Start in Walmart’s Purchase History: open the affected order, select Start a return, and follow the options shown for that item. Walmart says a damaged or defective item may qualify for a refund or replacement, but eligibility and return methods depend on the order.
Report the damage or defect through Purchase History

Open the Walmart app or Walmart.com and go to Purchase History.

Open the order and item details, then select Start a return.

Select the affected item and the damage or defect reason. If prompted, choose the offered resolution—refund or replacement—add relevant comments, and select a return method.

Review the order-specific instructions and submit the request. Walmart’s online return instructions list possible options such as a store return, scheduled pickup, mail, or eligible FedEx drop-off. The methods available vary by item.
If the item is oversized or none of the displayed carrier options is practical, contact Walmart customer care for instructions rather than arranging a different return route on your own.

Check eligibility and the return-by date
Walmart’s policy says an item received from Walmart.com that is damaged or defective “may be eligible” for return by mail or at a Walmart store and “may qualify” for a refund or replacement. That wording is conditional: rely on the options and return-by date displayed for your order, not an assumption that a particular remedy or method is guaranteed.
As of Walmart’s policy pages checked in 2026, most Walmart.com items can be returned within 90 days after purchase or receipt, subject to exceptions. Items sold and shipped by Marketplace sellers may have a 30-day return window. Purchase History shows the latest eligible date for return or replacement; check it promptly, especially for a Marketplace order. Walmart’s Standard Return Policy covers the general rules and exceptions.

Choose between a refund and replacement
Use the resolution options shown in the return flow. A replacement may suit you if you still want the item; a refund may suit you if you do not. Walmart does not promise that one option will be faster or available for every item, so compare the order-specific choices before submitting.
For a Marketplace bundle, the handling can differ from a regular item return: Walmart says you may request a replacement for the affected damaged item, with the request processed for that item rather than the whole bundle. An eligible individual bundle item may also be returned under the Marketplace Return Policy, with the refund based on its prorated bundle value. See Walmart’s Marketplace Bundles guidance.

Keep the packaging and follow the return instructions
Keep the item, its packaging, and order details while Walmart reviews or processes the request. Walmart recommends retaining the manufacturer packaging and receipt for at least 90 days after purchase. Follow the specific instructions in your return confirmation, including any label, drop-off, pickup, or store directions.

Walmart generally sends a refund to the original payment method. Its refund guidance, checked in 2026, lists up to 7 days for credit- or debit-card refunds. It lists refunds within 3 hours for Walmart Gift Card, Walmart Cash, Walmart Balance, EBT/SNAP, and certain other payment types. These are Walmart’s stated timelines, not a guarantee that every transaction will post at the same time; check your order status and the current refunds page for your payment type. If the original payment method cannot be used for an online purchase, Walmart Balance may be used.
