check the actual antivirus publisher’s current instructions before using that route (Norton’s Mac removal guidance).

Bitdefender also lists Mac removal tools in its product-specific support index. Use a tool only if the publisher identifies it for your installed product.

Install the replacement or check Windows Defender

Complete the old product’s removal process and any directed restart before installing the replacement. Bitdefender advises restarting after removal before installing Bitdefender and cautions against running multiple security products together. That is a reason to make a clean handoff, not proof that every combination always conflicts.

On Windows, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and check the protection status. Open Manage providers to inspect which antivirus provider Windows recognizes as active. Microsoft says compatible third-party antivirus turns Microsoft Defender Antivirus off, and that Defender should return to active mode after the third-party product is removed. If no provider is active or Windows reports a problem, follow Microsoft’s or the antivirus vendor’s support guidance rather than assuming the computer is protected (Microsoft: Virus & threat protection in Windows Security). Microsoft also documents how to scan an item with Windows Security (Microsoft scan instructions).

Uninstalling the app is separate from canceling a subscription

Removing antivirus from a device does not necessarily stop renewal or billing. Norton explicitly says uninstalling its app does not automatically cancel its subscription. If you intend to stop paying, check the vendor account and follow that vendor’s cancellation instructions; do not infer the policy for another provider from Norton’s rule.
