You can reduce the amount of rendering through Esc → Video, and some modes expose a selective Hide Eye Candy option. Those controls can lower visual load or remove a particular environmental effect, but they do not promise default champion models or default ability particles.
For the broadest supported reduction, enter a match, press Esc, open Video, set Effects Quality to Very Low, and then adjust the other video and interface options that match your problem. If you are troubleshooting crashes or instability, test the change in a custom game with bots or by yourself before returning to a normal match.

The supported way to reduce skins and cosmetic effects
Use the in-game settings rather than trying to replace game files. The controls Riot documents are rendering and interface controls, not a universal skin-replacement system. The exact options visible can vary by client version, game mode, and the issue you are trying to solve.
- Enter a match. The relevant options are available from the in-game menu rather than only from the desktop launcher.
- Press Esc to open the options menu.
- Choose Video.
- Lower Effects Quality. Riot’s troubleshooting guidance starts at Very Low when the goal is to reduce rendering load. This changes how effects are rendered; it does not convert a champion to the base skin.
- Adjust the other video controls if necessary. Character Quality, Environment Quality, Shadows, the frame-rate cap, V-Sync, and anti-aliasing are also available rendering controls listed in Riot’s support guidance.
- Apply the change and test it. If the purpose is to address crashes, freezes, or instability, use a custom game with bots or a game played by yourself first. That gives you a low-risk place to check whether the change helped.
Start with one change, especially when diagnosing a technical problem. Changing every option at once makes it harder to identify which setting affected performance or visibility. Once you know which control helps, you can decide whether the visual trade-off is acceptable.

What each setting actually does
The following distinction matters because “turn off skins” can mean several different things: fewer particles, less environmental decoration, a cleaner interface, or a complete return to base champion visuals. Riot’s documented controls cover the first three only in limited ways.
| Control | Scope | Visual result | Gameplay impact | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Effects Quality | Broad rendering of visual effects | Lower effect quality and visual load; does not promise base-skin models or particles | Can help reduce rendering demand or visual distraction | General Video settings |
| Character Quality | Champion and character rendering | Reduces character-rendering quality rather than selecting a different skin | May help when character rendering contributes to load | General Video settings |
| Environment Quality | Map and environmental rendering | Reduces environmental detail | Can reduce scene complexity | General Video settings |
| Shadows | Lighting and shadow rendering | Reduces or removes rendered shadows, depending on the selected level | Can reduce visual clutter and rendering work | General Video settings |
| Frame-rate cap | Maximum rendered frames per second | Limits frame output instead of removing a cosmetic | Can make frame delivery more consistent on a system that is working too hard | General Video settings |
| V-Sync | Synchronization between frame output and display refresh | Changes presentation timing, not skin assets | May affect perceived smoothness and latency | General Video settings |
| Anti-aliasing | Edge smoothing | Changes edge treatment on rendered objects | Can reduce rendering work when lowered or disabled | General Video settings |
| Hide Eye Candy | Selected environmental or mode-specific visuals | Removes the particular effect covered by that mode’s implementation | Can reduce distraction or address a specific visual aversion | Only where the client or game mode exposes it |
| HUD animations | Interface motion | Reduces animated interface elements | Can make the interface less distracting | Interface options where available |
| Line missile display | Interface display of line missiles | Reduces that display overlay | Can simplify the combat view | Interface options where available |
| Attack range display | Attack-range visualization | Hides the range indicator when disabled | Reduces on-screen overlays | Interface options where available |
| Target frame on attack | Target-frame interface behavior | Stops the target frame from appearing on attack when disabled | Reduces interface movement | Interface options where available |
None of these entries is a documented “use base skins everywhere” command. They change rendering, map detail, timing, or interface presentation. If a cosmetic is part of a champion’s model or ability asset, reducing quality may leave the cosmetic identifiable while making it less detailed.
How to use Hide Eye Candy
Hide Eye Candy is selective, not global. It is a mode-specific or environmental toggle when the client exposes it. Riot’s Patch 25.05 notes give a concrete Arena example: enabling the arachnophobia option removes spiders, Elise’s spider form when a player is cocooned, and related spider visuals. That is a defined set of spider-related effects, not a promise to remove every skin, chroma, recall animation, ability particle, or kill effect.

When the option is useful
- Use it when a particular mode offers a toggle for an environmental effect you want to avoid.
- Use it for a narrowly defined visual trigger, such as the spider visuals described in the Arena example.
- Do not expect it to change the champion identity, model, voice, ability color, or cosmetic theme outside the effect covered by that mode.
What to do if you cannot find it
If Hide Eye Candy is not shown in your current mode or client, there may be no implementation for that mode. The absence of the toggle does not indicate a failed installation, and enabling Effects Quality at Very Low does not create a substitute for it. Use the general Video and interface controls instead.

Why lowering Effects Quality does not restore default particles
Effects Quality controls how effects are rendered and how much visual work the game performs. It is not a skin selector. A skin can alter the champion model, ability colors, particles, sounds, animations, and other assets, and a quality setting does not promise to swap those assets for the base champion’s versions.
Riot has explicitly described how a skin’s visual identity can be built into abilities. In Ask Riot: Assassins and Chromas (2018), Riot Games wrote: “With the PROJECT skin lines—PROJECT: Leona for example—the yellow extends past her shield and sword; it’s also integrated into her autottacks and abilities.” When a color or effect is integrated into an ability, lowering quality can change rendering detail without eliminating the underlying skin treatment.
This is why a champion may still look like the purchased or selected skin after you lower Effects Quality. You may see fewer details, softer edges, simpler shadows, or less demanding particles, but the game is not required to load the base-skin versions of those assets.

What “turn off skins” can and cannot mean
Replacing every champion with the base appearance
There is no documented universal player setting for this. Riot’s engineering material discusses internal per-skin and global rendering toggles used to handle bugs, but presents those as development controls rather than settings exposed for ordinary players. The supported in-game workflow does not include a master switch that forces every champion, ally, enemy, and cosmetic animation to use base assets.

Disabling only skin particles
No documented general control selectively restores default particles while leaving the rest of a skin active. Effects Quality can reduce the quality or load of rendered effects, but it does not guarantee default particles for every champion. Hide Eye Candy can remove a defined effect in a mode that supports the option, but it is not a particle replacement tool.
Hiding flashy environmental effects
This is the situation for which Hide Eye Candy is most directly relevant. If your mode provides a toggle for the effect you want to avoid, enable it. Its scope is limited to the implementation described by that mode; do not generalize the Arena spider behavior to all cosmetics.
Reducing interface motion
If the problem is motion around the battlefield or in the HUD rather than a champion skin, disable HUD animations and consider turning off line missile display, attack range display, and target-frame-on-attack. These are interface reductions, so they address overlays and motion rather than the underlying champion assets.

If your priority is low FPS or high rendering load
- Open Esc → Video during a match.
- Set Effects Quality to Very Low, following Riot’s troubleshooting starting point.
- If the scene remains demanding, lower Character Quality, Environment Quality, and Shadows as needed.
- Review the frame-rate cap, V-Sync, and anti-aliasing settings. These affect frame delivery and rendering work, but none of them disables a skin.
- Test in a custom game with bots or by yourself before using the new combination in a competitive match.
Riot does not publish a universal FPS percentage or guarantee for these settings. The result depends on the computer, display, resolution, drivers, background applications, and the particular scene, so treat the controls as troubleshooting levers rather than a promised performance figure.

If your priority is less visual distraction
- Lower Effects Quality first so dense spell effects are rendered with less detail.
- Disable HUD animations if the motion is coming from the interface.
- Turn off line missile display, attack range display, or target-frame-on-attack when those overlays are the distraction.
- Use Hide Eye Candy when the current game mode exposes a toggle that matches the effect you want removed.
This combination can make the screen calmer without pretending that all champion skins have been removed. Keep any indicator you rely on for positioning or combat decisions; an interface reduction is useful only if it does not remove information you need.
If you are avoiding a specific visual trigger
Look first for a mode-specific Hide Eye Candy option. The documented Arena arachnophobia example is designed for a defined spider-related trigger. If the effect is a champion’s skin, ability, recall, or other cosmetic that is not included in that mode’s toggle, the general settings cannot guarantee its removal.
If the game is crashing or unstable
- Make one rendering change at a time, beginning with Effects Quality at Very Low.
- Use the other Riot-documented Video controls only as needed.
- Run a custom game with bots or by yourself to verify stability.
- Only after the test is stable should you use the settings in a normal match.
A lower setting can reduce rendering demand, but it does not establish the cause of a crash and does not guarantee that every system will improve. If the problem persists, record which settings were changed so you can return to a known configuration while seeking technical support.
Common results and the correct interpretation
“I set Effects Quality to Very Low, but the champion still has the skin.”
That is expected. Very Low changes effect rendering quality and load; it is not a base-skin replacement. The model, colors, and ability identity can remain recognizable because those elements belong to the skin’s assets.
Best Value
“Hide Eye Candy is enabled, but I still see cosmetics.”
Hide Eye Candy removes only the effect covered by the current implementation. Riot’s Arena example concerns spiders and related spider visuals. It does not define a global rule for champion skins, chromas, particles, or animations.
“I cannot find Hide Eye Candy.”
The option is not a universal Video setting. It appears only when the client or mode exposes that behavior. Use the general Video and interface controls if it is absent.
“Lowering every setting did not make the skin disappear.”
Quality reductions can simplify rendering but do not replace the underlying asset. If your goal is to stop seeing a cosmetic entirely, the supported settings do not provide a documented universal solution.

Unofficial skin-swapping and file-modification tools are outside Riot’s documented settings workflow. They can create support or account risks, and the available evidence does not establish a particular enforcement outcome for every tool. The safest supported path is to use the in-game controls described above rather than modify client files.
A practical decision checklist
- Need lower rendering demand? Use Esc → Video and lower Effects Quality, then consider Character Quality, Environment Quality, Shadows, frame-rate cap, V-Sync, and anti-aliasing.
- Need fewer interface overlays? Disable HUD animations, line missile display, attack range display, or target-frame-on-attack as appropriate.
- Need one environmental effect removed? Look for Hide Eye Candy in the relevant game mode and check what that mode’s description says it controls.
- Need every skin converted to base visuals? There is no documented universal player-facing switch for that result.
- Testing a crash fix? Verify the new configuration in a custom game with bots or by yourself before returning to a normal match.
Bottom line for default visuals
You can reduce League of Legends’ visual load and selectively hide certain mode-specific effects, but you cannot rely on a documented universal setting to turn every skin and cosmetic effect into the default champion version. Start with Esc → Video → Effects Quality → Very Low, use the narrower interface and mode controls for the specific distraction, and test technical changes safely in a custom game. If a skin remains visible after those adjustments, that is a limitation of the supported controls rather than a sign that the setting failed.
