These steps disable the device-unlock passcode; they do not remove a Screen Time passcode.
Turn off a known iPad passcode
- Open Settings.
- Tap Face ID & Passcode, Touch ID & Passcode, or Passcode, depending on the model.
- Enter the current device passcode if asked.
- Tap Turn Passcode Off, then confirm by following the prompts and entering the passcode when requested.
Apple documents this process in its iPad User Guide: Set a passcode on iPad. The steps require knowing the current passcode and being able to unlock the iPad.

What changes when you turn it off
With the device passcode disabled, anyone with access to the iPad can use it without first entering that passcode. Apple says setting a passcode turns on data protection and recommends one to secure iPad when it is turned on or woken. Turning the passcode off removes that protection layer; Face ID or Touch ID does not fully replace a passcode in every situation. See Apple’s passcode guidance for the security details.

If you forgot the device passcode
You cannot use the normal Settings steps without the current passcode. Apple’s recovery methods erase the iPad, including its data and settings; they are not ways to disable the passcode while preserving the device’s contents.

Reset on the iPad, if available
Apple supports an on-device reset for eligible iPadOS versions when required conditions are met, including that Find My was enabled, the iPad has a network connection, and you know the Apple Account password. The reset erases the device. Afterward, set it up again and restore from a backup if one is available. Check Apple’s current forgotten-passcode instructions for eligibility and steps.
Restore with a computer
If on-device reset is unavailable, Apple’s computer procedure uses a Mac or Windows PC, an internet connection, and a cable capable of connecting and charging the iPad. You put the iPad into recovery mode and restore it, which deletes its data and settings before setup. Follow Apple’s instructions for restoring an iPad when its passcode is forgotten; exact steps depend on the iPad model.

Turn off a Screen Time passcode instead
A Screen Time passcode controls Screen Time settings; it is separate from the passcode used to unlock the iPad. To remove it, open Settings > Screen Time > Change Screen Time Passcode > Turn Off Screen Time Passcode, then enter the current Screen Time passcode. Apple’s Screen Time passcode guide covers this separate setting.
