Turn the switch on to make notifications blink, choose where the blinking happens, and turn the switch off to stop it entirely. The same screen also holds two separate controls for LED flashing when the iPhone is unlocked and when it is in Silent mode.
Turn Flash for Alerts on or off
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap Accessibility, then tap Audio & Visual, then tap Flash for Alerts.
- To turn the feature on, switch on Flash for Alerts. To turn it off, switch it off. Turning it off stops all visual flashes for notifications, whichever output you had selected.
If you do not see these labels, your iOS version is probably not iOS 26. The steps above follow Apple’s iPhone User Guide for iOS 26, and older releases may place or name the controls differently.

Choose where the flash appears
Once Flash for Alerts is on, select one of three outputs:

Apple describes the LED as the light-emitting diode on the back of iPhone next to the camera lens. Apple’s guide does not list separate timing or brightness settings for each output, so choose the output based on where you are most likely to look.

Control LED flashing when unlocked or in Silent mode
The iOS 26 settings page includes two toggles that control the LED specifically:
- Flash While Unlocked: when on, the LED can flash while the iPhone is unlocked. Turn it off if you only want the light to flash when the phone is locked.
- Flash in Silent Mode: when on, the LED flashes while the ringer is switched to Silent. Turn it off if you want notifications to stay quiet and dark when the ringer is muted.
These toggles affect only the LED. Apple’s guide does not state whether they change how the screen flashes, so assume the screen output follows the Flash for Alerts selection alone.

Why Apple’s documentation seems to disagree about locked use
Apple’s separate support article on LED alerts describes LED Flash for Alerts as working only when the iPhone is locked. The iOS 26 user guide instead documents a Flash While Unlocked option. The two descriptions cover different scopes, and the iOS 26 user guide is the more current reference for the options listed above. If your settings page shows only the locked-only behavior, or does not show the unlocked toggle at all, check your iOS version in Settings > General > About and update it under Settings > General > Software Update.

If the flash does not appear
- Confirm that Flash for Alerts is switched on and that the output you want is selected.
- If you use LED Flash only while locked, lock the phone and send a test notification. Apple’s support article describes the locked-only behavior, so an unlocked test may show no LED flash.
- If you use Silent mode, check whether Flash in Silent Mode is switched on.
- If you expect the LED to flash in Silent mode but it does not, confirm the ringer switch is actually set to Silent, not Vibrate-only with the ringer on.
This procedure does not need an accessory, a replacement part, or a separate app. Everything is built into iOS.
