A small seller can build a dependable product photo setup with a camera they already own, a table, a window, and a white sweep. Tripods, reflectors, diffusion material, and dedicated lights add control, but they improve a working baseline rather than replace one. The steps below start with that baseline and then explain when each upgrade earns its place.
Start with what you already have
Shopify’s product photography guidance states that a smartphone can produce useful product images, and that lighting, setup, and post-processing matter more than the specific device. Amazon Sell’s guidance on taking product photos makes the same point about smartphone technique. For a starter setup you need:

- A camera. Any smartphone with a rear camera or a basic digital camera is enough to begin, provided you can lock its position and control focus and exposure.
- A table near a window. Shopify gives 24 to 27 inches as a standard table width in its guide. Treat that as its suggestion for a workable size, not a rule.
- A white backdrop. Poster board, mat board, or roll paper will do.
- A white foam board or paper card to bounce light back into shadows. It can also serve as a reflector.
- Optionally, a tripod or stable stand. A smartphone tripod is the most common low-cost addition for steadier shots.
Specialist kits are not required. Shopify’s guide notes that inexpensive household materials can cover the basics, and the sources reviewed do not establish a particular camera or light kit as essential.

Set up the shooting area
Work through these steps in order. Each one builds on the previous one, and you should check the result on your screen before moving to the next.

- Choose a room with a window. Shopify notes that indoor bulbs and built-in flash can produce harsh contrast, reflections, or color shifts. Daylight from a window is the more forgiving starting point. If you must shoot at night, you will need artificial lights, and the color balance will need more attention.
- Place the table near the window. Keep the product on the table where the window light reaches it from one side.
- Build a seamless sweep. Tape the white board or paper so it curves from the flat tabletop up behind the product. This removes the hard horizon line between table and wall. Leave enough room behind the product for a reflector card. A roll of paper is more convenient for frequent shooting, because a soiled section can be cut away and fresh paper rolled down.
- Move the setup to adjust the light. According to Shopify’s guide, moving the setup closer to the window produces softer light with darker, softer shadows. Moving it farther away gives more even light with sharper, lighter shadows. Test both positions with the same product before choosing one.
- Diffuse strong direct light. If direct sun hits the product too hard, soften it with a sheet of diffusion material between the window and the product. Shopify’s guide describes diffusing intense light as a standard control.
- Bounce light into shadows. Place a white foam board or paper card on the side of the product opposite the window. This returns some light into the shadow side without adding a new light source.
- Fix the camera and turn off flash. Mount the camera on a tripod or a stable stand. Use the rear camera on a smartphone, tap to focus and set exposure where your phone allows, and turn off flash. Keep the camera and tripod in the same position for the whole batch.
Know when to add lighting and support gear
The window setup is the baseline. Add equipment when a specific problem keeps recurring. The table below matches each option to the problem it solves. Amazon Sell’s guidance covers natural light, diffusion, artificial lights, and white bounce cards as separate options, and the sources reviewed do not establish a single best arrangement for every product.

When you compare these options, weigh five factors: startup cost, control over the light, consistency across a catalog, available workspace, and how reflective or large the product is. The sources reviewed do not publish price comparisons, head-to-head results, or a universal performance winner, so the decision depends on your own product and space. Shiny or highly reflective items usually need more control over reflections than matte goods do.

Shoot a useful image set
Start with one clear overall view of the product on the sweep, then add the views a buyer would look for. Shopify’s guide on ecommerce photography covers backgrounds and multiple angles as part of a broader approach. A practical set usually includes:

- One or more angles that show depth, sides, or the back.
- Close-ups of features, materials, closures, or labels that buyers ask about.
- Scale or in-use views where size is hard to judge from a plain background.
Shopify’s guidance also recommends turning off flash and focusing carefully on each shot. Check focus at full size on your screen before you move the product, because a soft image is hard to fix later.

Amazon US image requirements
The rules below apply to the Amazon US store. Other Amazon marketplaces, and other sales channels, may set different requirements. Check the live documentation for your country and product category before you export a batch.
Main image
Amazon Seller Central’s guidance for adding product images and video states: “The main image must show only the product on a white background, and the product should fill the image frame.” This is a marketplace requirement for the main image. It does not mean every image on every storefront must have a white background.

Secondary images
Amazon recommends additional images that show the product in use, in its environment, from other angles, and with its features visible. The same guidance recommends six images and one video. Treat that as Amazon’s recommendation rather than a rule for every listing. The images must accurately show what the buyer receives.
How much of the frame the product should fill
Amazon’s Images in Lighting help page states that the product should occupy at least 80 percent of the image area, and that only items included in the shipment should appear. Amazon’s product image guide has been cited with a different occupancy figure for some categories, so check the guide that matches your category before you rely on a single number. Apply the rule per listing, not per store.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
- Harsh shadows or blown highlights. Move the table farther from the window, or diffuse the light. Shopify describes distance as the main control for shadow softness.
- Shadow side too dark. Place a white foam board or paper card opposite the window to bounce light back into the shadow.
- A visible horizon line behind the product. Re-tape the sweep so the paper curves from the table into the wall, with no crease at the join.
- Color shifts or a yellow or blue cast. Turn off indoor bulbs and built-in flash, and shoot in window light where possible.
- Framing differs between shots. Lock the tripod position and do not move the camera between products in the same batch.
- Dust or wrinkles on the background. Replace or cut away the affected section of the sweep, especially if you use roll paper.
If a problem persists after you adjust the light, check the reflector position and the camera’s focus before you change equipment.
