Use Paste Insert (Ctrl+Shift+V) to move later events and make room, or Paste Event Attributes to transfer settings without duplicating the clip.
VEGAS documentation calls timeline clips “events.” The basic copy-and-paste steps below are documented in VEGAS Pro 23 Help; the current product page promotes VEGAS Pro 2026, so menu details and shortcuts may vary by release.

How to copy and paste a timeline event
- Select the event or events: Click the timeline clip you want to copy. To copy more than one, select the additional events as well.
- Copy: Choose Edit > Copy or press Ctrl+C.
- Set the destination: Click the timeline at the position where the duplicate should begin. This sets the cursor position and selects a track.
- Paste: Choose Edit > Paste or press Ctrl+V.
The pasted event begins at the cursor. Ordinary Paste can place it over material already on the timeline rather than shifting that material out of the way.
Choose the paste command that fits the edit
| Goal | Command | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Duplicate selected events at the cursor | Paste (Ctrl+V) | Inserts at the cursor and may overlap existing events. |
| Make room for the copied material | Paste Insert (Ctrl+Shift+V) | Shifts existing events in time to accommodate the pasted contents. If the cursor is in the middle of an event, that event is split at the cursor. |
| Make several copies | Paste Repeat (Ctrl+B) | Repeats the copied contents end-to-end or at an even spacing you specify. If the spacing interval is shorter than the copied material, copies overlap. |
| Apply settings to another event | Paste Event Attributes | Transfers event properties rather than making a duplicate; selective paste lets you choose which properties to apply. |
How to repeat a clip several times
Copy the event or events, place the cursor at the first copy’s start, then choose Edit > Paste Repeat or press Ctrl+B. Enter the number of copies and choose end-to-end placement or even spacing. Check the spacing against the length of the copied material: a shorter interval causes the repeated events to overlap.

How to copy effects or other event settings
To reuse an effect chain, pan/crop setup, playback-rate change, or another event property without duplicating the clip, copy the source event and use Paste Event Attributes. The command is available from the event context menu and the video event More button.
Choose Selectively Paste Event Attributes when you want only specific settings. VEGAS Pro 2026 Help lists options including event switches, audio pitch shift, video playback rate and undersample rate, video event effects and effect keyframes, video event pan/crop, video event velocity envelopes, and pre/post transitions. Select the relevant attributes rather than assuming every property will be applied.
Copying a time selection instead of whole events
A time selection copies the portions of events that fall inside the selected time range across tracks. If you also select events, the clipboard contains only the portions of those selected events inside that range. This is different from copying selected whole events without a time selection.

Events in a group can be affected together. VEGAS Pro 23 Help says that when Cut, copy, and delete grouped events is enabled in Editing preferences, copying one event also affects other events in its group. To copy only the selected event, temporarily choose Options > Ignore Event Grouping.

Check the destination track and cursor
Before pasting, verify that the cursor is at the intended start position and that the selected destination track matches the event type: video events belong on a video track, and audio events on an audio track. Clicking in the timeline sets both the cursor position and the selected track, so a click in the wrong place can affect where the paste goes.
- If the copy appears over another clip, use Paste Insert when you want later events shifted to make room.
- If more events copied than expected, check whether the selected events are grouped and whether grouped-event editing is enabled.
- If the clipboard contains only part of a clip, check whether a time selection was active when you copied.
- If the paste does not land where intended, recheck the cursor position and destination track type.
