Infrared wireless communication sends data by varying light that a receiver can detect. In an IrDA link, that light travels through free space between devices, so an unobstructed, well-aligned optical path matters. IrDA is one specific protocol suite—not a name for every technology that uses infrared light.
How does infrared wireless communication work?
A transmitter encodes information by changing an infrared optical signal; a receiver detects those changes and interprets them as data. In an IrDA connection, two devices exchange information across free space rather than through a cable. Microsoft describes IrDA as a protocol suite for wireless, line-of-sight connectivity between devices, while Microchip’s application note covers the physical layer and selection of emitters and photodiodes for a free-space circuit.

The optical signal is not visible to people, but the link still depends on the path between transmitter and receiver. A hand, a closed enclosure, or another obstacle can block it. If the devices are pointed away from one another, the receiver may not detect the signal reliably. The practical result is that placement and orientation matter, though the available documentation does not establish one universal IrDA range or speed.

Both can use infrared light, but sharing a type of light does not make their protocols interchangeable. A device with an IR emitter is not necessarily able to exchange IrDA data.

Does an infrared connection need line of sight?
For the IrDA device links described by Microsoft, yes: the connection is line of sight. The transmitter and receiver need a sufficiently clear optical path, and their orientation affects whether the receiver can detect the transmitted signal. This is why an infrared link can be sensitive to obstruction or misalignment.
That description applies to the IrDA link, not every system that uses infrared. Other optical-wireless standards define different operating environments and scopes. Do not assume that a range or application described for one standard applies to another.

How IrDA differs from other infrared and optical-wireless standards
Infrared is a region of the optical spectrum, not a single communications protocol. The standards below address distinct applications; their figures and catalogue status belong to those standards alone.

| Standard or profile | Scope | Wavelength or range stated by source | Status or qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| IrDA | Protocol suite for wireless, line-of-sight device links | No universal range or speed established in the cited documentation | Microsoft’s cited material is legacy Windows documentation; it explains the protocol concept, not support in current Windows releases. |
| ISO 21214:2015 | Infrared air interface for intelligent transport systems, including vehicle-to-roadside and vehicle-to-vehicle communication | 820–1,010 nm; the ISO abstract states support for distances up to 100 m and possible longer distances of 300–1,000 m | These are scope-specific statements from Edition 2, published in August 2015—not a range claim for ordinary IrDA devices. Check the ISO catalogue for current status before relying on it. |
| IEEE 802.15.7-2018 | Short-range optical wireless PHY/MAC standard | Scope spans 10,000–190 nm | IEEE lists the standard as active and notes amendment 802.15.7a-2024. Its scope considers ambient-light noise and interference and says it adheres to applicable eye-safety regulations. |
| IEEE/ISO 11073-30300-2004 | Short-range infrared transport profile for point-of-care medical-device communications | Not stated in the cited catalogue entry | Historical example only: IEEE marks it inactive-reserved, reports inactivation in 2021, and records withdrawal on 2025-10-10. |
These standards should not be treated as interchangeable. For example, ISO 21214’s transport-system distance figures do not establish how far an unspecified IrDA device can communicate, and IEEE 802.15.7 is a broader optical-wireless PHY/MAC standard rather than another name for IrDA.

How Bluetooth relates to IrDA
Bluetooth SIG describes IrOBEX as an application-level relationship: it lets applications use features available within the IrDA protocol hierarchy over either the IrDA or Bluetooth stack. This does not mean Bluetooth uses infrared as its wireless transmission medium. The shared application-level capability is separate from the physical link.

A simple learning circuit can use an infrared emitter to transmit an optical signal and a photodiode to detect it. Microchip’s AN243 discusses the infrared physical layer and selecting discrete emitter and photodiode components for circuit implementation. A component-level demonstration can illustrate optical transmission and reception, but having those parts does not by itself make a circuit IrDA-compatible.
