To turn War Mode on, your character must be level 20 or higher and be in Valdrakken or your faction’s major capital: Stormwind for the Alliance or Orgrimmar for the Horde. Press N to open Talents, then select the War Mode control at the bottom of the pane. To turn it off, go to any rest location, such as an inn, open Talents again, and deselect the icon.

What War Mode does

War Mode is World of Warcraft’s opt-in setting for open-world player-versus-player combat. Blizzard Support describes it as “the only way to participate in open-world PvP.” When the setting is on, your character is placed in the War Mode world and can interact in that mode with other players who also chose War Mode. When it is off, you remain in the non-War-Mode world instead. See Blizzard’s War Mode support article for the official description.

The setting is separate from the ordinary PvP flag associated with your character. The control you need is not on the character portrait or a general status menu; it is at the bottom of the Talents interface. Blizzard’s player guidance says the control appears there once a character reaches level 20: official level-20 guidance.

Requirements and where each action is allowed

Action Character requirement Permitted location Interface path
Enable War Mode Level 20 or higher Valdrakken, Stormwind, or Orgrimmar, as appropriate for your character Press N → Talents → War Mode control at the bottom
Disable War Mode War Mode currently enabled Any rest location, including an inn Press N → Talents → deselect the War Mode icon

These location rules explain why the same button behaves differently depending on where you are. You can enable the setting only from an eligible capital location, but you do not need to return to a capital to disable it. A rest location is sufficient for turning it off.

How to turn War Mode on

1. Confirm that the character is level 20

War Mode becomes available at level 20. If the character is level 19 or lower, the control will not be available for activation, even if you are standing in a capital city. Leveling to 20 is the prerequisite before troubleshooting the interface or your location.

2. Travel to an eligible capital

Go to one of the locations where activation is permitted:

  • Valdrakken
  • Stormwind for an Alliance character
  • Orgrimmar for a Horde character

You do not have to use Stormwind or Orgrimmar specifically. Valdrakken is also an eligible location under Blizzard’s current instructions. Conversely, being in an inn, a questing zone, or another ordinary outdoor area is not enough to enable War Mode.

3. Open the Talents interface

Press N to open Talents. If your keyboard or interface uses a custom key binding, use the binding assigned to Talents instead; the important point is to open the Talents pane rather than a character or PvP-status window.

4. Select the War Mode control

Look along the bottom of the Talents pane for the War Mode control. Select it to enable the setting. Blizzard identifies this bottom-of-pane control as the War Mode toggle for characters at level 20 and above.

5. Leave the capital after enabling

Once enabled, continue playing with the setting on. Outside cities, the game separates players according to their War Mode choice. You will therefore be placed with other War Mode players in the open world rather than with players who left War Mode off.

How to turn War Mode off

1. Go to a rest location

Travel to any rest location. An inn is the clearest example, but the rule is not limited to one named building or city. The requirement is that the character is in a location the game recognizes as restful.

2. Open Talents with N

Press N to open the Talents pane. The same interface used to enable War Mode contains the control for disabling it.

3. Deselect the War Mode icon

At the bottom of the Talents pane, select the War Mode control again so that it is no longer active. This turns War Mode off. You do not need to travel back to Valdrakken, Stormwind, or Orgrimmar to perform this action.

4. Resume normal open-world play

After disabling the setting, your character uses the non-War-Mode world outside cities. Players who kept War Mode on are placed in a different open-world instance, so you should not expect to encounter the same War Mode population while questing outdoors.

Why the War Mode toggle is missing or will not change

You are below level 20

The control is tied to the level-20 requirement. Check the character’s level before changing locations or resetting interface settings. A character below level 20 cannot activate War Mode.

You are trying to enable it outside an eligible capital

Activation is restricted to Valdrakken, Stormwind, or Orgrimmar. If you are in a leveling zone, a battlefield, a quest hub, or an inn outside one of those eligible capitals, the location requirement has not been met. Travel to the appropriate capital and open Talents there.

You are trying to disable it outside a rest location

Disabling has a different location rule. An outdoor area that is not recognized as a rest location will not satisfy the requirement, even though you can see the War Mode control in Talents. Enter an inn or another rest location, then try again.

You are checking the wrong interface

The ordinary PvP flag or a character portrait indicator is not the War Mode control. Press N and inspect the bottom of the Talents pane. Looking elsewhere can make the setting appear to be unavailable when the correct control is simply in another window.

You are in a city and see players with another setting

Seeing players who appear to have the opposite War Mode choice in a capital does not necessarily mean the toggle failed. Blizzard’s system allows cities to remain shared even though players are separated in the open world. A capital can therefore contain characters with different War Mode settings at the same time. The separation applies outside cities.

The interface does not reflect the change immediately

First verify the three conditions for the action you are attempting: level 20 or higher for activation, an eligible capital for activation, and a rest location for deactivation. Reopen Talents with N and check the control at the bottom of the pane. These checks distinguish a location or eligibility issue from simply viewing the wrong status window.

How the War Mode split affects your world

War Mode does not place every player into one universal PvP layer. Instead, the game uses the choice made by each character. Blizzard’s explanation of the system states that players choose whether to enter a world with other players who made the same choice, with War Mode-on and War Mode-off players separated outside cities: Battle for Azeroth: War Mode, PvP Talents, and More.

  • War Mode on: You can participate in open-world PvP and interact in that mode with other War Mode players.
  • War Mode off: You remain outside the War Mode world and do not use the War Mode route for open-world PvP.
  • In cities: The populations can be shared, so different settings may be visible together.
  • Outside cities: The game separates the two choices into different instances.

This is why a capital is suitable for changing the setting while also being an unreliable place to judge which mode another character has selected. The visible city population is not a definitive test of your outdoor instance.

Choosing whether to leave War Mode on

The practical choice is between access to open-world PvP and the conditions of the shared non-War-Mode world. The setting is opt-in, so you can change your decision when you reach the required location.

Consideration War Mode on War Mode off
Open-world PvP Available; Blizzard identifies War Mode as the route to participate in open-world PvP. Not available through War Mode.
Other players encountered outdoors Other players who also selected War Mode. Players using the non-War-Mode setting.
Interaction in the mode Can interact with other War Mode players while in the mode. Does not interact through the War Mode world.
Where you can change it Enable from Valdrakken or the appropriate faction capital. Disable from any rest location.
Travel convenience Requires reaching an eligible capital when you want to activate it. Can be turned off at a nearby rest location, so you do not need a capital.

Use War Mode when open-world PvP is the activity you want to add to outdoor play. Leave it off when you prefer to remain in the non-War-Mode world. If your preference changes, the activation and deactivation locations are different, so plan the next change around the nearest eligible capital or rest location.

Common situations and the correct response

“How do I turn War Mode on?”

Reach level 20, go to Valdrakken, Stormwind, or Orgrimmar, press N, and select the War Mode control at the bottom of Talents.

“Where is the War Mode toggle?”

It is at the bottom of the Talents interface. Press N to open that pane. It is not the ordinary PvP flag on the character portrait.

“Can I disable War Mode at an inn?”

Yes. An inn is a rest location, and disabling is permitted there. Open Talents and deselect the War Mode icon.

“Do I have to return to Stormwind or Orgrimmar?”

No. Activation can also be performed in Valdrakken. For deactivation, you do not need any of those capitals; any rest location is sufficient.

“Why do I see players with another War Mode setting in the capital?”

Cities can be shared by both settings. The meaningful separation occurs outside cities, where War Mode-on and War Mode-off players are placed in separate instances.

Fast checklist

  • Character is level 20 or higher.
  • For activation, you are in Valdrakken, Stormwind, or Orgrimmar.
  • For deactivation, you are in a rest location such as an inn.
  • You opened Talents with N.
  • You used the control at the bottom of the Talents pane, not the ordinary PvP flag.
  • You judged the result in the open world rather than by the mixed population visible in a capital.

Following those checks covers the eligibility, location, and interface requirements Blizzard documents for War Mode.
