On a Mac using the U.S. keyboard layout, press Option+1 to type the inverted exclamation mark: ¡. The regular exclamation mark is Shift+1. Option+1 depends on the active keyboard layout, so use Keyboard Viewer if the shortcut gives you a different character.

Type ¡ with the U.S. keyboard layout

Press Option+1. This produces ¡ when the U.S. keyboard layout is active; Shift+1 produces the ordinary exclamation mark, !. The shortcut may differ with another input source.

Check the active layout with Keyboard Viewer

Keyboard Viewer shows the keys and modifier mappings for the selected input source. Open it from the Input menu in the menu bar by choosing Show Keyboard Viewer. Select the relevant input source, then press Option—or Option and Shift—to see the characters assigned to those combinations. Press the physical key shown for ¡, or click that key in the viewer. See Apple’s guide to using Keyboard Viewer.

If the Input menu is not visible, go to Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit and enable Show Input menu in menu bar. Apple also explains this setup in its Keyboard Viewer guide.

Add a Spanish input source for regular typing

If you type in Spanish often, add a Spanish input source at Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit. Then select the desired source from the Input menu when you need it. Apple’s input sources guide covers adding and switching sources.
