If OBS stays on “Connecting” while you try to start a YouTube Live stream, check the stream selected in YouTube Studio and its key first, then work through OBS settings, upload capacity, and local network causes. The status alone does not identify one cause. Follow the checks below in order, changing one thing at a time so you can tell what helped.
1. Confirm the YouTube stream and stream key

Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and confirm that you have selected the intended stream. A stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. See YouTube’s guide to managing live stream settings.

If YouTube reports an encoder startup error, copy a new stream key from Live Control Room and update the matching key in OBS. A channel owner or manager can reset the key. Resetting it does not update OBS automatically, so the two must match. Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Keep the key private: it functions as a credential for sending a feed to your stream.

If you sign in to YouTube through third-party software instead of entering a stream key and receive a startup error, YouTube directs you to that software’s support team. The software may need a compatibility update.
2. Check OBS output before changing the network
Look at the video and audio preview in OBS, then check the YouTube live dashboard for encoder errors or stream-health messages. YouTube recommends inspecting the encoder output and CPU load; a local recording can also help you investigate what OBS is producing.

If the local preview or recording is wrong, investigate the source, encoder settings, or computer load first.

If local output looks healthy but YouTube does not receive it, focus on the outbound connection and OBS network configuration.

Do not treat encoding performance and network connection as the same problem. OBS has a separate encoding-performance troubleshooting guide for rendering and encoding load.

3. Review OBS connection settings
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, recommends testing network-related settings when a stream connection is unreliable. Change one setting at a time, and note the original value so you can undo an unsuccessful test.
Try another ingest server
In OBS, open Settings → Stream and, where the service configuration offers a server choice, test a different ingest server. This can help isolate a server-path issue; it is not a guaranteed fix.
Set bitrate to match stable upload capacity
In Settings → Output, review the streaming video bitrate. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point in its general dropped-frame troubleshooting. This is an OBS heuristic, not a YouTube-specific guaranteed setting. If you lower the bitrate, picture quality may also fall. Check upload capacity before settling on a value.
Check IP binding and Windows-only options

In OBS’s Settings → Advanced network options, leave Bind to IP at Default unless you have a reason to test another interface. OBS notes that IPv4 Only can be tested; if it makes no difference, return to the usual IPv4 and IPv6 setting.

OBS lists Network Optimizations and TCP Pacing as Windows-only options. Test them only if you are on Windows and can revert the changes; they are not universal fixes.

Dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce dropped frames when the connection is congested, but it is a fallback rather than a fix for the underlying cause. A lower bitrate means lower video quality.

4. Test upload capacity, not download speed
Run an internet speed test and pay attention to the upload result. A fast download result does not establish that your connection can send a live feed reliably. YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends spare capacity: “That’s primary + backup + 20% is recommended.” The 20% headroom recommendation is from YouTube Help’s “Streaming tips”; the retrieved page shows no publication year. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guide, streaming tips, and encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Compare your stable upload capacity with the combined bitrate of the primary feed and any backup feed, leaving the recommended margin. If upload is unstable or too limited, lower the stream bitrate to a level the connection can sustain and monitor YouTube’s stream health. If the speed test or connection indicates a service problem, contact your internet provider.
5. Isolate software and local-network problems
Test security, VPN, and network utilities carefully
OBS identifies firewall or antivirus interference, unstable VPN connections, network-prioritizing utilities, and outdated network drivers as possible causes. If you suspect one, test it individually rather than disabling several protections at once. If turning off security software resolves the issue, restore protection and create an appropriate OBS exception. Obtain network drivers from the computer or network-device manufacturer.
Test the connection and equipment
OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends testing a wired connection. If you are checking this path, try a known-good Ethernet cable. Restarting the modem and router can also help isolate a temporary network problem. Possible faulty components include the modem, router, cable, network card, switch, or extender.

These are conditional checks, not reasons to replace equipment pre-emptively. OBS recommends asking your ISP if you are unsure before replacing network hardware.

If the checks do not resolve the connection, contact your ISP with a detailed description, as OBS recommends. YouTube also advises reporting continuing live-stream problems. Include the following so support can distinguish an encoder issue from an outbound-path problem:

The exact OBS status or error and the relevant OBS log.

Whether the intended stream appears in YouTube Live Control Room and whether YouTube shows an encoder error.
