Should you switch to COSMIC? KDE contributor and developer Niccolò Venerandi says no for himself—not because he dismisses COSMIC, but because he is attached to KDE Plasma. His comparison praises COSMIC’s theming while recognizing Plasma’s deeper customization and mature community. It is one developer’s perspective, not an official KDE position or a universal verdict.
What Venerandi says about COSMIC
In an article published by LibreNews on 16 September 2026, Venerandi revisited System76’s COSMIC desktop environment after nearly a year away. He described development in that period as focused largely on stability, while noting user-facing changes he appreciated. OSNews quoted his opening assessment in its 6 October 2026 coverage: “It’s been almost a year since I’ve last tried COSMIC; though development since then has mostly been centered around stability (going from late alpha to stable releases now!) there have been a fair bit of user-facing changes too which I adore.” OSNews

When Venerandi asks whether he should switch, his answer is no, and he explicitly ties that choice to his attachment to Plasma. His article title, “Is COSMIC DE mogging KDE Plasma?”, is rhetorical; it should not be read as a claim that COSMIC is objectively better. Venerandi’s LibreNews article

Customization and maturity
Venerandi points to Plasma’s long history, modularity, and established community as reasons it offers a breadth of customization COSMIC does not aim to match. In his 16 September 2026 article, he characterizes Plasma as having been around for more than 25 years; that is his figure, not an independently verified statistic. LibreNews

That distinction is about scope, not a simple quality ranking. Someone who values extensive configuration and a mature community may find Plasma’s established approach a better fit. Venerandi’s comments do not establish that every Plasma user will prefer it, or that COSMIC lacks useful customization.
What Venerandi admires about COSMIC
Venerandi specifically praises COSMIC’s theming options and sees merit in its design, even while preferring Plasma. The available account does not enumerate particular theme controls, so it is more useful to take the point at face value than to infer specific features: COSMIC’s visual customization is one of the things that caught his attention.

OSNews’ application-ecosystem concern
OSNews raises a separate practical concern: COSMIC has a smaller application ecosystem, including few applications built with its distinct Rust-based toolkit, so users may also rely on GTK- and Qt-based applications. This is OSNews’s assessment, not a measured application count or a verified compatibility survey. It does not establish that all GTK or Qt applications look or behave inconsistently in COSMIC. OSNews
For a prospective switcher, the relevant question is whether the applications they depend on are available and work well in their own setup. The cited articles do not provide a distribution-by-distribution compatibility check.

How to decide whether to switch
Venerandi’s preference is useful as a comparison, not as a substitute for your own workflow. Weigh the differences that matter to you:
- Configuration: Plasma is the stronger fit if you want the breadth associated with its long history, modularity, and community.
- Visual style: COSMIC may appeal if its design and theming options fit your preferences.
- Applications: Check the specific software you rely on rather than assuming the ecosystem concern applies equally to every user or distribution.
- Personal workflow: Venerandi stays with Plasma because he is attached to it. Your habits and preferences may lead to a different choice.
Neither the LibreNews article nor OSNews’s coverage establishes that one desktop is best for everyone. They offer distinct considerations—customization, theming, application availability, and personal fit—rather than a measured head-to-head result.
