You can manage a WordPress site over public Wi-Fi more safely if the connection uses correctly configured HTTPS, your account has strong authentication, and your software is maintained. Before entering a password, confirm the browser shows the expected HTTPS address. A VPN alone does not fix an insecure WordPress login, a compromised device, or outdated site software.
Is public Wi-Fi safe for logging in to WordPress?
An unencrypted connection is not trustworthy for sending passwords. WordPress’s official hardening guide gives an internet cafe as an example: “An Internet cafe where you are sending passwords over an unencrypted connection, wireless or otherwise, is not a trusted network.” (WordPress hardening guidance.)

That does not mean every public Wi-Fi network is automatically unsafe, or that a VPN makes every login safe. The practical question is whether the connection to your site is protected by properly configured HTTPS and whether your account, device, and WordPress installation are secure.
Secure the connection before entering credentials
Use HTTPS for the site and admin area
WordPress strongly recommends HTTPS to help protect logins and site visitors. Check that the address begins with https:// and that it is the expected site domain before signing in. A padlock alone is not enough if the address is a lookalike or otherwise incorrect. See the WordPress HTTPS guidance.

HTTPS depends on TLS being set up correctly on the server. If your site does not have working HTTPS, ask your host or site administrator to configure it before using the admin area on an untrusted network.
Optionally force HTTPS for WordPress administration
WordPress documents the FORCE_SSL_ADMIN setting in wp-config.php to require HTTPS for logins and administration. Server-side HTTPS must already work. Sites behind a reverse proxy need the appropriate proxy configuration; an incorrect setup can cause redirect loops. Follow the official HTTPS instructions or have a qualified administrator make the change rather than adding the setting blindly.

Protect the WordPress account
Use a unique password and two-step authentication
Choose a strong password that you do not reuse on other sites, then enable two-step authentication if your WordPress login setup supports it. WordPress.org’s two-factor authentication guide covers authenticator codes (TOTP), security keys, and recovery codes.

Do not assume a self-hosted WordPress installation supports hardware-key login by default; the available methods depend on the login configuration or authentication service. Keep recovery codes somewhere separate from the device used to generate codes.

Use a device you trust
When possible, sign in from your own updated device rather than a shared or public computer. On a device you do not control, avoid saving passwords, do not leave the admin session open, and sign out when finished. These are prudent device-safety practices; they do not replace HTTPS or account protections.
Keep the site maintained and recoverable
Update core, plugins, and themes
WordPress’s security handbook calls keeping WordPress, plugins, and themes updated its most important general security practice, and recommends choosing extensions that are actively maintained. Back up before changes and understand restoration
Make a backup before software updates or security configuration changes, and know how to restore it. WordPress documentation recommends regular backups in its update guidance. A backup helps you recover from a problem; it does not prevent password interception or make an unencrypted login safe.

WordPress’s hardening guide describes putting server-side password protection in front of /wp-admin/ as an additional layer. This requires access to server or hosting configuration and is not a universal first step. If configured incorrectly, it can interfere with WordPress functionality such as admin-ajax.php. Have an administrator test the site’s admin features after setup; consult the hardening guide.

IP allowlisting is not a dependable general solution for people who travel: networks change, and an allowlist can lock you out. The core protections are correctly configured HTTPS, strong account authentication, maintained software, and a working recovery plan.
