On a personal desktop installation, right-click Chrome’s address bar and clear Always show AI Mode. That is Google’s supported control for hiding the AI Mode and “Add tabs and more” buttons from the address bar. It does not guarantee removal of the separate AI Mode control that may appear in the New Tab page search box.
Remove the AI Mode button from Chrome’s search bar
The setting takes only a few clicks and does not require an extension, command-line switch or administrator access. Use it in the Chrome profile where the button appears:

- Open Chrome on your computer.
- Click the address bar, also called the omnibox.
- Right-click inside the address bar.
- In the context menu, clear Always show AI Mode.
- Right-click the address bar again to confirm that Always show AI Mode is no longer selected.
Once the option is cleared, Chrome hides the AI Mode entry point and the Add tabs and more control from the address bar. This is a visibility preference for that surface, not a promise that Google AI Mode is disabled throughout Google Search.

What this setting changes—and what it does not
The wording matters. Always show AI Mode controls whether those buttons are displayed in Chrome’s address-bar interface. Clearing it does not document a universal off switch for every AI Mode launch point, Search result, experiment or account-level feature.
- Address bar: The AI Mode and “Add tabs and more” entry points are hidden after you clear the preference.
- Google Search: The address-bar preference is not described as disabling AI Mode responses or an AI Mode page reached elsewhere in Search.
- New Tab page: A separate AI Mode button can appear in the New Tab search box. The consumer help instructions do not provide a matching universal off switch for that button.
- Keyboard behavior: If a key such as Tab still presents an AI-related action, clearing the visible address-bar button does not establish that every keyboard entry point has been disabled.
Think of the preference as “hide this Chrome entry point,” rather than “turn off all Google AI features.” That distinction prevents the common mistake of expecting the New Tab page or Search experience to change immediately.
How to remove AI Mode from the New Tab page
Chrome’s New Tab page can expose AI Mode in the search box independently of the address bar. Google documents how to launch AI Mode from that box, but its consumer documentation does not describe a universal user-facing switch that removes the New Tab button on every installation.
If you clear Always show AI Mode and the New Tab button remains, that is consistent with the two controls being separate surfaces. Do not assume that changing a Google Search Labs experiment will remove Chrome’s New Tab presentation; the documented address-bar preference does not make that promise.
Why the New Tab button may appear for one person and not another
Google says the New Tab AI Mode presentation is rolling out gradually outside the United States and to languages other than English. It may not be available on every device. Availability can therefore differ by:

- Whether Google has enabled the feature for that device or experiment cohort
Seeing the button on a New Tab page does not mean the address-bar preference failed. Conversely, not seeing it does not prove that AI Mode is disabled for the account or region.
If “Always show AI Mode” is missing
The menu item is part of a staged Chrome experience, so its absence has several possible explanations. Work through these checks in order:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Update Chrome. Install the current release offered by Chrome’s About page, then relaunch the browser. The menu label and placement can change between milestones.
- Check the correct profile. Chrome preferences are profile-specific. Switch to the profile where the AI Mode button is visible and repeat the right-click action there.
- Confirm that the feature is available to you. Google’s rollout is gradual and depends on version, operating system, language, geography and experiment status. A missing menu item can mean the feature is not enabled rather than that a setting is hidden.
- Open a fresh browser window. Close and reopen Chrome after updating or changing profile settings so the address-bar interface is rebuilt.
If the button is present but the menu item never appears after those checks, the consumer documentation does not provide another supported personal preference to force the control. Avoid treating an undocumented registry edit or command-line switch as equivalent to Google’s setting.
Why Chrome versions show different AI Mode controls
Google announced the Chrome AI Mode experience on April 16, 2026. Chrome 139 release notes state that the address-bar entry-point button and the New Tab inline compose box began rolling out across Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. A staged rollout means two computers on the same day can show different labels or no button at all.
Differences can persist after an update because Chrome features are often enabled progressively. The version number alone does not establish that a particular account, language or device has received the feature. Treat the visible interface—not a screenshot from another computer—as the source of truth for your profile.

Personal toggle, administrator policy or experimental flag?
There are three approaches people commonly consider. They differ substantially in scope and reliability:
Recommended Free Tools
| Method | Scope | Permissions | Support and durability | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Address-bar preference Clear Always show AI Mode |
Hides AI Mode and “Add tabs and more” in the address bar | Normal user access | Officially documented by Google for personal desktop Chrome; may change as the interface rolls out | Personal computers where you only need the address-bar button hidden |
| AIModeSettings policy | Can control Google AI Mode integrations in the address bar and New Tab page search box | Chrome administrator access | Supported for managed deployments, but policy names, values, supported milestones and rollout behavior must match the organization’s current Chrome Enterprise templates and installed version | Work, school or other centrally managed Chrome installations |
| Chrome flags | Depends on the individual experiment; may affect one surface or several | Usually available to the local user | Experimental and not a durable fix; flag names and behavior change, and current versions may rely on policy settings instead | Testing only, when you accept that an update can remove or alter the flag |
For a personal installation, the first method is the appropriate starting point because it is simple and explicitly described by Google. Enterprise policy is broader but belongs to administrators. Flags should not be presented as a permanent solution.
Managed Chrome: using the AIModeSettings policy
Chrome Enterprise’s policy catalog includes AIModeSettings, a policy family described as controlling Google AI Mode integrations in the address bar and the New Tab page search box. This is different from the right-click preference: it is an administrator control intended for managed deployments.
When the policy applies
A work or school administrator may configure Chrome so that AI Mode integrations are allowed, restricted or otherwise controlled across enrolled browsers. The exact policy values and behavior depend on the Chrome Enterprise templates and milestone supported by that organization’s installed version.
What an employee or student should do
Do not edit policy files, registry entries or management settings yourself on a managed computer. Ask the organization’s administrator whether AIModeSettings is configured and which surfaces it covers. The administrator can verify the policy against the current Chrome Enterprise documentation and deployment standards.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If a policy controls both the address bar and New Tab search box, clearing the personal address-bar preference may not override it. Conversely, a personal preference cannot give a user control over a setting enforced centrally.
Should you use chrome://flags to disable AI Mode?
Flags are tempting because they can expose experimental switches before a normal setting exists. They are not a dependable way to manage this feature. Third-party version tracking reports that flag names and behavior change, and that current Chrome releases may use policy settings instead of a stable flag.
- A flag can disappear after an update.
- The same flag name can change scope or have no effect on a later milestone.
- Experimental settings can interact with other unfinished features.
- A flag change may affect more than the button you intended to hide.
Use a flag only for temporary testing when you can undo it and accept that the result may not survive the next Chrome update. For a personal desktop browser, the documented address-bar preference is less invasive and easier to reverse.

“How do I remove the AI Mode button from Chrome’s search bar?”
Focus the address bar, right-click it and clear Always show AI Mode. Reopen the context menu to verify that the check mark is gone. The button should disappear from the address bar; the instruction does not promise removal from the New Tab page.

“Why did the address-bar button disappear but the New Tab button remain?”
They are separate presentations. The documented preference hides the address-bar entry point, while Google documents the New Tab search-box button separately. There is no universal consumer switch in the cited help guidance that guarantees both will vanish together.

“How do I stop Tab from opening AI Mode?”
First clear Always show AI Mode, because that removes the documented address-bar entry point associated with the feature. If pressing Tab still produces an AI Mode action, Chrome’s consumer instructions do not identify a separate, universal keyboard setting. Check whether the browser is managed and ask an administrator about AIModeSettings if it is a work or school device.
“Can I remove AI Mode from the New Tab page with Search Labs?”
Do not rely on that assumption. The available consumer guidance explains how to launch AI Mode from the New Tab search box but does not provide a matching universal removal switch. Search Labs controls and Chrome’s New Tab presentation are not documented as interchangeable.
“The setting came back after an update. What should I check?”
Chrome’s AI Mode experience is rolling out in stages, so labels and controls can change between milestones. Check the browser version, relaunch after updating, and repeat the address-bar preference in the affected profile. If the computer is managed, a policy may be reapplying the organization’s configuration.

Choose the personal toggle when
- You own or control the computer.
- Your goal is specifically to remove the address-bar button.
- You want an officially documented setting that can be reversed from the same menu.
Contact an administrator when
- The browser belongs to a workplace, school or other managed environment.
- The address bar and New Tab page are both controlled centrally.
- The preference is unavailable, locked or repeatedly restored.
Avoid relying on a flag when
- You need the result to survive Chrome updates.
- You are troubleshooting someone else’s computer.
- You cannot afford unexpected changes to experimental browser features.
What to expect after disabling the address-bar entry point
After clearing the preference, the address bar returns to its normal layout without the AI Mode and “Add tabs and more” buttons. You can continue using Chrome’s ordinary address-bar search and navigation functions. A New Tab page may still display its own AI Mode control, and Google may change the presentation as the 2026 rollout progresses.
The reliable conclusion is narrow: clearing Always show AI Mode hides the address-bar entry point on a personal desktop installation. It is not documented as a master switch for every AI Mode surface, and New Tab behavior may require a separate rollout decision or administrator policy.
