To make a document page white in Word for the web, open View in the ribbon and select Switch Backgrounds. This changes the document page, not necessarily the surrounding Word interface.
Make the document page light

Open your document in Word for the web.

Select View in the ribbon.

Select Switch Backgrounds. The document page should change to a light background.

To check whether Word retained the preference, leave the document and reopen it in the same browser. Word remembers this page-background choice per browser. Microsoft’s instructions for Dark Mode in Word describe the web setting.

What changes—and what does not
Switch Backgrounds changes the page where you read and edit the document. It may not make the ribbon and other Word controls light. Word for the web can turn on dark mode automatically when your browser or operating-system theme is dark, so the page and the surrounding interface can look different.

The setting is a personal view preference: Microsoft says collaborators’ dark-mode preferences are not affected, and documents print with a light page color. The page-background choice is remembered per browser; it does not carry across Word on the web, Windows, and Mac.
If the page turns dark again
If the preference does not persist after you return to the document in the same browser, check that browser cookies are enabled. Microsoft lists cookies as necessary for preferences to persist. See Microsoft’s guidance for details.
