To turn a long YouTube video you own into a highlight, open it in YouTube Studio and use Clips and Shorts. You can choose a segment from the transcript or set its start and end times, preview the result, and create a draft Short or video clip. AI suggestions may also appear, but availability depends on your country and language.
Make a highlight from your own video in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, go to Content → Videos and select the video you want to edit.
- Open Clips and Shorts from the video’s left menu, then choose Create clip or Short.
- Choose whether to make a Short or a video clip.
- Select the section you want. Choose transcript text and confirm it, or enter start and end times on the timeline. If AI suggestions or a generated outline are available, use them to navigate the transcript, then check and adjust the selection yourself.
- For a Short, preview the result. If automatic captions are available, review them; YouTube says you can customize their style and position or turn them off. Create a draft and complete the usual upload flow.
- For a video clip, you can add an eligible intro or outro, then create a draft and finish uploading. YouTube recommends linking the source video in the clip description.
The transcript in this workflow is used for the Short’s auto-generated captions. Shorts made with the tool are automatically associated with the source video, except when the Short is private, unlisted, or Made for Kids. YouTube Help: Create Shorts from your videos

Choose a moment that works on its own
A highlight is more than a short excerpt: it needs a clear point and enough context to make sense to someone who has not watched the full video.

- Cut unnecessary setup, but keep the question or explanation that makes the moment understandable. For a tutorial, one complete step is usually clearer than several disconnected tips.
- Check the vertical crop. YouTube’s creator guidance recommends a 9:16 frame for Shorts; keep the important person or subject visible after cropping.
- Use captions or text overlays when they help viewers follow the moment, and make sure the excerpt still works as standalone content—even if it points viewers to the full video.

Know the difference between a viewer Clip and a creator Short
YouTube uses “clip” for two distinct outcomes. The viewer-facing Clips feature makes a 5-to-60-second segment that loops on the original video’s watch page. A creator can convert an entire viewer Clip into a Short. By contrast, Studio’s Clips and Shorts workflow creates a draft for a new creator upload from your existing video. What to try if the option you need is missing
AI suggestions or an outline do not appear
AI assistance is conditional, not required for making a highlight. YouTube lists Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States for these features, and lists English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. If the AI option is absent, use transcript selection or enter timestamps manually. Availability may also vary by account.

You want finer edits or a separate phone workflow
YouTube has announced Shorts editor controls for precise timing, rearranging or deleting clips, timed text and music, and previewing. Rollout and availability can vary. YouTube Create is a separate option: YouTube for Artists describes it as a free phone app for editing Shorts and videos and uploading them to YouTube, with timeline adjustments and voiceover. The Studio workflow described here starts from your own uploaded video. The viewer-facing Clips feature is a different way to make a loop associated with a video’s watch page; it does not create the same kind of creator upload. Use material you have the right to use, and check the video’s available options rather than assuming every video supports clipping.
