How to Run Windows Apps on a Chromebook: Your Options in 2026

You usually can’t install Windows desktop apps directly on a Chromebook. Find the right alternative: a web app, Linux version, remote PC, or organization-managed delivery.

You generally can’t install and run ordinary Windows desktop apps directly on a Chromebook. Instead, use a web or Chromebook app if it supports your workflow, connect to a Windows PC you already have, or ask your school or employer whether it provides Windows apps through virtualization. ChromeOS’s Linux environment is for Linux apps, not a general Windows compatibility layer.

Choose the route that matches the app you need

Start with the exact task and program, not the assumption that Windows itself must be installed. A web or Chromebook version may be enough; if you need a specific Windows-only desktop program, remote access or an organization-managed app service may be more appropriate.

  • Need common productivity features? Check for a web or Play Store version first.
  • Have another Windows computer? Use remote access so the program runs on that PC.
  • Using a school or work Chromebook? Ask IT whether it delivers the required Windows app.
  • Considering Linux on ChromeOS? Use it only for software that has a Linux version.

Before choosing, verify the exact app’s features and file compatibility, whether it needs to work offline, which peripherals or graphics capabilities it requires, and whether device policy or network access could prevent the route from working.

Try a web or Chromebook version first

Google recommends web apps and Play Store apps for Chromebook tasks and lists options for common productivity needs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneDrive. These alternatives may not include every feature of a Windows desktop edition. Check the specific workflow you rely on, especially macros, plug-ins, specialized file handling, or other desktop-only features. See Google’s recommended Chromebook apps.

Google describes web apps as websites that can be installed so they open from the Launcher or home screen. Some have offline features, but Google cautions that others may not work fully without an internet connection. Check the app’s own offline behavior before relying on it away from a network. Google explains how to use web apps.

Use Linux only for applications with a Linux version

ChromeOS can provide a Debian Linux development environment for Linux command-line tools, code editors, IDEs, and other Linux applications. It does not install Windows or make Windows programs generally compatible. Google also lists limitations such as unsupported hardware acceleration and Android emulators. Google’s Linux setup and limitations explain the feature’s scope.

To enable it, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Developers > Linux development environment. Setup may take 10 minutes or more, according to Google. The option may be unavailable if a work or school administrator blocks it. Install Linux software only when the application’s publisher supports a Linux version; a Windows installer is not a substitute.

Access a Windows PC you already have

Chrome Remote Desktop is an option Google lists for accessing another computer. In this arrangement, the Windows program runs on the separate Windows PC, while the Chromebook connects to and controls it. This is remote use, not local Windows installation. The PC must be available, and remote access must be configured. Consult Google’s Chromebook app recommendations for its reference to Chrome Remote Desktop, then follow the service’s current instructions to configure access.

This route depends on the other computer and a suitable connection. Check whether the app’s performance, file-transfer needs, peripherals, and offline requirements can be met through your remote session; a Chromebook alone cannot run the Windows program this way.

Ask IT about organization-delivered Windows apps

A school or employer may provide access to Windows applications through a managed app-delivery service. Google’s Parallels Desktop for ChromeOS setup guidance says Parallels is being discontinued and that support for existing customers ran until April 21, 2026. That date has passed. The setup was administered by an organization and required a Windows disc image and license, Parallels licenses, and managed configuration; it is not a current self-service route for a new Chromebook owner. Google says, “Alternatively, you can explore Cameyo as a solution for Windows app delivery using app virtualization.” Read Google’s Parallels guidance for the status and context.

Can you install Windows itself on a Chromebook?

There is no universal, supported method established here for installing ordinary Windows desktop apps locally on every Chromebook. Google’s Parallels route was organization-managed and is discontinued; Linux on ChromeOS runs Linux apps; and remote access or app delivery runs the Windows software elsewhere. ChromeOS Flex is also not interchangeable with Chromebook ChromeOS for this purpose: Google says ChromeOS Flex does not support Windows virtual machines using Parallels Desktop. Google’s ChromeOS Flex comparison details that limitation.
