To stop the light during an iPhone video, first work out which light is on. If the Camera app’s video flash is firing, open Camera, select Video, open Camera Controls, tap Flash, and choose Flash Off. If the light is the separate flashlight (torch), open Control Center and tap the flashlight button. The two controls look similar on screen but live in different places, so the steps below treat them separately.
Identify which light is on
iPhones use the same LED for two different features. The Camera app’s flash is a camera setting that fires when the camera decides it needs light. The flashlight is a system feature that stays on until you switch it off. Apple’s support documentation describes them separately, which is why the fix depends on which one you are seeing.

Turn off the Camera app’s video flash
Apple’s camera-tools guide describes Flash as a camera setting. To switch it off while recording video:
- Open the Camera app and select Video.
- Open Camera Controls, or swipe up from the camera mode selector.
- Tap Flash.
- Choose Flash Off.
Choosing Off stops the camera from selecting flash automatically in low light, which is what Auto does. The exact control layout can vary by iPhone model and iOS version.

Keep the Flash control visible on the camera screen
If you change the flash often, you can make the control persistent. Go to Settings > Camera > Indicators and turn on Flash. The flash indicator then appears on the camera screen, so you can check and change it without opening Camera Controls each time.
Turn off the flashlight while recording
If the light is the system flashlight, it does not depend on the Camera app’s settings. Apple’s flashlight instructions say to tap the Control Center flashlight button again to turn it off. Apple also documents these other ways to control it:

- Control Center: open Control Center and tap the flashlight button. Tap it again to turn the light off.
- Siri: ask Siri to turn the flashlight off.
- Lock Screen: use the flashlight control on the Lock Screen.
- Action button: on supported models, Apple says the Action button can be assigned to the flashlight. Whether this is available depends on your model and how the button is configured.
Confirm the flashlight is off, not just the flash
After you change the setting, check the source. A flashlight that stays lit after you have set Camera’s flash to Off is a system flashlight, and it needs to be turned off in one of the flashlight methods above.

Apple’s documentation does not establish whether you can open Control Center, switch off the flashlight, and keep the native Camera recording running without interruption across all iPhone models and iOS versions. Apple’s video-recording settings page covers options such as HDR and Auto FPS, but it does not describe this flashlight behavior. Apple’s guide to video recording explains start and stop controls. Treat the flashlight-during-recording case as something to test on your own device before relying on it for an important recording.

Optional third-party app
An App Store listing for Flashlight Video Camera says it includes a control to turn the flashlight on or off while recording. The listing states that its information has not been verified by Apple. It is a third-party option, not a built-in one, and its current availability and suitability for your device should be checked on the App Store before you install it.

Apple’s support article on the flashlight explains the dual role of the LED: “The LED flash on your iPhone or iPad Pro doubles as a torch, so you can get extra light when you need it.” The statement is from Apple Support and does not name an individual author.
