To create a montage in Premiere Pro, make a sequence, add your footage to its timeline, then trim and arrange the clips into a deliberate progression. Review the edit in the Program Monitor; use transitions or music only when they support the pacing.
1. Create a sequence for your montage
A Premiere Pro project can contain multiple sequences, each with its own settings. To create one, drag a clip from the Project panel onto the New Item icon. Premiere creates a sequence based on that clip. To add footage to a sequence you already have, drag clips from the Project panel to its timeline. Adobe’s sequence guidance explains the available workflow.

2. Add footage to the timeline
You can assemble clips from the Project panel or load a clip in the Source Monitor and add it to the Timeline panel. The Source Monitor’s Insert and Overwrite controls let you place a clip at the playhead: Insert shifts existing timeline material to make room, while Overwrite replaces material at the destination. Choose the method that fits your current assembly. Adobe’s guide to adding clips covers these options.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Build a progression by shortening shots, choosing where one gives way to the next, and changing their order. These edits affect the sequence, not the original media, so the source footage remains available in the Project panel.

- Trim: Drag a clip’s edge to adjust where it begins or ends.
- Cut: Select the Razor tool and click the clip where you want to split it. Press C to select the Razor tool.
- Reposition: Use the Selection tool (V) to drag clips to a new place on the timeline.
- Ripple edit: Use the Ripple Edit tool (B) when changing a clip’s edge should also close or open the resulting gap.
- Play or pause: Press Space to check how the shots flow together.
For exact tool behavior and timeline editing details, see Adobe’s clip-trimming guide.
4. Adjust a cut without changing total duration
If two neighboring shots feel mistimed but you want to preserve the sequence’s total length, use a rolling edit. It moves the boundary between the two clips: one shot becomes longer as the other becomes shorter. Adobe explains the tool in its rolling-edit guide.

5. Decide between a cut and a transition
When two clips touch on the timeline, Premiere uses a straightforward cut by default. That is often the clearest choice for brisk montage pacing. A transition can soften or stylize the change, but it needs usable frames from the clips. Adobe recommends trimming clips before applying a transition so more frames are available. Transitions can be placed on an edit point or at a clip’s beginning or end. See Adobe’s transition instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors6. Add and smooth audio where it helps
Place music on an audio track if it supports the images and intended rhythm. To crossfade adjacent audio clips, make sure the clips touch and are trimmed, then use the visible fade handles to create the crossfade. Adobe’s audio crossfade guide shows the process. Music is optional; the montage can also rely on its original clip audio or play without a music bed.

7. Review pacing in the Program Monitor
The Program Monitor previews the active sequence with its edits, transitions and effects. Play the entire montage to judge whether each shot has enough time, whether the order makes sense, and whether any transition or audio change distracts from the progression. Adobe documents playback controls in its Program Monitor guide; Space or L starts playback, and Space or K stops it.

The right sequence settings depend on where the finished montage will be delivered. Set them for the intended destination rather than assuming one resolution or frame rate fits every use. The destination is not specified here, so no single setting can be recommended.
