Buying a movie ticket can involve more than the advertised admission price: an online booking fee, a higher-priced seat, or a premium-format surcharge may change the total before you pay. The exact rules vary by theater, seller, location, and transaction, so compare the final checkout price for the same screening and ticket choices—not just the headline price.
Why does a movie ticket cost more at checkout?
The starting price is only one part of the purchase. Depending on the theater and screening, the total may include base admission, an online booking or convenience fee, a seat-tier difference, and a format surcharge. Taxes or optional additions may also appear before payment. There is no single nationwide fee amount established by the available chain policies.

Online booking or convenience fees
Some theater chains charge fees when tickets are bought through a website or app, and a fee may apply to each ticket rather than once per order. Regal describes booking fees for app and website purchases and says its online convenience fees are not refunded under its stated policy. Regal’s ticket and cancellation help page sets out its terms.

Seat choice and screen format
A preferred seat or a premium screen can change the price even when the theater and showtime stay the same. In 2023, the Associated Press reported that AMC’s then-announced Sightline program priced seats by location at participating theaters, with middle seats costing more and front seats less. The report described a $1–$2 difference for middle seats at the time. That is historical context, not a current quote or a rule for every AMC location.
The same AP report noted that premium large-format and 3D screenings can cost more. Its example of an approximately $16.50 3D premium-format ticket for Avatar: The Way of Water was specific to that film and period; it is not an industry average or a current estimate. Why is the price hard to compare?
A listed price may describe only one combination of theater, date, showtime, seat, format, and seller. Comparing two listings without matching those details can make a cheaper option look better than it is. A per-ticket fee, for example, has a larger effect when you buy several tickets; a different screen format or seat tier can also make the totals incomparable.

- whether the booking fee is charged per ticket or per order;
- the screen format and any seat-tier pricing;
- whether a membership waives a fee, and whether its cost makes sense for how often you go;
- the refund terms for both the ticket and any fee.
Do not assume that buying at the theater counter always avoids an online fee. Check the venue’s terms for the specific purchase method.
What does the FTC fee rule mean for movie tickets?
The Federal Trade Commission’s staff FAQ, dated May 2025, says businesses covered by its live-event ticket rule must show the total price upfront when advertising prices, including mandatory fees. The guidance allows certain taxes and genuinely optional add-ons to be excluded from that displayed total, but says they must be disclosed before payment. It also says dynamic pricing is permitted if the pricing information is not misleading. Read the FTC’s FAQ on the rule and its May 2025 announcement.

The reviewed FTC materials do not establish whether cinema tickets fall within the rule’s covered event scope. They therefore do not support a blanket claim that every movie theater must follow this rule for ticket pricing.
What was the Fandango settlement about?
The Beer v. Fandango settlement site describes allegations about timely disclosure of convenience fees for California theater purchases made from June 11, 2020, through June 17, 2024, and separate FanClub membership allegations involving California and Washington consumers. Fandango denied the allegations. A settlement notice describes claims and settlement terms; it is not a finding that the company broke the law.

The site lists a claim deadline of August 17, 2026, which had passed as of October 11, 2026. It describes a $3.25 cash benefit or voucher for eligible convenience-fee class members and a $7.50 voucher for eligible FanClub class members, subject to the settlement’s class definitions and terms. Check the official settlement site for eligibility details; the listed deadline has passed.
