A live broadcast and a ticket are separate parts of the setup—the event carries the video, while the paid product controls access.
Choose a platform that supports paid access to a live event
Before building the event, confirm that your chosen service lets your account sell one-time access to a live broadcast. Check creator eligibility, audience geography, payout and refund terms, payment methods, customer login requirements, and whether replay access is included. These details vary by service and account; check the current terms for your exact plan and region.

Vimeo OTT provides a documented example of a live PPV workflow, but its account requirements differ across its product documentation. Its OTT live-stream creation page says live streaming requires an OTT Enterprise plan with live streaming enabled and a Premium, Advanced, or Enterprise Vimeo.com account. A separate general live-event FAQ describes Advanced or Premium or Enterprise with Events added. Confirm eligibility directly for the account and product you plan to use.
YouTube’s viewer help describes buying tickets to selected PPV events and says selected events can currently be purchased and watched in the US. It explains how viewers sign in, buy a ticket, and receive an email with a viewing link. That viewer-facing information does not establish that every creator can publish a PPV event or explain creator-side requirements; verify those separately before treating YouTube as an available sales option.

Set up the event and paid product
On Vimeo OTT, the documented sequence is to create the live event, create a transactional Buy/Rent product, attach the event in the product’s Content settings, and set the product to Ready for Sale when it should be purchasable.
- Confirm eligibility. Check that your account can create and sell a live PPV event, your intended customers can pay and watch, and you can receive payouts.
- Create the live event. Set its title, description, thumbnail, and stream method. Vimeo OTT supports an RTMP encoder using the event’s server URL and stream key, or a web-based studio option. Configure chat, Q&A, or polls if the platform offers them and they suit the event.
- Create the paid product and attach the event. In Vimeo OTT, create a transactional Buy/Rent product and select the live event in its Content tab. PPV cannot be enabled for Rentals. A preorder also does not switch automatically to Ready for Sale when the broadcast begins; release it manually when sales should open.
- Set the sales window and arrival experience. Decide when viewers can buy, what they should expect after purchase, and whether the platform will send a start notification. Vimeo recommends preview mode. If you send notifications, its guidance is to go live several minutes before the advertised start and show a “starting soon” slate while viewers arrive.
- Rehearse the whole customer journey. Test the incoming stream, product visibility, checkout, signed-in viewing, and replay behavior before promoting the event. Vimeo recommends testing early and often, rehearsing, and monitoring stream health.
- Choose archive settings before broadcast. Decide whether to keep an on-demand version, how long it will remain available, and whether it uses the same distribution rules as the live event. Vimeo says ending the broadcast starts VOD transcoding; once transcoded, the VOD replaces the live event in the Buy/Rent product unless you remove it.
Prepare the camera, encoder, and stream feed
The basic signal path is camera or other video source → encoder or web studio → platform event → ticket holder. Vimeo’s live-event FAQ calls for a reliable internet connection and a camera connected to a supported encoder. For its RTMP setup, copy the event’s server URL and stream key into an encoder; examples named in Vimeo’s guide include OBS, Wirecast, XSplit, and Livestream Studio.

A USB HDMI capture card is only a possible accessory if an HDMI camera or other HDMI source needs to feed a computer-based encoder. The cited Vimeo guidance does not make a capture card mandatory or guarantee compatibility. Check your camera’s output, computer inputs, and encoder requirements before buying one. A simple webcam production may need less equipment than a multi-camera setup; prioritize a stable connection and a rehearsal over gear without a defined purpose.
Decide what ticket holders receive after the live event
Set replay access deliberately rather than assuming that a ticket covers a particular replay period. Vimeo’s guidance says the broadcast begins transcoding into VOD after it ends, and the finished VOD replaces the live event in the Buy/Rent product unless removed. Vimeo allows live-event and VOD distribution settings to be configured separately; VOD distribution can use different subscription plans, collections, categories, products, or regions.

Vimeo recommends leaving the VOD available for at least 24 hours so ticket holders who had technical difficulties still have a chance to watch. The length of replay access is a creator decision to confirm in the platform’s controls and terms; the recommendation is not a universal PPV rule.
Compare the access model before you announce ticket sales

- Can creators sell a one-time ticket for a live broadcast, rather than only subscriptions or advertising-supported access?
- Which account tier and regions are eligible, and can your intended audience use the payment methods offered?
- How do preorder, product release, and event-start notifications work?
- Can customers watch in a browser, an app, or both, and what sign-in is required?
- Is replay included in the original purchase, how long is it available, and can its distribution rules differ from the live event?
- What are the current transaction fees, payout timing, refund rules, taxes, and support arrangements? Verify these in the provider’s current terms; they are not established by the Vimeo workflow described here.
Choose a monetization model that fits the event
Vimeo OTT describes several video monetization approaches: advertising-based video (AVOD), free video (FVOD), pay-per-view, transactional purchase or rental (TVOD), and subscriptions (SVOD). A one-off event may suit PPV; an ongoing library may suit subscriptions; a free broadcast may be useful for audience building. Availability is not universal: Vimeo’s guide says AVOD is Enterprise-only and requires Google Ad Manager, while some ad placements require Google Ad Manager 360. Check the exact service and account before choosing a model.
