The safest way to stop unauthorized V-Bucks, Robux, coins, and other game-currency purchases is to use the console maker’s account controls rather than a physical accessory. On PlayStation, require a password at checkout for an adult account or set a child’s monthly spending limit to 0. On Xbox, make the console require the account passkey before a purchase. On Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, use the parent or guardian Nintendo Account’s Family Group spending restrictions; also check the phone or tablet separately if purchases are made inside a smart-device app.
Choose the control that matches your account
“Turn off in-game purchases” can mean two different things. A credential prompt adds a gate: the purchase can proceed only after the account password or passkey is entered. A spending restriction blocks a supervised account from making purchases within the scope of that restriction. The distinction matters when a child knows a console login, when a wallet already contains funds, or when a game is running on a phone rather than the console.

| Platform | Primary control | What it does | Account and device scope | Wallet or renewal detail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation | Require Password at Checkout for an adult account | Displays the sign-in password screen for each purchase | Applies to all devices used to access PlayStation Store; it does not apply to child accounts | Does not apply when funding the wallet |
| PlayStation child account | Family Management monthly spending limit | Sets the amount the child may spend; the default is 0 | Controlled by the family manager | Set the limit to 0 to prevent permitted monthly spending |
| Xbox | Ask for my passkey to make purchases > Passkey required | Requires the account passkey before a purchase | Configured through the Xbox console’s sign-in, security and passkey settings | The documented control is a purchase credential prompt |
| Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch | Family Group > supervised account > Spending Restrictions | Disables Nintendo eShop purchases and automatic renewal options when selected | Managed from the parent or guardian Nintendo Account; eShop and off-device purchases for child and supervised accounts can be restricted | Automatic renewal can be disabled; smart-device app purchases use the device’s controls |
Use the step-by-step section for your platform, then perform the verification checks near the end. Keep the account password or passkey private: a restriction is only useful if the person you are trying to protect cannot authenticate around it.
PlayStation: require a password or set a child limit to zero
Adult account on PS5
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Open Account, then Payment and Subscriptions.
- Choose Purchase Settings.
- Turn on Require Password at Checkout.
With this enabled, the password screen appears whenever a purchase is made. Enter the password used to sign in to the PlayStation account. This is a credential gate, not a blanket deletion of the store or of a game’s purchase button: someone who has the password can still complete the transaction.

Adult account on PS4
- Go to Settings.
- Choose Account Management, then Account Information.
- Open Wallet and select Purchase Settings.
- Set Require Password for Purchases to Yes.
The PS4 label is slightly different from the PS5 label, but it serves the same purpose: a password is requested at checkout. Do not assume that a console setting is limited to that one machine. PlayStation states that the checkout-password setting applies to all devices used to access PlayStation Store.
Adult account in the PlayStation App
- Open PlayStation Store in the PlayStation App.
- Open the menu and choose Payment Methods.
- Enable Require Password at Checkout.
Use this route when the account is managed from a phone. After changing it, test a purchase flow on the console and in the app so you know the account is asking for the password where you expect it.
Child account: use Family Management, not the adult checkout switch
PlayStation’s checkout-password setting does not apply to child accounts. The family manager must control a child’s spending through Family Management.

- Sign in to Account Management.
- Open Family Management.
- Select the child’s account.
- Edit Monthly Spending Limit.
- Set the limit to 0 when the goal is to prevent spending.
On a PS5, the equivalent console route is Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > child > Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit. Sony’s current support guidance, accessed in 2026, says the monthly spending limit is set to 0 by default and that the family manager controls how much the child may spend.
Important PlayStation exceptions
- Wallet funding: Require Password at Checkout does not apply when funding the wallet. If money is being added to the wallet, treat wallet funding as a separate control and check the account’s payment and family settings.
- Child accounts: Do not rely on the adult-account checkout toggle for a child profile; use the child’s monthly spending limit in Family Management.
- Multiple devices: Because the adult checkout requirement applies to all devices used to access PlayStation Store, changing it on one supported route protects the account elsewhere as well. Confirm the setting is enabled on the correct adult account.
Xbox: require the account passkey before a purchase
Set the purchase requirement on the console
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Choose System, then Settings.
- Open Account.
- Select Sign-in, security & passkey.
- Choose Change my sign-in & security preferences.
- Select Customize.
- Choose Ask for my passkey to make purchases.
- Select Passkey required.
Once selected, the console requests the account passkey before a purchase. This is an authentication requirement rather than a setting that removes store items or disables a game’s own currency screen. The practical protection comes from keeping the passkey confidential and from not leaving an authenticated adult account available to another user.
Confirm the Xbox setting
- Return to Sign-in, security & passkey and verify that the purchase preference still reads Passkey required.
- Start a checkout far enough to display the credential prompt, then cancel before confirming the transaction.
- If more than one person uses the console, check which account is signed in before opening the store. A passkey requirement on one account does not change the credentials of a different account.
The documented Xbox control is the console’s purchase-passkey preference. It is therefore best treated as a sign-in credential gate, not as a statement that every possible purchase channel or every supervised-account policy is disabled.

Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch: restrict a supervised account
Disable eShop purchases and automatic renewal
- Sign in to the parent or guardian’s Nintendo Account.
- Select Family Group.
- Choose the supervised account you want to manage.
- Open Spending Restrictions.
- Select the options that disable purchases and automatic renewal on Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and the official Nintendo website.
- Save the change.
Nintendo’s wording is explicit: ticking the spending-restriction box disables purchases and automatic-renewal options for the supervised account. This is the closest of the three platforms’ documented controls to a direct purchase block for a child or supervised profile.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use age-based restrictions where appropriate
Nintendo also provides age-based purchase restrictions. Apply the age setting that matches the account’s permitted content and spending policy, then review the spending-restriction selection itself. Age controls and spending controls answer different questions: one concerns what content or services an account may access, while the other concerns whether it may spend money or renew a purchase.
Do not overlook purchases inside phone and tablet apps
Nintendo distinguishes smart-device app purchases from eShop and off-device purchases controlled through the parent or guardian Nintendo Account. If a child buys game currency inside an app on a phone or tablet, use that device’s own purchase-control settings as well. A Nintendo Account restriction alone is not the only control for that transaction path.

What “off” means on each platform
Credential prompts versus hard restrictions
PlayStation adult accounts and Xbox use a password or passkey prompt. These settings stop an accidental tap or an unauthorized user who lacks the credential, but they do not make a purchase technically impossible for the credential holder. Nintendo’s Family Group spending restriction is designed for supervised accounts and disables the specified eShop purchase and automatic-renewal options.
Wallet balances and recurring charges
PlayStation’s checkout-password requirement does not cover wallet funding, so adding money to the wallet needs separate attention. Nintendo’s spending restriction explicitly includes automatic renewal options. The Xbox procedure supplied for this account uses a passkey at purchase; it does not document a separate wallet-funding or renewal switch, so verify those transaction types independently if they are relevant to your household.

Account-wide and device-specific behavior
PlayStation says its adult checkout-password setting applies across devices that access PlayStation Store. Nintendo’s supervised-account restrictions are administered from the parent or guardian Nintendo Account and cover eShop and specified off-device purchases, while smart-device app purchases remain under the phone or tablet’s controls. Xbox documents the setting as a console navigation path that makes the console request the account passkey. These scopes are why a successful console test should be followed by a check of any phone, tablet, website, or wallet route the account can use.
Best Value
Verification checklist after changing the setting
- Identify the account: Confirm that the restriction is attached to the adult, child, or supervised account that actually makes the purchase.
- Check the exact label: Look for Require Password at Checkout on PlayStation, Passkey required on Xbox, or Spending Restrictions on Nintendo.
- Test without completing a purchase: Open a store item, proceed to the final confirmation stage, and verify that the expected password, passkey, or blocked state appears. Cancel before payment is submitted.
- Test every route: Include the console, the PlayStation App or official Nintendo website where applicable, and any phone or tablet app used for in-game purchases.
- Review recurring payment paths: On Nintendo, confirm that automatic renewal is disabled for the supervised account. On PlayStation, remember that wallet funding is outside the checkout-password setting.
- Protect the credential: Do not disclose the adult password or passkey, and avoid saving it where another user can retrieve it.
Troubleshooting common failures
The option is missing
First check the account type. PlayStation’s adult checkout setting is not the control for a child account; open Family Management and edit the child’s monthly spending limit instead. Nintendo’s spending restriction is managed from the parent or guardian Nintendo Account, not solely from the supervised console profile. On Xbox, follow the full path through Sign-in, security & passkey; the purchase choice is inside the customized sign-in and security preferences.
A purchase still succeeds
Determine whether the transaction used a different account or channel. On PlayStation, a child account may be governed by its monthly limit while an adult account remains able to purchase after entering its password. On Nintendo, a phone or tablet app has its own purchase controls. On Xbox, make sure the console is asking for the passkey of the account that is currently signed in. Also distinguish a test that reached a credential prompt from a test that was actually completed; the prompt is the expected protection for PlayStation adult and Xbox settings.
Wallet money or renewals behave unexpectedly
PlayStation’s Require Password at Checkout setting does not cover wallet funding, so adding funds can follow a different path. Nintendo’s Family Group spending restriction includes automatic renewal options when selected. If a transaction type is not described by the platform’s setting, do not assume that a checkout prompt or eShop restriction covers it; inspect the relevant wallet, renewal, or device control separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe child can buy from another device
Map the purchase to its platform. PlayStation’s adult checkout requirement is stated to apply to all devices accessing PlayStation Store. Nintendo eShop and off-device purchases for supervised accounts can be restricted through the parent account, but smart-device app purchases require the phone or tablet’s own controls. For any platform, repeat the verification checklist on the alternate device instead of assuming that a console setting governs a separate app store.
A practical household policy
- Use a zero monthly limit for a PlayStation child account when no spending is allowed.
- Require a password at checkout on every adult PlayStation account used by other household members.
- Set Xbox to Passkey required and keep the passkey known only to the authorized purchaser.
- Manage Nintendo supervised accounts from the parent or guardian Nintendo Account, selecting spending restrictions and disabling automatic renewal when that is the policy.
- Apply the phone or tablet’s purchase controls to every smart-device game that can sell currency.
- Recheck settings after adding a new console, changing the signed-in account, or installing a game on another device.
These controls are first-party account settings and do not require buying a separate physical product. The right combination is determined by who uses the account, whether the platform offers a hard spending restriction or only a credential prompt, and whether purchases can also occur through a wallet, website, or mobile app.
