Yahoo does not offer one switch for every kind of personalization. Use the setting that matches what you want to change: Ad Interest Manager for customized ads, Search Preferences for personal results, Yahoo News settings for the News feed, or Mail Plus settings for Deal Recommendations. Yahoo’s official instructions for each are below.

Turn off customized Yahoo ads
Open Yahoo’s Ad Interest Manager and turn off customized advertising. Yahoo says opting out means you will see generic ads instead of customized ones; it does not remove advertising. The Ad icon on an ad can also show why it was selected and lead to ad preference controls.

Yahoo treats commercial-email data as a separate personalization input. To change that preference, open Privacy Dashboard and Controls, find “Commercial Email Insights and Analysis,” and change the setting. Yahoo describes commercial emails as structured messages from retailers and other organizations, distinguishing them from personal messages from friends and family. If you turn this use off, ads and content can still appear, but may be less relevant. See Yahoo’s commercial email data help page.

Turning off customized ads is not the same as removing ads from Yahoo. Yahoo says ads in My Yahoo cannot currently be removed; Mail Plus ad removal does not apply to My Yahoo or other Yahoo pages outside that Mail service. Details: Can you remove ads from My Yahoo?

Stop personal results in Yahoo Search
Yahoo Search can show information drawn from Yahoo Mail when you are signed in, such as package delivery details, deals, or coupons. This is controlled separately from ad personalization.
- Open Yahoo Search Preferences.
- Under “Personal results,” deselect the results you do not want to see.
- Select “Save.”
Yahoo recommends signing out on shared devices or opting out of personal results if you do not want personal information to appear in search results.

Change personalized recommendations in Yahoo News
Adjust the topics in your feed
- Open the Yahoo News app and tap “Profile.”
- Tap “Settings,” then “Content preferences.”
- Open “Manage interests,” select or deselect topics, and tap “Continue.”
Yahoo requires at least five topics to remain selected. Changing those interests tailors the feed, but Yahoo says important news from all topics may still appear. See Yahoo’s instructions for managing News content preferences.
Change activity-based personalization
This is a different setting from chosen News topics. Yahoo says the News app may require “Articles and Media Based on Your Activity” to be allowed. If you do not want to allow activity-based personalization, Yahoo says you can still use Yahoo News on desktop or mobile web.

To review the setting, go to Yahoo privacy settings, open “Your privacy controls,” and confirm the account shown if you are signed in. Find “Articles and Media Based on Your Activity,” choose “Manage,” then set “Use my activity to make my content on Yahoo more relevant” to “Allow” or “Don’t Allow.” Yahoo notes that choosing “Don’t Allow” may produce a message requiring permission to use the app.

In the Yahoo Mail Plus desktop settings dashboard, look for the Deal Recommendations feature and toggle it off. Yahoo says dashboard feature settings save automatically. The option is not offered in every locale or account, so it may not appear. See Yahoo Mail Plus feature settings.
