To stop new chats on a personal ChatGPT account from being used to improve OpenAI’s models, turn off Improve the model for everyone in Settings → Data controls. That switch does not remove conversations from your history. For a conversation that should stay out of history and memory as well, start a Temporary Chat. Delete older conversations separately, and remember that submitting thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback can create a training exception on personal plans.
The quickest way to stop training use
The account-level control applies to new conversations on a signed-in personal account. It is available on the web and in the iOS and Android apps.

- Open ChatGPT and sign in.
- Open the account menu.
- Select Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Switch off Improve the model for everyone.
- Confirm the change if ChatGPT asks you to do so.
On iPhone or Android
- Open the ChatGPT app and open the sidebar.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Select Data controls.
- Switch off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI says the setting for a signed-in account applies across devices. You do not need to repeat the change separately on your phone, tablet and computer. The control affects whether new conversations are eligible to improve OpenAI models; it does not retroactively erase chats that are already saved.
What the account switch changes—and what it does not
The label can be misleading because it refers to model-improvement use, not the visibility of your conversation list. Once the switch is off:

- New conversations can still appear in your normal chat history.
- Existing regular chats remain in the account unless you delete them.
- Archived chats are not unarchived, hidden or removed by the switch.
- Project chats are not deleted or hidden by the switch.
In other words, this is an opt-out from model-improvement use, not a “do not save” mode. If your goal is simply to prevent future training use while retaining a searchable history, the account switch is the relevant choice. If you also want a particular conversation out of history and memory, use Temporary Chat instead.
Use Temporary Chat for a conversation that should not enter history
Temporary Chat is the stronger per-conversation option. Start a new chat and choose Temporary before entering the material you want handled this way. OpenAI describes Temporary Chats as conversations that do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve its models.
Temporary does not mean that no copy can exist anywhere. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. That is a stated maximum retention period, not a promise that the conversation is instantly destroyed when you close the tab.
Personalized versus non-personalized Temporary Chat
Temporary Chat can be personalized or non-personalized. A personalized temporary chat may use information already associated with your account, including existing memories, custom instructions and plugins. Choose the non-personalized option when you do not want those sources used for the conversation.
This choice affects what ChatGPT can draw on while answering; it does not change the stated Temporary Chat rule that the conversation is kept out of history, does not create or update memories, and is not used to improve OpenAI models.

What happens if you save a Temporary Chat
If you save the conversation, it becomes a regular chat. From that point, it follows the account’s ordinary personalization and model-improvement settings. A saved copy should therefore be treated like any other regular conversation rather than as a permanently temporary record.

Delete conversations that already exist
Turning off model-improvement use does not clean up your previous history. Delete an old conversation separately through the chat’s own menu or the deletion control provided by ChatGPT.
OpenAI says deletion removes the chat from your account view immediately and schedules permanent deletion within 30 days. The 30-day schedule has exceptions: data may already have been de-identified, or it may need to be retained longer for legal or security reasons. Deleted chats cannot be restored, so verify that you no longer need the conversation before confirming.
When to use deletion instead of Temporary Chat
- Use Temporary Chat before starting a new sensitive conversation that should not appear in history.
- Use Delete for an existing regular, archived or project conversation that you no longer want in your account view.
- Use the account-level switch when you want future chats kept in history but excluded from model-improvement use.
These controls solve different problems. Deleting one chat does not change the account-wide training preference, and switching off model improvement does not delete a chat.

Personal accounts and managed workspaces are different
On personal Free, Plus and Pro accounts, the Data controls setting provides the opt-out described above. The exact controls available to you can still vary by region or by changes to the product.
OpenAI says content from Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces is not used for training by default. Those products are administered environments: an administrator and the organization’s workspace policies can control privacy, retention and access settings. If you are using ChatGPT through an employer, school or healthcare organization, do not assume that your personal-account setting governs the workspace. Check the workspace’s own policy or ask its administrator which controls apply.
How to identify which rules apply
- If you signed in with your own personal Free, Plus or Pro account, start with Settings → Data controls.
- If the account is inside a Business, Enterprise, Edu or Healthcare workspace, review the workspace notice and administrator settings.
- If the control is missing, disabled or labeled differently, the account type, region or administrator policy may be responsible.
The feedback exception on personal plans
There is an important exception to the personal-plan opt-out. If you submit thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback after opting out, OpenAI may use the entire conversation associated with that feedback to train models. That means a conversation excluded by the account switch can become eligible through the feedback process.
Do not submit a rating on a conversation that must remain excluded from training. If feedback is necessary, first consider whether the conversation contains information you are not willing to have included in that process.
Choose the right setting for your situation
You want to keep a searchable history but stop new training use
Turn off Improve the model for everyone. New chats can remain in your history, while the account-level setting excludes them from model-improvement use. Avoid thumbs-up and thumbs-down feedback on conversations that must stay excluded.

You do not want one conversation in history or memory
Start a non-personalized Temporary Chat. This keeps the chat out of history, prevents it from creating or updating memories, and avoids using existing memories, custom instructions and plugins for personalization.
You need to remove a conversation you already had
Delete that chat separately. The account-level switch cannot retroactively remove it, and Temporary Chat cannot be applied after a regular conversation has already been created.
You use an organization-managed account
Check the workspace’s administrator and retention policy. Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare content is not used for training by default, but administrators and workspace policies determine which privacy, retention and access controls are available.

“I switched it off, but my chats are still visible.”
That is expected. The switch controls model-improvement use for new chats; it does not turn off chat history. Delete the conversations individually if they should leave the account view.

Check whether the conversation was saved. Saving converts a Temporary Chat into a regular chat. Also remember that OpenAI may retain a copy of an unsaved Temporary Chat for up to 30 days for safety, even though it does not appear in your history.
“A temporary conversation used my preferences.”
You may have selected personalized Temporary Chat. That mode can use existing memories, custom instructions and plugins. Start a new temporary conversation with the non-personalized option when those sources should not be used.
“The setting is missing or cannot be changed.”
Confirm whether you are in a personal account or a managed workspace. Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare environments can apply administrator-controlled policies, and availability can vary by region. If the account is managed, the workspace administrator is the appropriate person to ask.
“I opted out and then rated an answer.”
On personal plans, the entire conversation associated with thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback may be used to train models. Treat feedback as a separate data-use path and avoid rating a conversation that must remain excluded.

- Open Settings → Data controls and confirm that Improve the model for everyone is off on your signed-in account.
- For a new conversation that should not enter history, choose Temporary before typing.
- Select non-personalized Temporary Chat when existing memories, custom instructions or plugins should not be used.
- Do not save a Temporary Chat unless you accept that it will become a regular conversation.
- Delete older regular, archived or project chats separately; deletion cannot be undone.
- Do not submit thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback on a personal-plan conversation that must remain outside training.
- If you are in a Business, Enterprise, Edu or Healthcare workspace, read the administrator’s privacy and retention policy.
What “private” means in this setup
These controls address different stages of a conversation’s lifecycle. The account switch determines whether new chats are eligible to improve OpenAI models. Temporary Chat determines whether a particular chat appears in history or creates and updates memories, while allowing a safety copy for up to 30 days. Deletion removes a saved chat from the account view immediately and starts a scheduled deletion process with legal and security exceptions. Workspace administration can change the available controls, and personal-plan feedback can create a training exception.
For most personal users, the most complete combination is to turn off Improve the model for everyone once, use non-personalized Temporary Chat for conversations that should not enter history or memory, delete older chats separately, and avoid feedback on conversations that must stay excluded.
