You can play Nintendo Switch Sports without a Nintendo Switch Online membership by choosing Play Nearby on one console. Nintendo describes this as the mode for playing without communication; it supports solo play against computer opponents and local multiplayer, with player limits varying by sport. Full online matches require an active membership and internet access.
Which mode should you choose?
| Mode | Internet and membership | Who you play with | Setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Play Nearby | No membership; Nintendo identifies this as play without communication. | Computer opponents for solo play, or people sharing the console. | One console; one to four players depending on sport. Nintendo Support Japan and its mode guidance. |
| Play Globally trial | No membership, but an internet connection and a software update are required. | A trial competition against computer opponents, not full online matchmaking. | Select Play Globally; see Nintendo’s FAQ and Japan support guidance. |
| Full online play | Internet access and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership are required. | Online matches. | Nintendo states the membership requirement in its U.S. FAQ and on the official game site. |
| LAN Play | The support instructions describe a wired shared-router setup but do not establish whether internet service can be absent. | Players using multiple consoles. | Up to four consoles and two players per console; each console needs the game, and the setup uses a wired router and Ethernet cables. See Nintendo’s LAN Play guide. |
How to play offline on one console
- Start Nintendo Switch Sports and choose Play Nearby, not Play Globally.
- Connect the Joy-Con controllers for the sport and number of players. Play Nearby supports one to four players, though the maximum depends on the sport.
- Choose a sport and begin. A solo player faces computer-controlled opponents; local multiplayer is for people playing on the same console.
Nintendo’s Japan support page lists all eight sports for Play Nearby. Basketball and Golf require a free software update, so download that update before relying on either sport offline. Nintendo’s explicit no-communication guidance describes Play Nearby on one console; it says this is not the mode for connecting nearby consoles through local wireless.

What you can do without Nintendo Switch Online
Play Nearby: the genuinely offline option
Choose Play Nearby when the console has no internet connection or when you simply do not want to use online services. It works without a Nintendo Switch Online membership and allows solo or same-console play, subject to each sport’s player limit. Nintendo’s English-language FAQ focuses on online requirements; its Japan support page explicitly identifies Play Nearby as the mode for playing without communication.

Nintendo also allows players without a membership to enter a trial competition through Play Globally. It is against computer opponents, not a way to access full online matchmaking for free. The trial needs an internet connection and a software update, so it will not work as an offline alternative.

Does LAN Play work without internet?
Nintendo documents LAN Play as a wired way to connect multiple consoles through a shared router. Its instructions specify up to four consoles, with up to two players per console, and require the game on each console, a wired router, and Ethernet cables. The guide does not explicitly confirm that LAN Play works when the router has no internet service. Treat it as a separate multi-console setup, not as a guaranteed offline substitute for Play Nearby.

- Joy-Con: Controller configuration depends on the sport and whether players share a console. Nintendo lists paired or single Joy-Con setups, and some play can use a Joy-Con with a Leg Strap.
- Handheld mode: Nintendo Switch Sports does not support handheld mode.
- Leg Strap: It is used for some Soccer gameplay, not required for basic Play Nearby play. Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Leg Strap. Check the specific game bundle’s contents and controller compatibility before buying a separate strap.
Nintendo’s FAQ covers controller and accessory details. Nintendo’s official game site also notes that online features require internet access and a Nintendo Account, and that any Nintendo Switch Online membership is sold separately.
