In Google Sheets on a computer, select a cell and press Ctrl+U on Windows/PC or ⌘+U on Mac to underline its text. To underline only a word or characters, first select that text inside the cell, then apply underline.
Underline all text in a cell

Open your spreadsheet and select the cell—or range of cells—you want to format. Google Sheets supports formatting one cell or multiple selected cells.

Underline only part of a cell’s text

Double-click the cell to edit its contents.

Select the characters or words you want to underline, then choose an underline formatting option. Google’s spreadsheet editing and formatting guidance describes selecting part of a cell’s text before applying a formatting option.

Selecting the cell formats its contents as a whole; selecting text within the cell targets only that portion. Google’s screen-reader guidance for Sheets also distinguishes these two selection methods.

Google cautions that “Some shortcuts might not work for all languages or keyboards.” Check your keyboard layout and language, or open the shortcut list from within Sheets. You can also select the target cell or text and use the formatting controls rather than relying on the shortcut; the available sources do not specify an exact current menu path for underline.
