For quick PS5 clips, the console’s built-in capture tools are the simplest place to start. For recording console gameplay on a computer—with OBS scenes, audio tracks or an editing archive—use OBS Studio with a compatible capture device, or capture the PS Remote Play or Xbox app window. The app route avoids a capture card but depends on a fast, stable connection between console and computer. Switch-family consoles need to be docked for capture-card recording; Switch Lite cannot use that route.

There is no single best screen recording software for every console task. Native capture is convenient for a clip; computer software is more suitable when you need a recording setup with scenes, separate audio or a longer editing archive. Record PS5 gameplay with its built-in tools
For a quick recording, use the Create menu on the PS5 and choose the option that matches your goal:

Some scenes cannot be captured. In Capture Options, you can change the video file format and resolution and choose whether microphone or voice-chat audio is included. If you plan to include other players’ voices, ask them first; Sony’s audio guidance advises getting permission from people in voice chat.

Record console gameplay on a computer with OBS
OBS Studio can receive console footage through a capture device or by capturing a console-streaming app window. The capture-device approach is generally the more direct computer workflow; the app-window option trades extra hardware for greater reliance on the network.
Option 1: Use a capture device
- Check that the capture device supports your console’s video output and your computer’s operating system and connection. If you want to play on a display while recording, check passthrough specifications separately from capture specifications.
- Connect the console’s video output to the capture device, and connect the device to the computer as instructed by its manufacturer. Connect any headphones or audio equipment according to the device’s audio-routing guidance.
- Open OBS Studio and add a Video Capture Source for the capture device. Select the device and configure the video mode and audio inputs that your model supports.
- Set OBS to record, confirm the console picture and audio appear in the preview, and make a short test recording. Check playback before starting a longer session.
OBS documents capture-device use for console footage. For example, Elgato lists its Game Capture 4K X as compatible with PS5/Pro, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch, and lists OBS among supported apps. That is an example of a compatible product, not an independently tested recommendation or a guarantee that every resolution and frame rate is available for capture.

Option 2: Capture PS Remote Play or the Xbox app
- Set up the relevant console-streaming app on the computer and connect it to your console.
- Open OBS and add a Window Capture source for the PS Remote Play or Xbox app window.
- Check the image and sound in OBS, then make a short test recording. If the picture stutters or loses quality, check the network connection between the console and computer.
OBS notes that this window-capture route needs a faster connection between console and computer to maintain optimal quality. It avoids a capture device, but its results depend on the network and the app stream rather than a direct console-to-capture-device connection.

A capture card’s headline passthrough specification is not necessarily the resolution and frame rate it can record. Compare the exact model’s capture modes and passthrough modes separately, and confirm the details that matter for your setup:

- Console compatibility: confirm the device supports the specific console and video signal.
- Capture resolution and frame rate: check the modes available for recording, not only the maximum signal it can pass through to a display.
- HDR: verify whether HDR capture works at the resolution and frame rate you intend to use; some combinations may not be supported.
- Play-through needs: check passthrough support if you need to play on a separate monitor or TV while recording.
- Computer requirements: confirm the connection type and operating-system compatibility for the exact model.
- Audio and display features: check audio input and any relevant HDR or VRR requirements rather than assuming they follow from a device’s maximum video specification.
- Console form factor: a Switch-family system must be docked for the documented capture-card workflow; Switch Lite cannot use it.
Elgato’s Game Capture 4K X product page separates capture modes from passthrough performance and notes HDR limitations for some resolution and frame-rate combinations. OBS shows a black screen or no console picture
- Confirm the console is outputting video and the capture device is connected and selected as the Video Capture Source.
- Check that the device supports the console’s current video mode. Try a mode listed for capture by the exact device rather than relying on its passthrough maximum.
- If using an app window, confirm the console stream is visible in PS Remote Play or the Xbox app and that OBS is capturing the correct window.
The app-window recording is choppy or soft
The console-to-computer network may not be fast or stable enough to maintain the app stream’s quality. Improve that connection and test again. If the network remains the limiting factor, a compatible capture device provides a different route into OBS.

The recording has no sound, or the wrong audio
Check the audio inputs selected in OBS and the audio-routing setup for the capture device or console app. On PS5, review Capture Options to make sure the desired microphone or voice-chat audio is included. Ask voice-chat participants before recording their voices.

The Switch capture setup does not work
Confirm that a Switch-family console is docked and connected through a compatible capture device. Switch Lite cannot be docked and is not compatible with this capture-card method.
A scene or screen is missing from a PS5 capture
Some PS5 scenes are blocked from capture. If the Create menu’s recording controls work but a particular scene is unavailable in the recording, that may be a console capture restriction rather than an OBS setting.
