Recommended Free Tools
For OBS itself, its Steam listing states 4 GB of RAM minimum and 8 GB recommended. Those are software-level requirements—not a guarantee that a PC can stream a particular game, record locally, or handle a complex scene smoothly. The right answer depends on the whole workload, and the available official guidance does not set a universal RAM target for each streaming setup.
What the OBS memory figures do—and do not—tell you
The OBS Studio Steam listing gives 4 GB RAM as the minimum and 8 GB as the recommended amount for its listed Windows and macOS requirements. The listing does not provide a workload-specific recommendation for streaming games or producing elaborate scenes. OBS’s own system requirements page does not specify a RAM capacity and cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” OBS Studio on Steam · OBS system requirements
So, 8 GB is the listing’s recommended baseline for OBS, not proof that 8 GB will be enough for every live stream. Likewise, the 4 GB minimum should not be read as a practical target for a demanding game-and-stream setup.
How your streaming workload changes the decision
There is no official RAM-by-workload chart in the cited guidance. Use your actual setup to decide whether the listing’s baseline is likely to be comfortable, rather than treating a particular capacity as a guaranteed prescription.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
- OBS alone or OBS with a game: A game adds another major workload. Check how the computer performs with both running, rather than judging from OBS’s minimum requirement alone.
- Streaming or streaming plus local recording: Recording while live adds work for the system. OBS warns that basic compatibility does not guarantee successful streaming or recording.
- Simple scenes or scenes with many sources and browser overlays: Scene complexity is one of the factors OBS identifies as affecting CPU requirements. Browser-based elements also make the real workload different from OBS alone.
- Encoding, resolution, and frame rate: OBS says CPU requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Twitch notes that x264 encoding can tax the CPU and that higher resolution and frame rate require more encoding power. These are reasons to assess the entire system; they do not establish a RAM number for any particular setup. OBS system requirements · Twitch broadcasting guidelines
Is 8 GB enough to stream and game at the same time?
The available official guidance does not answer that with a universal yes or no. Eight gigabytes is the OBS Steam listing’s recommended amount for the software’s listed requirements, but it is not a measured recommendation for gaming and streaming at once. The game, encoder, scene, resolution, frame rate, and whether you also record all affect the load; the cited sources do not provide memory measurements for those combinations.
If you are deciding whether to upgrade, evaluate the setup you actually intend to run: the game and OBS together, your usual scenes and overlays, and recording if you use it. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can suggest settings suited to your hardware, but the official requirements page does not present it as a way to determine a universal RAM capacity. - G.SKILL RipjawsV Series DDR4 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F4-3200C16D-16GVKB
- Non-ECC, DDR4 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and Intel XMP memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
Do not confuse system RAM with GPU memory
System RAM and graphics-card memory (VRAM) are separate resources. Twitch’s 1440p and dual-format guidance lists requirements involving software, GPU or drivers, display, bandwidth, and video tracks, but its surfaced requirements do not state a system RAM capacity. A GPU requirement in that guidance therefore cannot be used as a RAM recommendation. Twitch 2K streaming guidance · Twitch dual-format guidance
What to check before buying RAM
There is no universally suitable kit based on “live streaming” alone. Before buying, identify the computer or motherboard model and check its supported memory type, form factor, and capacity. Desktop DIMMs and laptop SO-DIMMs, as well as different memory generations, are not interchangeable; the OBS listing does not identify a kit for your PC.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your home computer does not have to stay on. Each slot streams uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not live camera broadcasts.
