How to turn off emoji reactions in Gmail

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Emoji reactions in Gmail let you respond to message threads with quick heart, thumbs up, and other icons. For some people, that’s convenient; for others, it’s noisy or distracting—especially on busy inboxes.

If you want to turn off emoji reactions in Gmail, the setting (or an equivalent control) depends on whether you’re using Gmail on desktop or the Gmail app. This guide covers both, plus what to do when the option doesn’t show up.

What emoji reactions in Gmail are (and why you might want them off)

In Gmail, emoji reactions are part of how Google surfaces “quick response” actions inside certain conversations. Depending on your account and rollout, those reactions can appear in the message thread UI and/or related chat-style experiences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turning them off can reduce accidental reactions, declutter threaded views, and keep your inbox focused on reading and replying normally.

Before you start: check your Gmail version and feature availability

  • Web: Use the latest Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox.
  • Mobile: Update the Gmail app to the newest version from the App Store or Google Play.
  • Accounts: Make sure you’re signed into the exact Google account where you want changes.

Reacting from an email thread vs. a chat-style conversation

Make sure you’re targeting the UI you’re actually using. Some accounts show emoji reactions only in certain conversation contexts. If you’re reacting to something and you’re not seeing any reaction settings, it may be tied to a different product surface inside Google’s messaging experience.

Troubleshooting checklist

If the toggle exists but the reactions don’t stop, treat it like a state sync problem first, then escalate to account controls.

Clear cache and refresh permissions

  • Hard refresh the page (on most browsers: Ctrl + Shift + R on Windows/Linux, Cmd + Shift + R on macOS).
  • If using a corporate/shared computer, also clear site data for mail.google.com.

Try a different browser or signed-out test

Sign out of Gmail in the other browser, sign in again, and check whether reactions are still available. This quickly identifies cached session issues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm you’re using the right Google account

It’s common to accidentally configure one profile in the browser while the mobile app uses a different Google account. Verify the account email address in both places.

Google Workspace or admin controls may restrict the toggle

If your Gmail is managed by an organization, an admin may enforce settings that override personal preferences. In that case, you may have no visible switch, or changes won’t take effect.

  • Check for a Workspace-managed account banner in Gmail (if present).
  • Ask your admin whether reactions are allowed for Gmail/Chat experiences.

Common mistakes

  • Only changing mobile settings: If the option exists only on web for your account, mobile may not reflect it right away.
  • Saving changes in the wrong tab: Some toggles live under specific settings tabs. Switching tabs without saving can undo changes.
  • Assuming reactions are universal: Some reaction controls show up only in certain conversation types or UI layouts.
  • Not updating the app: Gmail app updates can add missing toggles—especially when new UI components roll out.

FAQ

Will turning off emoji reactions stop other people from reacting?

No. You’re only changing your own UI preferences. Other participants may still be able to react depending on their own settings and rollout status.

I can’t find any emoji reaction option in Gmail settings. What should I do?

First, confirm you’re on desktop web and you’ve opened See all settings. If it’s still missing, it’s likely not available for your account yet or it’s controlled by an admin. Try updating the Gmail app and check chat-related settings as a workaround.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do I still see reaction buttons after switching the toggle off?

Try hard refresh on web, log out/in, and test in a different browser. If you’re on a managed Google Workspace account, admin policies may prevent the UI from changing.

Functionally, yes, but the exact toggle location and availability can differ. Many users get the most consistent result by changing the setting on desktop web first.

Bottom Line

To turn off emoji reactions in Gmail, check Gmail Settings on the web for a toggle related to reactions or emoji reactions, then save and refresh. On iPhone, iPad, and Android, the setting may be present in the Gmail app only if your account has the rollout.

If the toggle doesn’t exist for you, disable chat-related features and verify you’re looking at the correct conversation UI. If changes still won’t apply on a managed account, your Google Workspace admin may need to adjust the policy.
