To turn off captions, change the setting where the video is playing: use the app’s playback controls for streaming subtitles, or the TV’s Accessibility settings for captions on live TV. If text remains, check the connected streaming device, cable box, console, or the specific app; each can manage captions separately.
Choose the setting that controls the captions
First identify the source of the picture and sound: the TV’s antenna or cable input, a built-in streaming app, or an external device such as Roku, Apple TV, a game console, or a cable box. Closed captions supplied by a TV channel and subtitles selected inside an app may look similar, but they do not necessarily use the same setting.

These are starting points, not universal menu paths. Labels and locations vary by TV model, software version, app, and input. Official guidance from Samsung, LG, Roku, Google TV, and Apple describe source- or platform-specific controls.
Turn off captions on popular TV platforms
Samsung TV
On supported U.S. models, go to Home/Settings > General > Accessibility > Caption Settings > Caption, then turn Caption off. Samsung notes that features can vary by model and software version. Captions controlled by an app, console, or set-top box may need to be changed there instead.

LG TV
LG’s menu path depends on the webOS generation:
- webOS 26 or later: Settings > All Settings > General > Accessibility > Hearing Features > Closed Caption, then choose On/Off.
- webOS 6.0 or later: Settings > All Settings > General > Accessibility > Closed Caption.
- webOS 5.0 or earlier: Settings > All Settings > Accessibility > Closed Caption.
These paths come from LG guidance dated August 18, 2026; a particular model’s menu can differ.
Roku TV or Roku player
While a video is playing, press the Star button on the Roku remote to open the app menu and select the caption option. Roku’s device-wide control is under Settings > Accessibility > Captions mode. Some apps use their own caption controls and may not follow the Roku setting.

Google TV
For device-level captions, open Settings > Accessibility > Captions and switch Display off. Google warns that the preference may not apply to some apps. For a Google-rented or purchased title, press Down during playback and select Closed captions and audio. Subscription apps may have separate controls.
Apple TV and the Apple TV app
During playback, show the controls, open the Subtitles button, and select Off. To prevent automatic subtitles on Apple TV, go to Settings > Video and Audio > Automatic Subtitles and turn the setting off. In the Apple TV app on a smart TV or streaming device, Apple documents Settings > General > Automatic Subtitles.

If captions are still on
- Check the video’s own controls. While the program plays, open its playback menu and set Captions or Subtitles to Off. This is usually the right control for subtitles selected within a streaming app.
- Check the TV menu for live TV. If the TV’s tuner is receiving the program, open its Accessibility or Caption settings and disable captions.
- Check the device feeding the TV. If a Roku player, streaming box, cable box, game console, or disc player is connected, use that device’s remote and settings. Changing the TV menu may not change captions generated by another source.
- Check whether the text can be disabled. Some titles have permanent subtitles or do not offer an Off choice. Google notes that certain movies have permanent subtitles that cannot be turned off.
- Use the model-specific guide if labels differ. Look up the TV’s exact model and software version in its manufacturer’s support pages rather than assuming another model’s shortcut applies.
Can voice control turn captions off?
On Google voice setups that support caption commands, try “Turn off captions” or “Captions off.” This is a convenience option, not a command guaranteed to work with every TV, app, or connected device.

Caption and subtitle controls change on-screen text, not the selected audio track. In playback menus, keep the audio selection unchanged if you only want to remove text. Some menus place audio and subtitle choices together, so check which item you are changing before confirming.
