To switch Samsung Keyboard’s predictive text on or off, open Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings, then change Predictive text. Predictive text suggestions, automatic word replacement, spell-check marks, and grammar suggestions are separate controls, so choose the setting that matches what you want your phone to do.

You can also open Samsung Keyboard settings using the keyboard’s Settings icon. On older software, the route may instead appear under Language and input, On-screen keyboard, or Smart typing. Samsung notes that its steps describe the latest Samsung operating system and that screens can vary by country. Its Canada guide applies specifically to the default Samsung Keyboard: Samsung Canada’s predictive text and auto-correction guide. Samsung UK phrases the task as “How do I activate or deactivate predictive text?” in its predictive text support article.

Predictive text and auto-correction are related, but they do not do the same thing. If the phone offers suggestions you do not want inserted automatically, adjust Auto replace rather than turning off every suggestion.

Save a word for future suggestions
Type the word and tap Space. Samsung UK says the word is then saved for later suggestions.

Remove one learned word
When the word appears in the suggestion bar, press and hold it, then confirm its removal.

Open Samsung Keyboard settings > Reset to default settings > Erase personalised predictions. Depending on the software version, the option may be called Clear personalised data. This clears learned personalization in bulk; use it when unwanted learned behavior is the problem, not simply to switch prediction on or off. Use a shortcut for a phrase you type often

Open Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings.

Tap More typing options > Text shortcuts.

Add a shortcut and the expanded phrase you want it to represent.

When you type the shortcut, the expanded phrase appears in the suggestion bar. This documented workflow is available in Samsung’s UK predictive text guidance.
Check the keyboard and language if suggestions are wrong or missing

Confirm the active keyboard. Samsung Keyboard settings will not control Gboard or another third-party keyboard. Samsung’s Canada instructions are scoped to Samsung Keyboard.

Check the input language. Make sure the intended language is enabled, along with Predictive text and whichever correction control you need.

Switch languages from the keyboard if needed. Samsung tablet guidance says languages can be added under Manage input languages. On the documented tablet interface, users can switch by swiping across the spacebar or holding the language icon; controls differ by device. See Samsung’s tablet keyboard guidance.

Look for alternate menu labels. Older software may place keyboard options under Language and input, On-screen keyboard, or Smart typing.

Predictive text is not the same as Writing assist or Chat assist
Samsung’s Writing assist, called Chat assist on some devices, is a separate AI feature—not another name for Smart typing. Samsung’s US support page lists availability on selected phones and tablets running Android 14 and One UI 6.1 or later, subject to device compatibility. Listed functions include AI spelling and grammar assistance, writing styles, Composer, and chat translation. The page lists support for 16 languages across 23 locales; availability and supported languages may change, so check Samsung’s current guidance and your device’s settings if the feature is absent: Samsung US Writing assist and Chat assist information.
