Find what is using disk space before deciding what to remove. Windows and macOS both provide built-in storage views for reviewing large files and folders; a size ranking helps you prioritize, but it does not tell you whether a file is safe to delete. Identify each item first, and move personal files you want to keep rather than removing them.
Start with a storage overview, then inspect individual items
- Measure: Open your computer’s built-in storage overview and check which broad categories use the most space.
- Inspect: Open the relevant category or folder and sort its contents by size where that option is available. A large item is a candidate for review, not proof that it is unnecessary.
- Identify: Check the item’s name, location, file type and associated app or owner. If you cannot establish what it is for, leave it in place until you can identify it or get knowledgeable help.
- Choose an action: Keep important files, move infrequently used personal files to suitable external storage, or remove only items you have decided you no longer need.
- Check the consequence: Before confirming cleanup, read what will be removed and whether it affects recovery options. Items moved to the Recycle Bin or Mac Bin do not free storage until the bin is emptied.

Review Storage and Cleanup recommendations
Open Settings > System > Storage, then review Cleanup recommendations. Windows may show categories such as Temporary files, Large or unused files, Files synced to the cloud, and Unused apps, along with the space suggested removals would save. Review each category and select only items you have decided to remove; the suggested list is not a command to delete everything in it. See Microsoft’s Windows storage guidance.

Sort personal files by size
For files you recognize, check common locations such as Videos, Music, Pictures and Downloads in File Explorer. Switch to Details view and sort by the Size column to bring the largest items into view. Microsoft’s guidance also describes selecting View from the taskbar and then Details to see file sizes in a folder.

Check that the storage device has enough capacity and works with your computer. Keep a separate backup of important files: a single external drive is not, by itself, a complete backup plan.

Understand the Windows.old trade-off
If Cleanup recommendations includes the previous Windows installation in Windows.old, treat it as a recovery choice, not routine clutter. Microsoft warns that deleting it removes the option to return to the previous Windows version and cannot be undone. Confirm that you are willing to give up that rollback option before removing it.
Find large files and folders in macOS
Review Storage and use its file views
On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. Select categories that offer more information to review their contents. Depending on the category and what is on your Mac, you may be able to inspect large files and downloads, sort items by name, kind, last accessed or size, and use File Browser to see storage used by folders. The categories and available details vary with the apps and files on the Mac. Apple’s guide to finding and deleting files describes these views.

On earlier macOS versions, Apple’s storage guidance points to Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage. Available screens and labels can differ by version; Apple’s free-space guide covers the version distinction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not treat System Data as a deletion list
System Data—called Other in some macOS versions—is a broad classification for Apple and third-party files that do not fit a more specific storage category. The label alone does not identify particular files or establish that they are safe to remove. Use the available file views to identify specific items rather than trying to clear the category wholesale.

When an extra disk-usage view may help
If you want a visual map in addition to the built-in storage tools, SquirrelDisk describes a sunburst view and availability for macOS, Windows and Linux on its product page. Treat any visualizer as a way to discover where space is used, not as a safety check: a large folder or file still needs to be identified before you remove it.

Deleting a file may not immediately release its storage. In Windows, space is not fully freed until you empty the Recycle Bin; on Mac, a file moved to the Bin continues to use storage until the Bin is emptied. Emptying either bin makes the removed items harder to recover, so do it only after checking that you no longer need them.
