To stop future macOS beta updates, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates and choose Off. That stops beta updates from being offered; it does not roll back a beta version already installed. If you only want future stable updates, leave the installed system in place and wait for a compatible public update. Returning to an earlier macOS release may require erasing and reinstalling the Mac, which deletes its data.
Turn off future macOS beta updates
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select General in the sidebar, then choose Software Update.
- Click Beta Updates.
- Choose Off.
- Return to Software Update and install a public update when one is offered for your Mac. Review the version shown before installing.
Apple describes the control as: “Beta Updates | Turn off beta updates, or choose the type of beta to receive.” The option appears when the Mac is enrolled in the Apple Beta Software Program. Apple’s Software Update settings guide explains the control.

Does turning beta updates off remove an installed beta?
No. Turning off Beta Updates stops future beta releases from being offered; it does not replace the version already installed. Apple’s beta enrollment guidance treats enrollment separately from reinstalling macOS.

Choose between waiting and reinstalling
| Your goal | What to do | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Stop future beta updates | Set Beta Updates to Off, then wait for a public update in Software Update. | This does not change the installed macOS. |
| Replace an installed beta with an earlier public macOS | Check Apple’s erase and reinstall instructions for your Mac model and hardware, and back up before proceeding. | An erase deletes information; Recovery does not offer one universal downgrade route. |
Before erasing or reinstalling macOS
Erasing a Mac deletes its information. Make a verified backup first, and keep important files available separately. Do not assume a full-system backup made on a beta can always be restored to an earlier macOS version; check compatibility and preserve individual files you cannot risk losing. Apple’s guidance for erasing an Apple silicon Mac explains the consequences and process.
Apple silicon Macs
Apple says that after erasing an Apple silicon Mac that had a macOS beta installed, reinstalling macOS can provide the previous release. This is specifically documented for Apple silicon; it should not be assumed to work the same way on Intel Macs. Erasing permanently removes data, so use this only when you intend to replace the installed system and have prepared a backup.

Intel Macs and macOS Recovery
Recovery’s result depends on the Mac and the startup method. On Intel Macs, Command-R, Option-Command-R, and Shift-Option-Command-R can target different macOS versions. On Apple silicon, a standard Recovery reinstall installs the current version of the most recently installed macOS; erasing after an upgrade or beta may change which release is offered. Apple’s macOS Recovery instructions and reinstall macOS guide describe the relevant procedures. A normal reinstall is not a universal downgrade method: Apple says reinstalling generally preserves apps and personal data, while the version offered depends on the Mac and Recovery method.

What to check before choosing a route
- Confirm whether you only want to stop future beta updates or need to replace the macOS already installed.
- Check whether your Mac uses Apple silicon or an Intel processor before following erase or Recovery instructions.
- Before any erase, verify that your backup completed and that critical files can be accessed independently.
- Follow Apple’s current instructions for your Mac model and macOS version; available releases and interface details can change.
