How to Turn Off (or On) Google Docs Offline Sync

Use the shared Offline setting in Google Docs or Drive to enable or disable offline access, then manage offline availability for individual files separately.

On a computer, open the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides home screen and select Menu > Settings. Switch Offline off to disable offline access, or on to enable it. This is a shared setting: changing it in one editor also changes offline access for the other two. You can also turn the capability on or off in Google Drive settings.

Turn offline access on or off on a computer

Google’s computer instructions cover Chrome and Microsoft Edge. You must be online to set up offline access. For the Drive route, use Google Drive settings.

To enable offline access

  1. Connect to the internet and open Google Drive in Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
  2. Confirm that the Google Docs Offline extension is installed and enabled. Google notes that Edge users may be redirected to the Chrome Web Store to install it.
  3. In Drive, open Settings > Settings and turn on Offline. This enables creating, opening, and editing recent Docs, Sheets, and Slides files on that device while offline.
  4. Open the file you need offline. To select a specific file, open its More menu and choose Available offline. You can also open it and select File > Make available offline.

Google may save some recently opened files automatically when there is enough storage. Check the status near a document’s title to see whether it is ready for offline use.

To disable offline access

  1. Open the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides home screen.
  2. Select Menu > Settings.
  3. Switch Offline off.

You can also open Drive settings and turn off the Offline control. Depending on the interface, Google’s troubleshooting instructions may label the checkbox Offline or Sync to edit offline. Use the control shown in your account’s current settings. Turning it off disables shared offline access; it does not merely remove one file from offline use. See Google’s computer instructions and Drive troubleshooting guidance.

Global offline access versus a single file

The global Offline setting enables the offline capability for Docs, Sheets, and Slides. A file’s Available offline setting selects whether that particular file is kept accessible offline. Turning off the global setting disables the shared capability; changing one file’s availability is not the same as switching off offline access for the account.

  • For a particular computer file: use the file’s More menu and select Available offline, or open the file and choose File > Make available offline.
  • To check readiness: look at the status control near the document title.

What you need, and why Offline may already be on or unavailable

  • Supported browser and extension: Google’s computer guide supports Chrome and Microsoft Edge and requires the Google Docs Offline extension. Do not use a private or incognito window.
  • Internet and storage: complete setup while connected, and make sure the device has enough available storage for offline files.
  • One account per browser profile: only one Google account in each browser profile can have offline enabled. To use offline access with another account, create or use a separate Chrome or Edge profile.
  • Automatic setup: offline access may already be enabled on ChromeOS, if you selected Docs/Drive sync when creating a Chrome profile, or if Drive for desktop is installed.
  • Administrator controls: a managed account may say that offline sync is disabled by the administrator. The user cannot override that restriction in settings; contact the administrator.

Fix common offline sync problems

“Could not sync document” or a sync error

  1. Check that the device is connected to the internet.
  2. Try turning offline access off and back on.
  3. Confirm that you are using Chrome or Edge, are not in private browsing, have the extension enabled, and have an up-to-date browser.
  4. If the problem affects a particular file, it may be too large to sync. Google recommends reducing it, for example by copying smaller sections into new documents.

“Checking offline sync status. Please wait”

Reload the page. If it remains stuck, Google recommends clearing site data for docs.google.com in your browser settings.

Offline access still will not work

Check whether an administrator has disabled offline access. Also consider whether antivirus software, an ad blocker, firewall rules, or proxy settings are interfering with Drive; Google lists these among possible causes of Drive problems. Its troubleshooting page includes further guidance.

Android uses a different setting

On Android, open the Docs, Sheets, or Slides app and go to Menu > Settings > Make recent files available offline. To make one file available, use its More menu. These are app instructions, not the desktop browser path. See Google’s offline instructions.
