For a new, unlocked phone in the US at $150 or less, the verified shortlist is currently one model: the Motorola moto g play (2024) LTE 64GB unlocked, which a Best Buy search result listed at $99.99. Treat that as a starting point, not a ranking. This guide is not based on hands-on or lab testing, so it cannot tell you how these phones perform on camera, battery life, or everyday speed. The $99.99 figure is a search-result price with no capture date stated, so confirm it before you buy.
Start with the full price, not the sticker
A phone that appears to cost less than $150 may cost more once you account for its purchase conditions. Check these in order:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Condition. New, refurbished, open-box, and used units are sold at different prices and are listed separately. Best Buy’s unlocked-phone results include a condition filter, and the retailer defines its refurbished and open-box categories apart from new listings. Read the warranty and return terms the seller states for each category.
- Lock status. An unlocked phone is not tied to one carrier at purchase; a carrier-locked phone is. Set the unlocked filter if you plan to use a carrier different from the one that sold the phone.
- Service plan. The handset price is separate from the plan you need to use it. Add the monthly plan cost, and any activation charge, to the phone price before comparing options.
- Tax and shipping. Check whether the price you see at checkout includes tax and shipping, since a search-result price may not show either.
- Exact model number. Match the model number on the listing to the model you are comparing. Product names alone do not identify a specific regional version.
What to verify on the exact model
- Carrier compatibility. Compatibility is model-specific and should be checked before purchase, not assumed from the word unlocked. Best Buy’s filters include carrier compatibility, and Motorola’s US phone comparison page links to its carrier-compatibility resource.
- Storage. The candidate is listed with 64GB of internal storage. Whether it supports expandable storage was not confirmed for this guide.
- Connectivity. The listing identifies this model as LTE. Do not expect 5G from this model without confirming it on the listing.
- Software support. No support timeline was established for this model. Check Motorola’s current Android and security-update statement for the exact model and region before you buy.
- Seller. Confirm who sells and ships the phone, and whether the retailer itself fulfills the order.
The candidate: Motorola moto g play (2024) LTE 64GB unlocked
This is the lowest-priced option that surfaced with an unlocked listing. It suits a buyer who is willing to accept an LTE-only model in exchange for a low purchase price.

What the listing confirms
- The model is listed as unlocked, with 64GB of internal storage.
- A Best Buy search result displayed a price of $99.99.
What is not established
When the product page was opened, it showed the model but no price, so $99.99 should be treated as a search-result figure rather than a confirmed current price. The sources did not evaluate the phone’s performance, camera, battery life, or software support, and they did not confirm current stock.

If the phone will not work on your carrier
- Confirm the listing says unlocked. A carrier-locked phone will not behave the same way on another network.
- Compare the model’s listed bands against your carrier using the carrier-compatibility resource on Motorola’s US site.
- If the phone does not fit your carrier, return it under the seller’s return terms before you activate it.
