Turn design feedback into a task by identifying where the concern occurs, what user goal or design objective it affects, and what the team should do next. Then decide whether the comment is ready for action, needs a decision, or needs clarification. This keeps a critique from becoming a list of subjective preferences or unapproved redesign requests.
Start with a shared design objective
Before collecting comments, state what the design is meant to help someone do, for which user or scenario, and what kind of feedback the team needs. A critique is most useful when people assess whether the design meets those objectives, rather than vote on whether they personally like it. Nielsen Norman Group recommends setting scope and shared objectives for design critiques: Design Critiques: Encourage a Positive Culture to Improve Products.

For example, ask reviewers to assess whether first-time customers can find the payment action on an account overview. That gives them a goal to evaluate; “Tell us what you think of this screen” does not.
Turn each comment into a task candidate
Preserve the concern behind the comment, but make its location, impact, and next step explicit. Avoid treating a preference as proof that a particular change is necessary. Guidance on design feedback emphasizes stating what to revise, how, and why; actionable findings also identify the relevant area, flow, or interaction (Atlassian’s guide to team design feedback; Nielsen Norman Group on making usability findings actionable).

A practical task-writing template
- Location: Which screen, component, content, flow, or interaction is involved?
- Observation: What does the reviewer notice, or what concern did they raise?
- Goal or impact: Which user need, scenario, or design objective might be affected?
- Next step: What should the team inspect, decide, test, or change?
- Reason or evidence: Why is this worth addressing? What evidence supports it, and what remains unknown?
- Disposition: Is it ready to do, does it need persuasion or a decision, or does it need clarification?
- Owner and follow-up: Who will take the next step, and where will the result or decision be recorded?
This is a practical synthesis of recommendations from Nielsen Norman Group and Atlassian, not a validated formula. When the evidence is incomplete, write an investigation or a question—not a definitive implementation instruction.
Example: “The page feels busy”
Task candidate: On the account overview, several secondary panels may compete with the payment action. Check whether users can find that action quickly in the primary account scenario. If they cannot, propose a hierarchy that gives it clearer emphasis.

Not every comment should become a change request. Sort feedback by whether the team can act on it now, needs to make a decision, or lacks enough context to proceed. Nielsen Norman Group describes three useful critique dispositions in Derailed Design Critiques: Tactics for Getting Back on Track.

| Disposition | Readiness to act | What to do | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| To do | Ready for action | Record the agreed work, its owner, and the relevant goal or reason. | “The error message omits the required format. Update it to show an example so users know how to correct the field.” |
| To persuade | A decision or rationale is needed | Explain why the suggestion may conflict with the current objectives, or bring the decision to the appropriate people. | “The suggested promotional banner may compete with the payment action. Decide whether the campaign or payment flow takes priority on this screen.” |
| To clarify | Not ready; context is missing | Ask what scenario, user need, or observed problem the comment refers to before planning a change. | “Which users have trouble with this step, and what are they trying to do when it happens?” |
These are triage categories, not competing design methods. In particular, a suggestion that needs clarification should not be assigned as though its proposed solution were already approved.

Keep critique notes and action items somewhere the team can find and revisit them. For each item, record its disposition, owner, next step, and any open question. When work is complete, connect the update to the feedback that prompted it; when the team does not adopt a suggestion, record the reason. Nielsen Norman Group describes this follow-up practice in Closing the Loop: What to Do After a Design Critique Ends.
