There is no documented universal switch that enables every GST notice alert. Keep the email address and mobile number registered for the relevant GSTIN—especially those belonging to the primary authorised signatory—up to date, then monitor the GST Portal itself. Notices and reports issued by tax officials are available under Services > User Services > Additional Notices and Orders. Email and SMS should be treated as prompts to check that record, not as a replacement for logging in.
The steps below show how to verify your contact details, correct them through the applicable portal workflow, locate a notice, and troubleshoot missing messages without waiting for an alert that may not be sent for every event.

What “turn on GST Portal alerts” actually means
GST taxpayers often look for a notification setting that will send an email and SMS whenever a new notice is issued. The official GSTN material does not document one account-wide control that turns on every possible notice alert. Instead, the system has two related parts:
- Portal record: notices and reports issued by tax officials are placed in the GST Portal under Additional Notices and Orders.
- Event communication: for specified portal events, the system can send messages to the taxpayer’s registered email address and mobile number.
This distinction matters. A message is useful because it tells you to look, but the notice displayed after you sign in is where you see the available response, document-upload, payment, or other action. The GSTN functionality documentation states that “All notices and report issued by tax official will be available to taxpayers under ‘Additional Notices and Orders’.” That portal location is therefore the dependable place to verify whether action is required.
#1 Best Overall
GSTN material also describes email and SMS notifications for documented events. It does not establish that every notice in every workflow will always generate both channels, nor does it promise delivery within a particular number of minutes. You should not infer that a missing message means no notice exists.
Prepare the GSTIN account before expecting messages
Alerts can only reach the contact details recorded for the taxpayer. Before troubleshooting delivery, establish which GSTIN and signatory record you are checking.
Confirm the correct taxpayer account
- Use the credentials associated with the GSTIN for which you expect a notice.
- If you handle several registrations, check each GSTIN separately; a contact record or notice for one registration does not confirm the status of another.
- Identify the primary authorised signatory shown in the registration records, because GSTN registration guidance associates portal communications with that person’s registered email address and mobile number.
Check that both channels are usable
- Make sure the email account is active and that messages from GST-related services are not being routed automatically to spam, junk, quarantine, or a corporate filtering service.
- Confirm that the registered phone can receive SMS and that its inbox, network service, and any enterprise message filter are functioning.
- Use a current address and number that the authorised signatory can actually access. A former employee’s mailbox or an inactive number can leave the portal record correct in appearance but unusable in practice.
These checks do not activate a separate alert switch. They remove the most common delivery failures and make the registered details suitable for the event notifications that GSTN documents.

Use this sequence whenever you expect a notice, receive an alert, or are told that an action may have been issued against a GSTIN.
- Open the official GST Portal directly. Type the portal address yourself or use a trusted bookmark. Do not begin with an unexpected link in an email or text message.
- Sign in with the credentials for the relevant GSTIN. Ensure you are viewing the taxpayer registration that could have received the notice.
- Review the registered contact details. Check the email address and mobile number associated with the primary authorised signatory. If either is outdated, note that correction before relying on future messages.
- Open Services. From the signed-in taxpayer interface, choose User Services.
- Select Additional Notices and Orders. GSTN identifies this area as the location for notices and reports issued by tax officials.
- Open the relevant entry and read every available field. Check the notice type, date shown by the portal, reference information, response instructions, and any deadline or status displayed. The exact fields depend on the notice workflow.
- Use the action provided on the notice page. Where the portal offers a reply, document upload, payment, acknowledgment, or another response, complete it through that page and retain the confirmation presented by the portal.
- Record what you submitted. Save the acknowledgment, reference number, uploaded files, and submission date in your compliance records. This is an internal record-keeping step, not a substitute for following any additional instruction shown by the portal.
A notice that is already visible should be handled from the portal even if no email or SMS has arrived. Waiting for a second message can delay a response.
How to correct the registered email address or mobile number
If the details shown for the primary authorised signatory are wrong, use the GST Portal’s applicable amendment or profile workflow for that registration. GSTN’s non-core-field guidance describes changing the registered mobile number and email address through the amendment process and sending confirmation messages to the primary authorised signatory.

Use the workflow displayed for your account
Portal screens can differ by account status and by the portal release in use. For that reason, do not rely on an old screenshot or assume that a particular button appears in the same location for every taxpayer. After signing in, open the profile or amendment area offered for your account, choose the non-core contact fields when available, enter the current email address and mobile number, and complete the verification or submission steps the portal displays.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat to verify before submitting
- Enter the complete email address without typographical errors and confirm that the signatory can access it.
- Enter the mobile number in the format requested by the portal and ensure it can receive the verification or confirmation SMS.
- Check that you are amending the intended GSTIN rather than another registration under the same organisation.
- Review the amendment summary before final submission and save the acknowledgment or reference generated by the portal.
After the change
Look for the confirmation messages described in GSTN’s guidance and sign in again to verify that the new details are displayed. A confirmation message indicates that the change workflow produced a message; it is not proof that every future notice will use both email and SMS. Continue checking Additional Notices and Orders for the registration.
Where the notice is, and what you can do there
The portal’s Additional Notices and Orders area is more than an inbox. GSTN says taxpayers can view notices and reports issued by tax officials there and take the actions made available for the specific item. Depending on the workflow, those actions can include replying, uploading supporting documents, making a payment, acknowledging information, or completing another form.
Read the status before acting
Look for whether an item is new, awaiting a taxpayer response, already answered, or otherwise closed or updated. The labels and available controls are determined by the portal workflow. Do not assume that an email subject line, if one exists, contains the complete instruction.
Keep the submission evidence
Download or otherwise retain the acknowledgment and the files you submit, together with the reference shown by the portal. If the portal displays a further step after submission, complete that step rather than treating the upload itself as the end of the process.
Portal record versus email and SMS prompt
Both channels help, but they serve different purposes. Use the following comparison to decide what to rely on when the channels disagree.
| Criterion | GST Portal notice record | Email or SMS |
|---|---|---|
| Source of truth | The notice or report displayed under Services > User Services > Additional Notices and Orders. | A prompt sent to the contact details registered for the taxpayer and, in the documented event, the primary authorised signatory. |
| Actionability | Supports the reply, upload, payment, acknowledgment, or other action exposed for that notice. | Primarily signals that an event may need attention; the message itself may not contain all fields or controls. |
| Reliability | Does not depend on successful email or SMS delivery, provided you can sign in and the notice has been posted. | Depends on accurate registered details, an accessible mailbox or phone, network delivery, and the event being one for which GSTN sends a notification. |
| Security | Direct navigation to the official portal lets you inspect the record without trusting an unexpected message link. | Unexpected links or attachments can be misleading; use the message only as a reason to open the portal independently. |
The practical rule is simple: use messages for awareness and the signed-in portal for verification and action.
Why an expected email or SMS may not arrive
A missing message has several possible explanations. Work through these checks in order, without assuming that the absence of an alert means the absence of a notice.
1. The contact details are outdated
Compare the email address and mobile number displayed for the GSTIN with the details currently used by the primary authorised signatory. If they differ, complete the applicable amendment or profile process and retain its acknowledgment. A message sent to an old address or number will not appear in the current inbox or handset.
2. The message was filtered
Search the email account’s spam, junk, quarantine, archive, and rules folders. In an organisation, ask the mail administrator whether automated filtering held the message. On the phone, verify that SMS blocking, sender filtering, storage limits, roaming restrictions, or a corporate messaging policy did not prevent receipt.
3. You are checking the wrong GSTIN
Sign out and identify the registration connected with the business activity or tax period in question. Then sign in to that GSTIN and inspect its notice area. Shared credentials or multiple registrations can make a correct message appear to be missing when it was associated with another account.
4. The event is not one that sends both channels
GSTN’s published material describes notifications for specified portal events, not a universal promise for every notice type. There is no documented delivery-time guarantee that would justify waiting a fixed number of minutes or hours before checking the portal.

5. The notice is already in the portal
Go directly to Services > User Services > Additional Notices and Orders. If the item appears there, follow its displayed response or upload process immediately and keep the portal acknowledgment. Do not postpone action while trying to obtain a separate email or SMS.

6. The portal information itself is unclear
Capture the notice reference, the status shown, and the exact action or error message. Use the support route provided by the official GST Portal for account-specific assistance, and describe the GSTIN, user role, and screen on which the problem occurs. Avoid sending credentials, one-time passwords, or full login details to anyone offering help through an unsolicited message.

Open the portal independently
Even when an email or SMS appears genuine, do not use its embedded link as your login route. Enter the official portal address yourself or use a bookmark you created previously. Check the browser address and the sign-in page before entering credentials.
Match the message to the portal entry
Compare the notice reference and taxpayer registration shown in the message with the item displayed after you sign in. A mismatch is a reason to stop and verify through the portal’s official support channels.
Protect authentication information
Never disclose a password, one-time password, or authentication code in response to an email, SMS, phone call, or chat. GST compliance actions should be completed inside the signed-in portal, where the available controls and confirmation are visible.

Do not open an unexpected attachment merely because it claims to be a notice. First look for the corresponding entry in Additional Notices and Orders. The portal record is the safer place to determine what document or response is actually required.
A practical monitoring routine for businesses and tax professionals
Because no universal alert toggle or delivery guarantee is documented, build monitoring around the portal rather than around a message inbox.
- Assign an owner for each GSTIN. That person should know which primary authorised signatory and contact details are recorded.
- Set a regular sign-in schedule appropriate to your filing workload. The schedule is an internal control; GSTN does not prescribe a universal interval in the material described here.
- Check the notice area during important filing, refund, registration, or assessment activity. A message may be delayed, filtered, or unavailable for a particular event.
- Review contact details whenever staff, phone numbers, or mailboxes change. Complete the applicable amendment or profile workflow instead of relying on forwarding from a former contact.
- Keep an evidence trail. Store portal acknowledgments, uploaded documents, and internal notes about who reviewed each notice.
- Escalate promptly when the portal shows an action. Route the item to the responsible tax or finance professional and follow the status and instructions shown on the notice.
This routine separates awareness from proof: a message can start the review, but the portal entry and its submission acknowledgment document what the taxpayer actually saw and did.
Common assumptions that cause missed notices
“If there is no SMS, there is no notice.”
Incorrect. The portal is the documented location for notices and reports, while SMS is an event-dependent communication channel.
Recommended Free Tools
“Updating my email enables every alert.”
Incorrect. Updating the registered contact details makes future communications reachable; it does not create a documented, account-wide switch for every notice category.
“An email is the complete legal instruction.”
Do not treat a message as a substitute for reading the notice record and the actions displayed after login. The portal may contain fields, files, or response controls that are not reproduced in an email or SMS.
“A fixed delivery time lets me wait before checking.”
No fixed delivery-time guarantee is provided in the official material described here. Check the portal when the matter is important instead of waiting for a timer to expire.
“The same contact details apply to every registration.”
Do not assume that. Verify the record for the specific GSTIN involved, particularly when an organisation has multiple registrations or signatories.
