There is no single button sequence that turns off forced defrost on every Samsung refrigerator. The correct exit steps depend on your exact model number and control panel, so start by identifying those, then follow the instructions Samsung publishes for that model. Samsung’s support pages on Cooling Off mode (also called Demo mode) describe a different function, and their button combinations should not be used as a forced-defrost fix.
Forced defrost and Cooling Off mode are different functions
People searching for a way out of forced defrost often land on Samsung’s Cooling Off guidance, and the two are easy to confuse. Samsung describes Cooling Off mode as a state that disables cooling in the refrigerator, freezer, and ice maker. Its U.S. support pages explain how to leave that state, and they say the steps differ by panel and model family.

Samsung’s support material does not provide a universal forced-defrost cancellation sequence. Third-party repair guidance, such as iFixit’s guide to initiating forced defrost on a Samsung refrigerator, describes several forced-defrost modes and exit methods that vary by layout. Treat that kind of guide as a model-specific starting point, and check any steps against your own model’s manual before pressing anything.
Step 1: Find the exact model number
Model numbers are the only reliable way to match instructions to your appliance. Samsung’s own pages point readers to the user manual for the correct steps, and a family-level instruction can be wrong for a neighboring model with a different panel.

Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting guidance lists exit combinations for common panel layouts and for Family Hub models. These combinations are model-specific. For one RF28 family, Samsung’s support page gives a particular sequence, and that sequence applies only to the models that page covers. Use the page for your exact panel, not a combination from a neighboring model or a forum post.

- Treating “OF OF” or “O FF” as proof that forced defrost is active. Samsung links those signs to Cooling Off mode.
- Assuming the Cooling Off food warning applies to every defrost state. Samsung’s food-storage caution is tied to Cooling Off mode, and the reviewed sources do not extend it to forced defrost.
- Relying on secondary repair guides as if they were Samsung’s official procedure.
