How to Turn Off Roku TV’s ACR Setting for a More Private Viewing Experience

Roku TV’s ACR setting can recognize content viewed through streaming, antenna, or connected devices. Here’s where to turn it off and what the change means for past data, ads, and recommendations.

The Roku TV setting to check is Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), found under Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience. Turning it off opts out of this specific content-recognition feature; it does not erase information Roku says was collected while ACR was on, or disable every form of data collection, advertising, or personalization.

What Roku’s ACR setting does

Roku Support describes Automatic Content Recognition as a feature that creates an encrypted fingerprint from screen pixels and matches it against a content catalog. It can identify movies, shows, games, or ads viewed through streaming, an antenna, or other connected devices. That means the feature is not limited to content played through a Roku streaming app.

Roku says ACR is not enabled out of the box, so check the setting on your own device rather than assume it is active. If it is on, disabling it reduces this particular recognition and collection while it remains off; it is not a blanket privacy switch.

How to turn off ACR on a Roku TV

  1. Press Home on your Roku remote.
  2. Open Settings from the left-hand menu.
  3. Go to Privacy > Smart TV Experience.
  4. Highlight Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) and press OK to turn it off.

Roku says pressing OK again enables the setting. Menu labels may vary by model or software version, so follow the options displayed on your TV. Roku also documents a route through Privacy Settings at my.roku.com: its online instructions say to toggle the setting twice until it returns to NO. The on-device path is the clearest way to confirm the current state on your TV. Roku says the Roku Mobile App can also be used as a remote.

What switching ACR off does—and does not do

It does not remove previously collected information

Roku says information collected or used while ACR was enabled is retained after you disable it. The support guidance does not specify a retention period or describe a deletion request for that data. Treat the switch as an opt-out going forward, not a way to erase viewing information already collected.

It does not turn off every kind of advertising

ACR is separate from Roku’s sensitive-ad-category controls. Those controls restrict some non-video display ads in Roku menus and screensavers; Roku says they do not cover video ads, ads in partner apps, or certain ads shown to all users. See Roku’s ad-preference guidance for that separate setting.

It may not stop recommendations or all personalization

Roku says its Home Screen can adapt to viewing, saved items, and ratings, and that recommendations use viewing history. The support information does not specify exactly how disabling ACR affects those recommendations. Do not assume the ACR switch turns off all personalization. Roku’s explanation of Home Screen changes is available in its Home Screen support article.

One feature with a stated U.S. limitation

Roku says More Ways to Watch is currently supported only in the United States and requires Smart TV Experience/ACR. This is a limitation for that particular feature, not a statement that Roku’s other privacy controls are U.S.-only.
