Chrome, Edge, and Firefox generally update automatically on desktop, but the controls depend on the browser, operating system, and how it was installed. Check the browser’s update settings, enable any available automatic-update option, and restart when prompted to finish installing a downloaded update. On managed computers or app-store and Linux-package installations, updates may be controlled elsewhere.
Turn on automatic updates in Google Chrome

Open Chrome and select More (three dots) > Help > About Google Chrome.

Let Chrome check for updates. Google says Chrome checks regularly and normally applies an available update after you close and reopen the browser. If Chrome shows Relaunch to Update, select it to restart and complete the update.

On macOS, the About page may offer Automatically update Chrome for all users if Chrome is installed in the Applications folder. On Linux, updates are handled through the distribution’s package manager; on a Chromebook, update ChromeOS. See Google’s Chrome update instructions.

On an organization-managed Windows computer, an administrator can control Chrome updates through Google Update policy. If update controls are unavailable, contact your organization’s IT administrator; Google notes that disabling updates prevents automatic security fixes and patches. Details are in Google’s Chrome update management guidance.
Turn on automatic updates in Microsoft Edge

Open Settings and more > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge, or type edge://settings/help in the address bar.

Let Edge check for updates. If the option is available, turn on Download and install updates automatically.

To allow downloads over cellular or another metered connection, you can also turn on Download updates over metered connections. This may incur data charges.

Restart Edge when prompted so it can apply the update.
On Windows, Edge updates may also be delivered through Windows Update. On work or school devices, an organization can manage Edge settings, leaving the update toggles unavailable. See Microsoft’s Edge update settings and Microsoft’s explanation of Edge update delivery.

Turn on automatic updates in Mozilla Firefox

Open Menu > Settings > General and scroll to Firefox Updates.

In the Installation section on Windows, select Automatically install updates (recommended).

To allow Firefox to update while it is closed, also select When Firefox is not running, if that option is available.

If Firefox has downloaded an update, restart the browser to apply it. The About Firefox panel can also check for and download updates.
Mozilla says the Windows background task checks every seven hours while Firefox is not in use. Its availability depends on the installation and system setup: it requires a supported installer-based installation, a usable Mozilla Maintenance Service, a default profile that has been run at least once, no language pack, and system-proxy connection settings. If the background option is missing, Firefox may not meet those conditions. See Mozilla’s background update instructions for Windows and Mozilla’s general Firefox update guide.
When the browser’s update setting is missing
The browser’s installation source can determine who handles updates. Firefox installed from the Microsoft Store updates through the Store; Firefox installed through a Linux distribution’s package manager updates through that distribution’s software-update tools. Mozilla documents these Firefox exceptions.

Work or school computer: Ask the organization’s IT administrator whether browser updates are managed by policy.

Linux installation: Use the distribution’s package manager or software updater for browser packages it provides.

Chromebook: Update ChromeOS rather than looking for desktop Chrome’s update controls.

Update downloaded but not installed: Restart the browser when prompted.
These steps cover desktop Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. They do not establish the update paths for Safari or for Chrome and Firefox on iPhone, iPad, or Android; those platforms use different update controls.
