Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You cannot reliably prove that an image, audio clip, or video was AI-generated just by looking or listening. Start with any platform disclosure and the file’s provenance or supported watermark signals, then check the original source and corroborate the claim independently. Treat visual oddities, detector scores, and missing signals as clues—not verdicts about whether a scene or claim is true.
Start with disclosures and provenance
Check the post and platform labels
Look for an AI disclosure on the post, in its surrounding context, or in the platform’s viewing interface. Labels can help identify material, but their presence depends on platform policy and disclosure or detection practices. Ofcom describes approaches including persistent labels, labels revealed after viewing, and interstitial notices during a clip; each has different implications for whether viewers notice it. Ofcom’s attribution toolkit explains these approaches.

Look for Content Credentials
When available, Content Credentials can record declared origin and edit history—for example, whether media was generated, AI-enhanced, captured by a device, or human-edited. Some credentials can describe actions or regions affected. They are signed, machine-readable provenance records, not certificates that a caption is accurate or that the depicted event happened. The C2PA implementation guide explains how Content Credentials work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA credential may be missing because the file was transformed or shared in a way that removed metadata, or because the media predates provenance signals. Its absence does not establish that a file is synthetic or authentic.

Use verification tools only for the signals they support
OpenAI Verify
OpenAI Verify checks uploaded images and audio for supported OpenAI-associated provenance signals, including C2PA metadata and SynthID. OpenAI recommends submitting one file at a time, avoiding image crops or conversion, and using audio clips 10–60 seconds long. The tool does not assess whether the media’s claim or context is accurate.
OpenAI’s Content Provenance API documentation describes a related check for supported OpenAI signals: C2PA applies to images, while SynthID applies to images and audio. The documentation explicitly says the API is not a general-purpose AI detector.

Google verification
On May 19, 2026, Google announced that SynthID verification for image, video, and audio had been added to Gemini and was expanding to Search and Chrome. It also described C2PA verification rolling out first in Gemini, then Search and Chrome. Those were rollout statements, so check Google’s current service information to confirm where each check is available. Google reported more than 100 billion images and videos and 60,000 years of audio watermarked with SynthID, as well as 50 million uses of Gemini verification. Those are deployment and usage figures reported by Google—not detection-accuracy measurements. Google’s announcement describes the rollout and figures.
Interpret a negative result cautiously
A result that finds no supported signal means only that the tool did not find a signal it can verify in that file. Metadata may have been stripped; a watermark may have been degraded; the media may predate the signal; or the generator may not be covered. OpenAI specifically notes that a negative result does not rule out generation by OpenAI or another provider. A positive signal is also limited: it can support a claim about recorded provenance or a particular watermark, not the truth of the scene, caption, or speaker’s intent.

Know what different detection methods can tell you
There is no universal detector that establishes whether every kind of media is AI-generated. Methods answer different questions and cover different sources, file types, and transformations.
| Method | What it can support | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Content provenance or Content Credentials | A record of declared origin and edits, when a valid credential is present. | It does not verify factual accuracy, and transformations may remove metadata. |
| Watermark verification, such as SynthID | Whether a compatible tool finds a supported watermark signal. | Coverage depends on the watermark ecosystem and signal resilience; a negative result is not proof of no AI. |
| Fingerprinting | Whether media matches a known or related item, which can help identify reused material. | A match does not by itself establish whether the original was AI-generated. |
| AI-content classifiers | An estimate of whether input resembles content covered by the classifier’s design or training. | Ask which generators and media types it supports, how it reports uncertainty, and which transformations it has been evaluated against. A score alone is not proof. |
The European Commission’s May 8, 2026 study summary covers marking and detection across audio and image/video, including effectiveness, limitations, and practical applicability. Microsoft Research likewise distinguishes secure provenance, imperceptible watermarking, and soft-hash fingerprinting. Compare methods by coverage, resilience to transformation, specificity, and the evidence returned—not by an unsupported universal accuracy ranking.
Quick Recap
Check the source and claim independently
- Find the earliest available source. Trace the image, recording, or video back from reposts to the original account, publication, or recording where possible. A widely shared copy may have lost context or metadata.
- Look for independent corroboration. Check whether reliable reporting or other independent records support the event, date, location, and people shown. Reposts that all trace back to one source are not independent confirmation.
- Compare available versions. Check whether details stay consistent across video frames, audio, captions, and other documented versions. Visible or audible anomalies can prompt further checking, but are not a reliable standalone test of AI generation.
- Match the conclusion to the evidence. A provenance record may tell you about recorded origin or edits; a watermark check may identify a supported signal; a fingerprint may reveal reuse. None alone proves that the accompanying claim is true.
- Escalate consequential cases. If the material could prompt a serious accusation or cause harm, seek reliable newsroom coverage or a qualified forensic specialist. Do not make a serious accusation from one artifact or an automated score alone. OpenAI’s Verify guidance also distinguishes signal checks from evaluating accuracy and context.
