How to Connect a Samsung Blu-ray Player to a TV and Home Theater System

For the simplest setup, connect the Samsung Blu-ray player’s HDMI OUT to an HDMI IN on the TV, then select that TV input. To use a receiver, route the player into the receiver first and connect the receiver’s HDMI output to the TV. Optical and ARC/eARC are alternatives when you need audio to travel between the TV and an external sound system; the available formats depend on the exact devices.

Choose the connection that fits your equipment

Check the ports on the player, TV, and receiver or soundbar before connecting anything. Port labels and supported audio formats vary by model; Samsung’s guide to Blu-ray player connections can help identify common ports, but use your own device manuals to confirm compatibility.

Connection path Use it when How audio travels
Player to TV by HDMI The TV has an available HDMI input and you want the simplest wiring. HDMI carries both video and audio from the player to the TV.
Player through receiver or compatible soundbar You want the audio system to receive the player’s signal directly and the receiver has an HDMI input and output. The player sends audio and video to the receiver; the receiver sends video onward to the TV.
Player to TV, then TV to audio system by optical The TV and audio system both have optical ports, or HDMI audio return is unavailable. Optical carries TV audio to the audio system. Samsung’s cited guidance lists PCM, Dolby Digital, or DTS and up to 5.1-channel audio.
Player to TV, then TV to audio system by ARC/eARC You want the TV to send audio to the receiver or soundbar, including audio from TV apps, and both devices support the relevant feature. Audio returns from the TV to the audio system over HDMI. Supported formats depend on the connected products and content.

A plain HDMI cable is needed for either HDMI wiring path; choose a length that reaches between the devices and verify that the required HDMI ports are free. Optical requires an optical digital audio cable. These connection choices are not interchangeable: follow the port labels and the manuals for your particular models.

Connect the Blu-ray player directly to the TV with HDMI

  1. Turn off the devices first if convenient.
  2. Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the player’s HDMI OUT and the other to an HDMI IN on the TV. Samsung’s Blu-ray-to-TV instructions say: “Connect one end of the HDMI video and audio cable to the HDMI OUT on your blu-ray Player.”
  3. Turn on the TV and player.
  4. Using the TV remote’s Source or Input control, select the HDMI port used for the player.
  5. Play a disc and check for both picture and sound.

If there is no picture, confirm that the TV is on the same HDMI input used for the player and reseat both ends of the cable.

Route the player through a receiver or home theater system

  1. Connect the player’s HDMI OUT to an HDMI IN on the receiver or compatible soundbar.
  2. Connect the receiver’s HDMI OUT to an HDMI IN on the TV.
  3. On the TV, select the input connected to the receiver. On the receiver, select the input connected to the Blu-ray player.
  4. Play a disc and check that the picture reaches the TV and sound comes from the audio system.

If the receiver has no sound, verify its selected source and whether it can decode the audio format the player is sending. If the receiver’s HDMI inputs are occupied, another arrangement is to connect the player directly to the TV and return TV audio to the receiver by ARC/eARC or optical, if both devices support that connection. Samsung explains TV-to-receiver audio routing in its home theater audio guidance.

Use optical, ARC, or eARC for TV-to-audio-system sound

Optical audio

Connect the TV’s optical output to the receiver or soundbar’s optical input, then select the corresponding input on the audio system. Optical is useful when HDMI ARC/eARC is unavailable, but it does not pass every higher-bandwidth audio format. Samsung’s optical and ARC guidance describes optical support for PCM, Dolby Digital, or DTS, up to 5.1 channels.

HDMI ARC or eARC

Use the HDMI ports specifically marked ARC or eARC on both the TV and audio device. With compatible Samsung equipment, eARC can support formats including DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS:X, Dolby TrueHD, and Dolby Atmos; the TV, audio system, and source content must all support the format in use. Samsung’s eARC instructions say to enable Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) and set eARC mode to Auto on compatible products. Labels, menus, and availability vary by model.

Fix a no-sound or surround-sound problem

  • Check the selected inputs: Make sure the TV is on the receiver’s HDMI input and the receiver or soundbar is on the source connected to the player. For optical or ARC/eARC, select the matching audio-system input.
  • Check the ports and cables: Confirm that HDMI OUT is connected to HDMI IN in the intended direction, or that the optical cable connects the TV output to the audio-device input. Reseat both ends.
  • Try a supported player output: If a receiver cannot decode the selected bitstream, try PCM. The best setting depends on the connected equipment and wiring route.
  • For the DTS setup Samsung describes: On the player, its example path is Sound > Digital Output > Bitstream (unprocessed); Samsung also suggests disabling Secondary Audio when that option is available. Player menus differ, and these settings are not universal fixes.
  • Confirm model support: Do not assume every Samsung TV supports DTS or that all Samsung Blu-ray players expose identical audio options. Samsung’s DTS troubleshooting guide notes that compatibility varies by model. Samsung also provides TV audio-format settings guidance; check the manuals for the exact player, TV, and audio system.
